Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> [SOLVED] Regarding "16-bit" wav files
Report, edit, etc...Posted by scythetleppo on 2005-11-08 at 15:50:41
Hey I have a sound file I been using and it works ok (except of course that practically everytime I save my map with Starforge I have to redo it...........................but then again I have to redo the player colors too) but everytime I put the file into my map with Xtra, it gives me a message about how if the wav file I had was 16-bit, it could compress it and I would save some filesize. I've tried to decode it in several settings but I'm not a sound expert, and it keeps saying that. I've tried setting it to 16-bit on my decoder but that does nothing.

Anyone know the channels, bitrate and mono/stero that works to get compressed?

If I am correct there is a wav compressor on this site somewhere that will make wav files into 16 bits (just the kind you need.)

Coincidentally, that's usually what happens when you lower the quality of any sounds.

Use Audacity! You can make your wavs 16-bit without losing any quality. And 16-bit sounds take less space in maps. Except if you use SF, them your map size will grow 3 times.

Will compressed 16 bit files have less size than uncompressed 8 bit files? Or would it vary depending on the circumstance?

Yes 16-bit will be less and in better quality. When you change it to 16-bit it is way bigger that 8-bit but in map it's compressed about 8-10 times smaller. 8-bit are basically for those who are to lazy to change them wink.gif
