Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> 0 BC/AD//DD?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Diggidoyo on 2005-12-12 at 23:44:01
We all know any time referenced more than 2005 years ago is referenced with the title "BC" as in Before Christ. And in the current time, we refrence today, as well as the past 2004 years as "AD" (After [the] Death [of Christ]). I have two questions:

1. What do we call the year 0? The only thing I could come up with was DD for "During Death" or a parody of "Doom's Day".

2. What do other religions call it? And more importantly, how do they reference time at all? If any of you are or know about other religions do you still refer to time as BC/AD and have different acronyms, or do you have a different time refrence altogether. For instance, the event of Chanukah happened over 2300 years ago. So to them, are we in the year 2305?

we use BC and AD because there are 2 times the years show up in a "time line", for example:
lets say its the year 2005 XD
we make that AD because its after 0, not before

we dont need to put AD or BC for 0 because there is only one zero
(my example sucked)

AD doesn't mean "After Death"

It's short for Anno Domini (I'm not sure with the spelling) which is Latin for "The year of our lord"

Edit: I don't think there is a 0 in history, because Christ was born in the year 1 -_-

The current international trade system is run on the Gregorian calender, which uses the BC/AD year numbers. There are many other calenders out there with different years. A lot of them are created by other religions (It could be year 9674 by some calender somewhere) and I'm sure there are people loyal to those various ones, but the current system of the world runs on the Gregorian calender.

Never was a year zero, the same reason why there wasn't a 0th century.

Ack... *Slaps forehead*... of course. Anno Domini.

So are you guys saying it went straight from 1 BC to 1 AD?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Do-0dan on 2005-12-13 at 00:48:13
ur sig......it's caught me in a trance... O.O
yes it skipped from 1 BC to 1 AD
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Sie_Sayoka on 2005-12-13 at 00:52:54
lmao no-0b

yeh... if AD did infact means after death there would be 30 something years that would be undecided....

1BC-30 years of christ living-1AD

but i believe they use BCE and AD now for some stupid reason.
BCE means before common era what the HELL does that mean?!

Probably to be more polically correct as with numerous other things.... But everything is still referenced around Jesus Christ. How do other religions feel about/explain that?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Sie_Sayoka on 2005-12-13 at 01:50:38
explain... huh? i know that the muslims have thier own calendar(when muhammid was visited by gabriel) and so do the koreans and several other asian countries.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Diggidoyo on 2005-12-13 at 01:54:50
That explains the Chinese New Year. So what year are we in according to the muslims?

In Taiwan, we use another system other than AD. It doesn't have a short term abbreviation in English (at least not that I know of). It's the number of years after the fall of Qing dynastY (1911 AD) by revolution forces inspired and gathered by Sun Yi Xian , and the form of the Republic of China (Taiwan). So right now we are "Republic (of China) 94 years" (literally translated). However after a lot of influence from the Western world, we kind of adopted the use of AD as well.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Diggidoyo on 2005-12-13 at 02:07:10
So how were things documented before 1911? (Wierd similarities to 9/11 blink.gif )
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Screwed on 2005-12-13 at 02:31:35
There is a rarely used Before Republic (Modern use only, and only used to date things that are close to the revolution), so most of the time they put the name of the current King or Queen (might include the dynasty as well), and how many years the King or Queen have been King or Queen. For example, a famous Chinese philosophist and educator Ke (He might be known for the name people gave him after his death - Mun Tzi) was born on "Jhou Lie Wang 4 years" (which is 372 BC). This method is rather confusing and also difficult because you have to remember all the 47 dynasties and all the kings and queens that were in reign in chronological order (a lot of children were forced to learn that for their first social studies lesson at school =\). Sometimes during a certain period of time China is in riot and there is no definite king or queen, so they refer to the name of that riot period instead (namely Spring and Autumn period and Warring States period). As you can see, most of you may have been so damn confused already by this system... so modern books will include both the traditional dating method and the Westerm dating method - the AD.

Note: Note that my roman alphabet spellings of the translations may not be universal. Someone may spell it differently and pronounce it the same way.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Sie_Sayoka on 2005-12-13 at 04:37:13
yeah thats how japans dating used to be according to the dynasties. but now i think they use AD since it is one of the most western influenced countries in asia.

screwed your from taiwan? cool

To be politically correct, it would be BCE (Before Common Era) and CE (Common Era), which is stupid because where the hell do they get the time reference for this 'common era'. I hate the government now.

Yeah you're right that would be the most politically correct way to put it. But it still seems based upon the christian religion. I guess there's no way around it.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Sie_Sayoka on 2005-12-13 at 18:54:13
the christian religion deeply influenced the western world but now they are trying to erradicate it. they should just stick to BC and AD.

I'm surprised nobody's tried to change the year for the sake of "political correctness".
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Diggidoyo on 2005-12-14 at 01:00:29
Its too late.... Two Thousand and Five years too late to be precise. There's no way to convince the world that the date needs to be changed. I'm sure its a touchy subject. First guy to bring up Daylights Savings Time was probably killed on the spot.

Was it really? I thought it would be alot earlier than that, not so recent. Doesn't that mean we have already lost months worth of time?
