Staredit Network

Staredit Network -> SEN v5 Alpha -> Topic sub-titles...

Burning board software plays with these somewhat nice. The general idea is a topic in a forum can get marked as a catagory. Best example is website feedback, where, topic creators can add Suggestion: or Bug: before titles.

The idea of doing something like this was from a topic where dtbk said something about adding Solved: in solved topics.

Biggest drawback is user's not using them correctly, which would just be outright annoying.

Thoughts?

I say do it, it's not like it'll be too hard for the Moderators to fix it. People will also notice that when they use the correct tag, their thread will be given attention much more quickly.
If a user starts abusing it, we could just remove his priviledges for it.

I agree. I don't think abuse will be a problem at all.

Do you think it would be of any use to let people evaluate their assistance questions as "easy", "moderate" or "hard"? I realise that people could more easily abuse or misues these tags, but I see it like the idea of self-evaluation of mapping skill... which has some value, I think, even if it can be abused or misused.

What difference does it make how hard their assistance is? It's just for sub-catagorizing topics...

I'm not sure if I truly want to do this... it may be nice... or it could be ugly.
I think I'll probably look into it later... but I want the idea out there for discussion smile.gif

Basically, you can summarize the idea of sub titles as breaking down the forum into subforum catagories without creating subforums.
Recommend and Review is the best example because all the map types are in one. If someone wanted to look for UMS reviews, they can just scroll through the titles.

Map Assistance is a poor example... probably shouldn't even be included.

However...

If this does happen, perhaps we could re-combine some of the forums that were seperated but don't have much activity... like UMS Concepts and UMS Ideas....

Scale of 1 to 10... what do you think?

Now that I think about it again, I think you're right - there's not much point in giving the difficulty of a problem. I guess I was thinking that different people would answer different levels of problem... but now I think that that's unlikely anyway.

I support the joining of similar forums such as concepts/ideas.

In Website Feedback, is "Discussion:" used for suggestions as well? What do you expect "Feature:" to be used for?

Why do you think that it might look ugly? The fact that half the threads will have the same prefix on them?

addendum:
I was thinking - considering that the suggestions thread is about 29 pages long, would it be better to have a separate "Suggestions" (sub)forum, so that each suggestion can be discussed separately? You could also have tags such as "discussing:", "implemented:" and "rejected:".

It'd be neat, but only if used for certain forums (the Feedback example was nice).
I was thinking though (because I love CSS more then text) that you could keep the normal gray for the topics without "subtitles", a dark red for bugs or urgent "subtitles", and a dark green for suggestion "subtitles". I just think that speaks out more than a couple letters. Of course, this makes a slight learning curve - but SEN has one of those already. We do have an FAQ forum...

Also, I put "subtitles" in quotations because I'm not sure if that's what you'd call them if you did go with a CSS method. wink.gif

Color-coding would get annoying. Bolded text preceding the title should do.

Yea, and people might mislabel things because they want their topic to be a certain color rolleyes.gif

I'm not saying extreme examples, but just a slightly lighter color to give the topic more attention...Of course, I was thinking of only using it for the Feedback forum.

I like the bolding idea, though, DTBK. smile.gif

i think that once you get past 'just here for the pie' you should be able to mark topics as solved.
Maybye a bit higher for other tags?

Hmm, this could be cool.

I think that topics that would go under the "Discussion:" category are redundant.

Marking as solved is fine left for moderator and topic owner.
