anyways, i am a normal reader in the maps in production, and i realized so many RPG's that are being made, anyways, here is what i noticed, about 70% of them don't even get completed, or even started, so why the hell post it!!! anyways that was an observation

agreed

There's a lot of reasons, I'm guessing the most common is that the author promises too much and then doesn't want to have to go and make a flawless version of it all.

Well, I can assure mine will be finished!

I work on mine for at least 2-3 hours a day. The only bad thing is... My map is going to be a very big project for me. I've been working on it for... 3-4 Months and it is probably only like 5-6% complete.

The reason why RPGs get cancelled is because they're big projects and people tend to get bored with them easily.

Which is why said that he doesn't like people starting rpg projects if they can't even finish it. Everyone these days are obsessed with making their maps MASSIVE and they just can't live without the max map size. Heres a hint, Sequels.

A game design book I read had great advice on this subject: "I'd rather see a 100% completed Pong variant, than a 10% completed unfinished 3D shooter with amazing graphics."

Or something like that. Completed small projects > Unfinshed large projects.

The story and the writing are the fun parts. The tedious, repetitive grunt work of making all the item/spell/heal/level up systems is what I think kills the interest of most people who try to make a starcraft RPG. Also, the endless testing and playing of your own disfunctional buggy map is discouraging sometimes. Luckily I have a lot of patience LOL

I think finding the systems for the triggers and thinking of unique items/spells/etc is the fun part, but what gets me out of it is the endless hours of triggering.

Well, that applied to me more. I ran the risk of quitting when I had to do all the repetitive triggering stuff. My favorite parts are the story, characters and boss fights.

I think nowadays the only good RPGs are the classic ones. Padoroths return and The uprising, from back in 1999 were my favorites. I think I still have them. I also like the earth defend or something rpg. Keep em' classic biggrin.gif

i think that most Rpg's are suppposed to be made with big maps, and endless triggers, and if you dont have the time to put into it then why start? alough there are some that are made on smaller maps and are very primitive in the trigger area, but are very fun, so i gusse it just depends on the amout of time needed and the amount of time the map-maker has.

I'll finish mine, cuz I actually like map making. I love the idea of creating my own story, cuz comic books would be my only alternative. I love creating, and map making never gets boring. It's just like a big adventure. Only the strong survive. The weak quit.

Almost everyone makes maps to show off. Simple as that. Almost all the kids that show off their maps in map productions, don't finish their maps cause they've already showed them off.

My advice to you, if you're one of those kids, don't show off your map until it's almost done. I've been talking like this for years, and almost no one ever listens. So I'll say it once more:

DON'T SHOW OFF YOUR MAP UNTIL IT'S ALMOST :censored:ING DONE

Nah, I like creating things. I've already finished an RPG, even if it sucked, cuz I wanted to finish wut I started... What kind of loser starts an RPG just to show off?

Problem with WoS1 is I had a bad start and it'd be easier to rebuild it from scratch than fixing. In fact, that's what I did: WoS3!
Problem with WoS2 is that it's protected and I don't have an unprotected version.
Problem with WoS3 is that I've hit location number limit, and the combined triggers of 3 different races lags the game down way too much. However, I haven't given up on this one yet.

I have the same problem sad.gif
Get bored easily, but i didnt give up on it yet, though...

Well part of it might be when many of the authors have this gandoise idea of a map they will make, and how it will revolutionize mapping with all these new things. When nobody replies to their topic / they find that things take work / they move on to a better map / they figure its better to simply yell at other people making maps, they end production.

Eh.. I remember my first and second shot at making an RPG... my first shot went okay for a first-timer...I got some decent triggers done, but it was plotless, had no set goal, and was really just a way for me to develop some skills. My second try...I aimed to high.. heh. I'm kinda ashamed of my younger days now. But, eh, you live you learn.

The reasons I never actually got more than 4 or 5% work done on my huge ass map was because:

A) I have a life

B) I uber procrastinate

C) Not as dedicated to it as other people, because I hadn't really done it much

D) I've got school, and hardly any time to spare.

If I were not atleast 2 of those things, I may have possibly finished it... but eh, looks like I wasn't the man for the job. Still, I haven't given up on map-making and rpg maps though...

Here's my advice to ya:

Make a huge ass map, but start extremely small. Why? Because when you finish with your miniscule, but totally complete RPG, you leave room for improvement. Lots of it. So it's done, basically. It just gets better as you find ways of improving it. I mean, first you'll go..

"Oh, sweet, I'm done. W00t, that was easy."

Then, you'll go...

"Oh, hey, I could make this better..."

Then...

"I could make that better too..."

And then...

"Damn, I could make all of those things better..."

...

and then eventually, you might think...

"Omfg... this rpg..SUCKS. I could make the whole damn thing twice as better!" And soon, you start to learn the art of RPG-making. But don't look to me for that knowledge, I'm still learning. =P
