Staredit Network -> Terrain -> First attempt at terrain

Well, heres my first attempt. It was pretty hard making the stairs look less blocky, but I think it looks pretty good biggrin.gif .

* I was aiming at making three levels coming off the stairs.

pretty nice except you went sprite crazy. dont use so many lol then it'll look good.

i'd give it a 6/10

Yeah that good for a first. And like Toothfariy said, try not to use so many sprites =/
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Arbitrary on 2005-11-01 at 00:08:48
-Too many sprites to be practical
-The temple plateau the stairs lead to has absolutely no continuity
-The stairs don't appear to match the elevation of the temple (at least from that distance)

4/10

Get to work smile.gif

Yea, pretty messy sprite use. But I do like the idea of using Photon Cannons that way.

Considering it was your first try, I will give you a 7/10.
Lay off the spirtes though.
BTW, I did like your stairs, they looked pretty good.

It's nice but too many sprites. 6.5/10

3/10. If you remove every sprites it would look ugly and Blocky. And yeah... Too much.. sprite.

Anyway, nice try for your first "terrain" attempt.

1/10

Concept terrain, sprite intensive.

Very little blending going on here... mostly just tile-smashing.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Toothfariy on 2005-11-01 at 16:00:24
so all those complements were worth 1/10?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Fastzerg on 2005-11-01 at 17:15:16
looks like a bridge or so
its cool
the elevation fault makes it look like a bridge
good for first try
6,5/10

He makes his decision on what he thinks it is. He does not go along with the others. I would personally give it a 3 because of the bad sprite placement, cover-up placements, and the elevation. But it was a pretty neat idea to make.

WoodenFire, i seriously think you should be banned from commenting in the terrain section. You are unbelievable. This is so harsh its not even fair to an ass hole. It's his first time and instead of building him up you give him a 1/10, pretty much saying its worthless. Why? It works. Yes he put too many sprites. And he should have given the screenshot from in game. But you don't have to be so blunt and make him a failure in your book. This is his first try and you a grading with pro criteria. Just...don't bother trying to "help" new terrainers. You don't help you only try to make yourself look even better by giving noobs cruddy ratings. Now for my critique (although im no pro)

4/10
- Take the screenshot in the game. If you don't know where it goes, and pasting in paint makes it all black like it did on mine, then you have to go into the Starcraft folder and retrieve the pcx file number that it was and upload it with that file name. If you want to crop if or something then you need a converter.
- You (and other people) should take your idea of using buildings to cover up blockiness rather than so many sprites. Good idea biggrin.gif
- I also learned this, don't put uneccessary sprites and use as many doodads as you can. But keep in mind that doodads attach the tiles that they belong in so if it doesn't match then you have to use sprites. (I.E. Trees go in jungle, the clearly won't work on temple terrain)

I apologize for flaming against WoodenFire but he needs to be put in his place and stop acting like he's god of terrain. If he wants to sit here and tell me that he just "grades hard" then his grading needs to be limited to intermediate/pro terrainers ONLY. He really tears the noobs down. I would also like to point out that noobs are NOT going for originality 90% of the time. Please do not tell us its "nothing new". WE KNOW. We are copying you guys so that we can LEARN. It is very hard to learn when you make it up yourself. Please keep that in mind when judging.

I didn't say he was worthless, and giving a rating of 1/10 doesn't suggest anything... he wanted a rating? I gave him a rating.

I am just one of many people who rated this person. Stop analysing and flamming me just because I give him a couple reasons.

You are simply hunting me down for accurate terrain grades.

Simply, shut up, mind your own buisness... you can not change my mind, 1/10 is finnal. An improoved version might do better.

I enjoyed looking at this piece, it made me think of the phrase "Tile-Smashing," which I thought was inventive and kinda kool?

You take terrain too seriously, mislead by my posts, and continue to flame.

Perhaps me admitting I have a small ego with terrain would cheer you up. I rate on what I known and how I feel about a piece. I do not care if you give me your sorry butt excuse "It's my first... blah blah blah."

I was a nub once, I didn't post my ideas at all. Never even knew about SEN. I met Rantent, who is my idol for what I consider, "Perfect Blends."

Start being more mature with your posts. You act like your the police-of-SEN to suggest the banning of a member who, if your lucky, explains why he has these views.

All in all, stop your whinning, its, how should I call it... annoying? Yes. You, Veritaserum (Notice I lacked to mention your name above for a mysterious reason...) are annoying.

If you ever post against me because you think I "suggested" or "asumed" that I ment something, let me know before hand. Maybe you are having a rough day?

Happy happy.

Seriously Wooden, I think you were a little harsh on the guy.
Advice: Use sprites as A. decoration when you're done or B. an absolutely last-ditch cover-up tool.
Take ingame screenshots.
Try to vary your sprite usage when you use them, and place in irregular format unless you specifically need a regular pattern.

Use sprites on stair corners and stuff, otherwise flawless 6.5/10 [too many sprites]

Guys, he asked for a rating and that's what WoodenFire gave him. He gave a truthful rating instead of the "omgz hez new here so lets rate him different". But I agree with other people, an in-game screenshot would be nice.

I didn't say rate different. I mean come on...1/10 thats like...horrible. This wasn't a horrible terrain job. It wasn't great and it wasn't that original but it was way better than 1/10.

Im not continually analysing you or flamming you. I did it once, and i did it because you don't give constructive criticism, only criticism not because you gave him reasons.

Terrain grades are simply opinion. There is no such thing as "accurate" grades. And i'm not hunting you down...what a waste of my time.

Why don't you tell him stuff like this ALONG with what he did wrong. THIS is what the noobs need. This was what i am trying to get through your head. THIS is constructive.

Im not taking it seriously. This has nothing to do with terrain dude. It has to do with being a nice person. He and all other first-timers want to know what they did right and what they did wrong. And they don't want to feel like they did a horrible job. Its amazingly discouraging. Maybe you like to be cruelly criticized but 99% of the rest of the human population does not.

You have a huge ego. You need to pop that balloon you call a head. And its not an excuse. It is simply a fact to get you to understand that WE DON'T KNOW WHAT WE ARE DOING.

WoodenFire, you broke the promise you made to yourself... I was talking to him the other day about it, he thinks people should EARN his respect, I see nothing wrong with that, Veritaserum I don't think he's trying to make the guy feel like a piece of shiz, I think he's trying to tell him that it needs work and that he should work harder on the next one. I like it for a first try, 6/10.

ADDITION:
I also don't think the guy necessarily took the screenshot in the editor, that could be a sprite start location and he could've placed a revealer.... I think anyway, correct me if that's wrong.
