I Was Thinking Of A Grid System Tht Could Be Used As A Compass Pointing In The General Direction Of The Target.
Example: Make a mobile grid system that every time a unit moves, change coordinates via. gas/minerals. Based on the gas minerals you have (Your coordinates) the on screen arrow points to where you need to go.
EX.:____/\____\/____<____>
Any ideas/comments?
Leggy, what ever happened to
"We have tutorials for everything!".
Thats perfect, but what im saying is based on your coordinates and the coordinates of the objective object, there is an on screen compass, like in an rpg you could buy a compass. it would be sweet!
Oh! hmm... Thats really hard to achieve if your thinking about using it on a large scale map.
And with multiple players. IT would take like 80 triggers per person. And the locations would probably max.
Well wait.. I just thought of it.
You take a unit and position it at where your hero is and order it to move to where the destination is, then you figure out which direction it went, and make the compass from that.
You would probably want a fast moving cloaked air unit, so a wraith would probably work.
have an area on the side where all the interiors and selection places are and make the surface look like a circle, then have 4 units(doesnt matter which units) named north, west, south, and east, let them be on the top, left, bottom, and right respectively, then have a pointer that always points to the top(can be terrain pointer) and move the units to each other's place resembling a compass (kind of confusing)
......................_____
..................../....N....\
...................|W..^...E|
....................\__S.__/
(compass in use)
......................_____
..................../....E....\
...................|N...^...S|
....................\__W.__/
also, use a grid system to identify which way your character is facing so that you can move the directions around (the unit named "North" should always be the direction your character is facing)
Why would North always be the direction your character is facing? That makes no sense. North is always a certain direction. If you turn around, North is still the same direction.
please read my post carefully, it says the unit named "North" will always be facing in the same direction that your character is facing, but it doesnt mean that that is north beacause the arrow indicates the direction of north
anyway's you can make it so that the arrow moves and the north, south, east, and west stay still (this is good for pointing in the direction of a unit that you want to find)
I think o-0 is trying to make a "third-player perspective" mood with his compass. You know, as if you were behind the player. Everywhere the unit is going would be facing "north", but is actually facing "east".
Although it's a nice idea, I don't think it will get much applaud due to that our Starcraft perspective is more over the units than behind them.

I think Wheats right, it'd be hard and probably max out locations and all, but if you want to atempt, go ahead.
o-0, I actually did a version of your idea a while back. I had it detect which way a tank was going and it calculated a grid system to change direction. Then I had it so units could enter the tank (they were teleported to a box elseware in the map) and using a neato system I was able to mimic the units around the tank to units around the box. So basically I created a way to make people shoot from inside a tank. The only problem with the idea was when you turned, some of the enemies in the box area got all screwed up as your locations were moved around.
A great map idea lol. Its called ultimate maze. It has 4 preplaced 36x36 2x2 mazes and an option to create a maze(Host creates). If the create a maze is done then the players must go through 5 random mini-games out of the total 15. The winner would get a headstart. Then the players would get placed at the start of the maze(the middle) and they would be blind Dt's. Then each player would have to use the compass directional that they have personaly to get out. THen theres an option to play again. Awsome map if made.
how about a map with futuristic genius mice that need to get past a maze to get to a resource that they desperately need: cheese
in the maze, there would be all kinds of obstacles, including roaming cats(reavers), and you have to get past all of them to get the cheese with the help of the compass
also, to make the compass useful, the cheese could be moving around the maze but extremely hard to get for a while
