How do they work?

Isn't it when you bring one of your units near it, the unit goes from no one controlling it to you controlling it? But it stays the same color, even when you gain control. An example is in the campaigns, how when you get a hero it's color is teal.

When you walk near them, they are automatically given to you by SC engine. They retain their original color and are neutral to computers (before being rescued).

what player# would they be, and is it possible to give them triggers?

you change them in the settings part.

Just select the "rescueable" setting under player settings. Choose from human, comp, neutral and "rescuable".

And yes, triggers affect them.
