Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> The meaning of life
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Stryke on 2005-09-26 at 10:51:20
why do you think we exist???

(as a precaution please read all of the statments below before posting

1-please do not state your opinion as fact or involve religons as a fact or say certain religons are "wrong" because noone will know until its over
for example do not say "crist died for our sin so cristianity must be right therefore we are here to serve god" that statement is very opinionated and people will i repeat will find it offensive. if you wish to say that statement as above it would be "in my opinion we are here to serve someone" notice i didnt involve religon or fact in that statement yet ultimatly people will probably put 2 and 2 together and figure out what i'm trying to say

2-please be professional about this if you think we are here to "HAVE SEX" dont put "WE ARE HERE TO HAVE SEX" in big bold letters instead use "we are here to pursue procreation".

3-no flaming religons it states above do not do this but i will stress this, as for that reason this is usually a touchy subject

4-do not go rambling on about random tangents that have to do with life (such as your dog fluffy died).

if you cannot comply with the rules as above this subject will most likely be closed after a few posts for it will most likely offend someone if you do not and this topic will probably be closed almost instantaniosly and if you wish to argue with someone about religon PM them because noone here will want to hear it...........happy posting) happy.gif

Truly I really wish I knew why we are here...maybe its because were going to do something? I don't know maybe no one knows...I do wonder sometimes about life and why we are here and living and everything. I don't know if there is such thing as "god" who created us but I do believe in god but sometimes I don't because of whats happening with war, terrorism, and all these kinds of people dying but hey thats just my opinion, but all I can say is im not sure why we are here...

We certainly aren't here to sit around contemplating why we're here all day.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Dr.Shotgun on 2005-09-26 at 16:27:00
I think we're here for no reason. Does everything need a reason to exist? The question "Why are we here?" is just a product of a human's pattern and dedution seeking mind. It follows a chain of logic, we are here, it must have a reason, but it doesnt. A rock does not need a reason to exist. There is very little that separates our existance from a rocks, cosmically. Why does our existence need a reason? First we must answer this question, before we propose or ask what that reason is.

The meaning to life is what ever you want it to be. Simple as that.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Quabarrick on 2005-09-26 at 22:21:52
the meaning of life is .... well maybe its not a general meaning but more of an individual thing as in for each person has a reason for why they are here and will never realize what that is but live anyway in a never ending quest to figure it out

Not exactly answering the question of why are we here but on the same topic.

I am an atheist but yet I believe in an afterlife. How is this possible? The afterlife I believe in not some reincarnation as a butterfly or some heavenly bliss, it's not even a afterlife where you are concious and self-aware.. I believe we are lived on by the works of thought which we give to the world and the things we accomplish while here. I view the great people in this world who have dared explored and create new things.. for their names and theories will live on in history and science books for hundreds of years to come.

People who created vast amounts of wealth for themselves during this lifetime are forgotten .. while those who have helped improve how we think about ourselves, our surroundings and technology will live on forever.

Umm first of all, does s][ndicate have my name on his sig or is it some kind of random name o izer script..

Second of all, in my opinion life has no meaning except to have meaning.
Life is there so there would be something.
This might seem strange, but that is my opinion..
No life, no existence, or none that counts anyway.
Life is there for something to be there.

Just to get people confused (and this occured to me right now).. how would it be like if there was nothing?

Okay, on topic: Humans will never know the meaning of life, we're too stupid. We claim to be the most intelligent animals on this planet, yet we seem to know nothing about it. Animals get it; eat, sleep, reproduce. That's it. We try to put all these large meanings to life, but it's simple as 'eat, sleep, reproduce.' censored.gif HUMANITY!

If atheism is true, life has no purpose. Life is nothing special.

If there was nothing after death, you could not feel nor even think. I know that seems impossible, but you simply would not exist. Scary thought, eh?

I think that something happens after you die, if its Heaven, Hell, reincarnation, etc.
Just my opinion because of the lack of any dispersion of energy at the point of death, and the fact there is more energy in your body at any given moment than your entire neighborhood's eletrical, chemical, heat, etc. equipment.

Yes it's scary, thats why people believe in religious blam... they are too high on themselves and their existance that it is literally impossible to humble themselves to the reality that they could possibly cease to exist. When you humble yourself to accept the fact that your existance here may only be the interaction of the chemicals in your head, I believe you my friend have been enlightened.

More energy in your body than your neighbourhood's electrical, chemical, heat ...don't make me post a link to Kellimus's threads where he just spews his own imaginary facts and gets angry when you question where he got his lies from.

If your body had more energy than your neighborhood's electrical facilities it would be true if you touch the electrical leads in your nearest power outlet that you would infact fry the wires and the wires wouldn't fry you. I encourage you to try this now, please come back after and post your results.. Hurray!

Stop :censored:ing flaming religion and the religious people. Stryke clearly said in his first post not to do that:

This very subject is deeply woven in religious and non-religious beliefs.. If you think you can have a conversation about the meaning of life without steping on anyones toes.. Try again.

However I will say sorry that I responded to this topic .. it was that whole scary thought when you die thing.. I see so many people hung up over this very fact. In my experience, 9/10 times people take the religion over humble self-realization in this universe. It is sad, that is the only thing I have to say.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MillenniumArmy on 2005-09-29 at 20:30:47
If you're going to get religion involved, don't be so offensive in what you say. You were saying that religious people "are too high on themselves and their existance."

When it comes down to it, the meaning of life is to survive and have babies. That's why we have a such a drive to not die, to protect ourselves. That's also why we have sex drives.

got some good points in the first point, but the second paragraph has some flaws, let us not forget that manu gret discoverys/ inventions were found becuase of the funding of very whealthy people.

yet it always seems to be the none religiose folk who inssist that everything that ever was (like matter) still is. so if a person existed, wouldnt it be illogical along these terms to consider them to stop existing, then again if they just stop existing i suppose that we can assume that they didnt exist in the first place... so if u stop existing when u die fine by me becuase then i can conclude that u never existed in the first place so i dont have to worry about responding to anyhitng you've ever said/ ever will say.

obviosly the above statement of your not exissting in absurd, but i would like to insist if thigns cant be created then they cant be destroyed. therefore if a person exist in some form they will always continue to exist in one form or another.
