Either start off with lvl 3 upgrades or hide the Hive somewhere else.

Put terrain around the hive that you can't build on, it stops the creep.

I can remember a topic some time ago, but I can't find it using the search tool, where there was a dispute about whether a hive etc was needed or not to upgrade past level 3.
I think the conclusion was that upgrades past level three don't require any technological buildings - that is, if you start off with level 3 upgrades already, you won't need any hive/lair to continue upgrading higher.

I'm not sure if that was it, but it's worth trying to see if it works.

Addendum:
I tested it. You don't need any buildings (other than your upgrade building) to upgrade to level 4 and above - so to me, that seems like your best solution.

Mini Town D gives you level 7 upgrades or something to begin with anyway, but anything from 3 upwards is enough to eliminate the need for a hive.

Correct. Starcraft wasn't configured to handle over three upgrades, so there are no restriction by technology on upgrades not in the original Starcraft campaigns.
