Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> My Issues With The School System...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Demaris on 2005-09-13 at 18:17:21

Ok I just got back from school a little while ago and want to tell you how pissed i am at the school system. and why, of course.
It all started like this:

The first day of school I had Geometry (supposedly the advanced class). I went in and the teacher started teaching the pythagorean theorem. TEACHING!!! I AM IN 9TH GRADE I HAVE KNOWN THIS blam FOR 3 YEARS!!!!! That night i look through my math book and find that i know it all. Yes, everything that the book covers. So i go and ask my counseler and teacher if i can test out. Naturally they don't take me seriously, so i have to get my mother to call the censored.gif ing school to get the ball rolling. So i took the test yesterday. And, of course, NOTHING from the test was even MENTIONED in the book. Apparently i didn't do well enough to test out as I found out today. So i get to bang my head on the desk in the hope i will learn something. Also, i talked to one of my former teachers and he told me that the high school i am attending DOESN'T even have an advanced math program. All they do is move you up a grade in terms of math. So, i get stuck in a supposedly "advanced" class full of idiot sophomores. I can't believe the blam they are trying to pull. I could learn more on my own. Tomorrow, I am going to refuse to go back to that bullblam geometry class. I am going to the counseler (oooh, like they actually help? their purpose is to placate you, not help you) and saying "Either move me to a faster class or let me teach myself". I guess the school doesn't understand a basic rule: MORE HOMEWORK DOES NOT EQUAL MORE LEARNING!!!!!!!!!!!! Why don't schools accomadate to the upper level as well? I mean, the bottom 5% certainly gets extra help. Why doesn't the top 5%? I have ADHD so if i am even mildly bored my attention is absolutely elsewhere.

If i get stuck in this crap class i will keep track of how slow it goes or if i get to learn at a faster rate then i will record it here as well:

Only the second week of school, and i'm already pissed.

I'm going to attempt to change this into a why the school system should reform type of thread. But first:

Geometry, advanced? (lol) If you think you know geometry, can you prove to me why the SAS works but not SSA? That's easy. How about a more complex one. (Taken from one of my math books) Prove there is at least one solution for f(x)=e^x and f(x)=x. Now remember, these are proofs, not just doing them.

If you can do both of them, I must say, you are way further than most of your peers.

Now, for the actual system, what I don't like is how people learn. There are two types of people, those who want to learn and those who don't. I think those who don't want to learn should be immediatly given the choice of quitting school. That way, the school will allow those who want to learn to learn at a much quicker pace.

A loop should also be developed around this; allow those who are in higher levels to teach those in lower levels. The best way to learn is to teach the material. They would be helping themselves and others.

Well most of the time if you want to learn and you understand the material you can take an honors or advanced course. Like everyone there is willing to learn and probably won't drag you down.

Are you in a regular geometry class or does your school offer something more fast paced? Nvm, that sucks not having an advanced class.

As for the what you are learning in class, give it time. Most of the time they take a week or two to go over like basic algebra because you should know it. Also it isn't a big surprise if there are some things you learn aren't in the textbook. That's what teachers are for. The teacher might use some other resources to teach from.

Also you should actually ask the teacher what you will learn this year.

I know right now I'm taking honors geometry and we've been going over radicals as a review before we start. We're moving pretty quickly through that though.

Yeah, those functions are a bit beyond me. and thats trig btw. this is just standard geometry. which is supposed to be advanced. Now THAT i don't get.

Your probly just reviewing it to get refresh the minds of the idiots... This reminds me i have Algebra 2 next semester sad.gif i already took honors geometry and honors algebra feshman year sad.gif

Geometry is not an advanced class. Honors Geometry is. Here's a hard geom. question:

[attachmentid=13874]

GIVEN:
-The figure consists of a parital circle and semicircle (of equal radius) extended by two line segments
-The width of the figure at its widest point is the same as the diameter of the circle, 110m.
-The width of the partial circle is 22 m less than the diameter of the circle

Find the area of the shaded region.

Actually, that was fairly early in the year happy.gif

I have this same problem, people in my geography class don't understand the laws of GRAVITY and I constantly correct my teacher on things such as, "Pangaea broke up about 60,000 years ago" I think everyone knows that's off about 1,940,000 years.

I've had classes like that :/

I remember a class like that i had in 7th grade it was quite funny

No, it's not review. A lot of the kids don't get it.

Whats with everyone and stupid people in their classes, I never have any in mine! =/

And by the way, wise-cracking "ECKSEPT U!!!!1 HHAAAAHAAA," is lame.

It's not trig. It doesn't matter whether or not the 'e' is there. Besides, 'e' should have been learned in Algebra; anyway, you could simply replace it with in any other constant, like pi.

DtKr:

the answer is too simple. pi*(55^2)/2+22*110-pi*(55^2)/2... eh, yeah. I don't want to reduce. =P

*gasp* Now do my problem tongue.gif

I know the feeling. Apparently you need Algebra II to get into Honors Geometry, but not Academic. Same with Physics.

At my high school, there is no level of Algebra I (Which I took last year) above Academic. So I'm stuck with a bunch of blamheads learning what I could in one day, in one or more week(s). We get loaded with a bunch of busy work to 'set in our minds', but all it does is piss me off. I'm just glad I'm out of that class (Smartest in that class, I might add) and now in Honors Alg II. I'm the only Tenth grader in it this year though, the rest are ninth. We have to write the notes, which I have no need for, and it only distracts me from listening. sad.gif I'm one who learns from lectures, non personal lectures.

In my school you need Geometry before Algebra II, I think.

My friends tell me that Algebra II and Geometry aren't even related, well as in it doesn't matter which you take first, however to take like pre-calc which is trigonometry I think you need to have had Algebra II the year before, not two years before or something.

Yeah, It's claustraphobia for the mind.

Another thing to list in the great list of retarded things that happen at school:

My gym class ran out of uniforms. Me and about 6 other people didn't get one. So today we thought we would get them but we didn't. Then we all had to write a one page paper for not dressing out. PRETTY.... censored.gif ING.....RETARDED!!!!

Wow. I'm glad my school isn't like that. I think my school is a great school. I mean we aren't rich like other counties, but we have good teachers and opportunities and stuff.

One thing I've noticed though is that my classes are pretty close to the 25 person per class limit. I guess it's because that my freshman class is pretty big though.

While you are complaining about school their are people down south with out homes, running water, food, and more. All things you take forgranted
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MapUnprotector on 2005-09-14 at 17:13:02
Not to mention people who aren't even able to go to a school like those in other poor countries.

heh, my 1st algebra this year was nothing like revising. All new material. Alot of it.

Oh and how they think homework = learning...
