In the Single player campaign missions, the Cerebrate-controlled Zerg forces have the Overmind portrait replaced by a Cerebrate portrait. In some Protoss missions, your buildings have the Fenix portrait instead of the Conclave dude.

Can I chance portraits like this in Staredit, and am I restricted to buildings? Or can I do this with a 3rd party map editor?

You can't in Staredit, you can however in modding programs.

Or if there was a way to detect which unit you were clicking on during a game, you could show the portrait of that unit...

Can you suggest which one would be the best to use?

staredit is usable for every player in the battle net.
modding makes the game different, each player have to download it, and in some cases, they are not online -playable... but... yea if you could detect what unit you were clicking... maybe you should ask a more pro person... tongue.gif might be done with a simple eud trigger.

Ok, I realise that I can use Arsenal III, and am competent with doing so. But I was wondering if there was a way of doing this that didn't stretch beyond editing the .scm or .scx

Maybe there is a 3rd party map editor that can do this?

If it is down to complex triggers as you suggested, it's probably beyond me...

There is no map editor that I know of that can change portraits. DTBK thinks that the value of a unit being selected is stored in memory, but we don't know how to access it with EUDs yet.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll have to stick to good ol' Arsenal III then!
