Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Marijuana Legalized

Denver has legalized that you can carry up to an ounce of marijuana in the city.

However, this contradicts federal law.

In other words, if a Denver Police officer catches you with marijuana under an ounce, he doesn't arrest you. If a fed catches you, you get in trouble.

Crazy, isn't it? Discuss.

I think its dumb. What moron voted yet on something contradicted? I swear...this is going to end bad.

Similar occurences have occured in my country. I used to go to US Customs all of the time and the parking there is pretty small so some people park outside in No-Parking zones.

I saw a car with 3 tickets, I thought you could only have 1 ticket per 2 hours. I also know that all visitors stay less than 15 minutes parked and then they leave. I asked a guard what was going on and he told me the guy got very unlucky. The local police gave him a ticket, then the state police gave him another and the federals (Customs Agents) gave him a third.

About Denver. Just gives us a note on who we are electing. Are we electing prestigious politicians or just someone who has the appearance of one?

Even if they legalize marijuana than they'd have to make booze against the law to keep too many people from goin crunk

I think weed is better legal than booze cause most people dont go crazy from weed like you do booze so its safer

If marijuana was legal, far less people would do it. There is far less incentive to start something that is perfectly legal. There is no rush from doing something you know is wrong. It's not like we're stopping people from using it by banning it.

There is so much money in the marijuana. It's a sitting gold mine. Legalize it.

SF has done a lot more unconstitutional things as well.. like banning guns... WE CANT HAVE ARMS IN THE HOUSE NO MORE... stupid but w/e
Probably they think that (they as in the people who let it through) think that the Constitution is nothing but Crud... so ya...
It is really dumb and stupid but who knows, later they will need like 50 pounds cuz no one can smoke one ounce of marijuana without another 100 ounces..

That's stupid. Denver is part of the United States, therefore it should have to follow federal laws...

I am strongly against legal drugs. Plus, it contradicting with the federal government, doesn't the federal government always have the last word? Doesn't a federal law overwrite a state?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Sie_Sayoka on 2005-11-17 at 22:06:04
The federal government should keep its grubby hands outta state laws. If a state has a law there is a good reason for it(well there should be) depending on the populance, environment ect.
So if denver allows an ounce of pot (seriously... you cant even get high off of it) they should be able to go untouched by the federal government.

That is why we are called the United States. im starting to think the south was doing the right thing.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Shapechanger on 2005-11-17 at 22:08:06
Then go protest with your army of tree huggers. The federal government holds the States together, else we would be fifty states, and not United.

Even if marijuana were legalized, you'd probably have to be over 21 to use it, like alcohol. So, DT, more people would probably end up doing it. It becomes not only illegal for young people to use, but also easier to obtain.

drinking age should be age 18 the same age where you can serve your country in the millitary. i think its dumb that you can serve at 18 but cant drink till 21.... although alchohal is dumb.

I think you should be 25, this stuff it bad, addicting and in my opinion, wayy worse than alchohol. Regardless of age, this thing should be "il"legazied. I feel the same way about how the amendment banning alchohol was repealed. They should re-illegalize it, not quickly, but gradually, and not just by giving a time limit of some years.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rantent on 2005-11-17 at 22:53:44
This has been a long debated topic in Alaska. Except our regulated amount would be 8 ounces. It will happen sometime. holiday.gif

Anyway, there are lots of laws that contradict federal law. It's simply the states rights. I say let them do what they want, one unified law should only be generalized, because laws mean different things in different places. (Not saying that I approve of the legalization of Marijuana) tongue.gif Takes all the fun out of it.

Hey! I'm 21 and haven't had any booze in almost 5 years! tongue.gif

But on the topic: Personally, I oppose the legalization of drugs. Even if they made them legal only after you reach a certain age, that wouldn't curb usage in the youth population (DTBK says that too). It would probably make it worse. Also, legalization period wouldn't reduce the number of users. How many alcoholics are there out in the world right now? Most of them can legally drink. The last thing I need is to go to somewhere and bump into a guy who's all jumped up on crack and has the law on his side. That stuff makes you CrAzY crazy.gif Drug users have enough loopholes in the system as it is (with all the rehabilitation programs, probation, etc...), we DO NOT need to give them even more leverage.

Just look at it this way: It is LEGAL to drink until drunk in front of your kids at home. Most agree this is wrong, but it is legal. Should it be legal to snort/smoke/inject drugs in front of them too? Should it be legal for the mother/father to be all hyper and twitchy and full of holes with their kids or family around? Good ol' Dad can blow the kids' college fund on alcohol and not be subject to any criminal punishment, but should he be given the same rights to blow it all on, well... BLOW? No no no no no!

As far as the law itself goes, I agree with Persephone. It's a state law that contradicts a federal law. It's bound to create some messy court cases. Just more of our precious tax dollars are gonna get wasted along with the stoners (BA-ZING!!)

can i see a source?

Also, I think that you should be able to smoke marijuana in the priovacy of your home. If you want to F*** up your mind and lungs than go ahead just do it in your home.

You're forgetting the point of not letting people below a certain age group do it.
And what's the difference if you're 23 and smoke pot or 25 and smoke pot? Youve got it all wrong.

Egfarkingsactly. People do it because of the rush, knowing they are doing something illegal.

I doubt more people are going to do it. Like I said, most do it for the thrill of knowing they are doing something illegal.

21 is a good age.

Drinking age should be 16, and licence age should be 18 like in Germany. Less DUI's that way.

Nowhere in any country's Constitution are the words "these plans will work because we've been smart enough to predict everything that will happen in this country's history". That's because we can't predict what will happen, ages change too rapidly.

Yeah but in Germany you have a lot more drivers ed. Also if you get your license taken away for doing something wrong your license is banned for life I think or at least taken away for a while and then u have to take drivers ed again. Not sure if im completely right on that. can someone back me up?

I don't know specificly the rules, I could ask my German teacher a week from next Mon, but they certainly take driving very seriously. German cars don't have cupholders because in their minds, when you drive, you drive. They're also extremely strict about enforcing parking meters.
