Staredit Network -> Concepts -> RPG + RTS Brainstorming
Report, edit, etc...Posted by PCFredZ on 2005-09-10 at 18:22:38
Merchants RPG, one that's very popular on B.net, features two playable forces: the Heroes and the Merchants (or the Towns). Each needs to play a unique role in helping the other flourish, and cooperation is obviously a key element.

As those who played it can recall, the Merchants had a lot of freedom in what they could do: charge for units, charge for inns, etc.; however, they were still very limited in that they were physically stuck on the right side of the map, and exploring/expanding would have to be left for the Heroes to do.

World of Starcraft 2, made by me, is unfortunately the only map I can think of which offers the option for the player filling in the Town slot to construct additional buildings which the Heroes can still access, and thus expand the area and dynamically create service buildings such as inns and upgrades to accomodate newly arising needs from the Heroes. The obvious problem with WoS2 is that it's protected, and I no longer have an unprotected version; but the implementation did receive great feedback from those who tried it, especially on B.net with me, and thus having experienced the thrill of "OMG I CAN GO IN THIS NEW BUILDING". In addition, the Town player can now participate in fighting as well, instead of watching the action performed by the Heroes, thus merging an RPG with an RTS.

Where can this be effectively used? An example is my decision for my next map, an SC port of Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim.
QUOTE(Majesty Website)
Majesty is a unique kind of god sim. Instead of playing a god manipulating the lives of your followers, you are the sovereign of a kingdom in the mythical land of Ardania. You, as sovereign, dictate the layout of your kingdom, managing how and where you erect special structures. From these structures you recruit adventurers who have their own unique behavior. They are, at no time, under your direct control, but they are under your influence. You have to determine what personality these characters have and discover what inspires them to complete your quests.

However, instead of recruiting computer-controlled adventurers, there will be other human players to control those heroes.

Trigger overview:
  • Constantly center locations on Heroes, unless if Hero is in building
  • Detect if Town brings building to Heroes' moving location, instead of the usual detecting if Hero brings men to a stationary location where the Town's building is located.
  • Since the center location triggers cease when the Hero enters a building, that same location can be used to keep track of where to send the Hero back when he leaves the building.

Of course, this is still a concept. I hope that by spreading RPG/RTS maps, they will become more common on B.net, whether made by me or another, and eventually become not just a concept, but a concrete genre.

Ooo, majesty. I think I still own that, and what an ok game it was tongue.gif

Hopefully you can add some new gameplay features for it. And who are you going to do bounty, or are you going to do it at all?

The triggers aren't new, but the idea is to spread them. I tried last year and am trying again this year, but people just don't seem that interested.

Dividing bounty money will suck, so I'll just give the Majesty player the ability to transfer gold to the Heroes, and probably vice versa.

Are you talking about the idea itself or the bounty-dividing thing Temp and I were talking about?

Try to think of a creative way to do bounty tongue.gif It would be awsome if you could pull it off. Also if you need any help with ideas or testing id really like to help.
