Okay, I am working on an animated short film for my final project in college. Above is a movie still of the main female character in the movie. It should give you an idea about what the movie looks like. It's a big project, and I knew this, which is why I started it about a year and a half ago.

But since I began, I have become bored with the anime genre. Because of this, it is difficult for me to draw the characters because I no longer like what I'm drawing. Which is why I'm strongly considering starting over and redrawing the movie with redesigned characters. I've spent most of the day on a single frame of the movie because I couldn't get it to look the way I want. I'll never finish it at this rate. It's about 1/3 finished, but I know I can draw way faster than I have been, it's just difficult for me to get energized about the project because of the way it looks. I'm proud of the story, just not the LOOK of the movie. Plus, I need to finish it in order to graduate.

The voice actors have already done their work, so I won't need them again. What I would like from you guys is suggestions about style. Also, I haven't completely given up on keeping it the way it is, so if you think you can talk me in to staying my course, then feel free. But my boredom with genre, coupled with constant accusations of being a copycat, have depleted my drive for making this thing. I DO NOT want to quit the movie, I just want some of that spark back by having some new ideas.

Speak your mind, friends.

yeah... anime is alright but you shouldnt of used the DBZ type of anime. the same thing happend to me. i thought DBZ was the greatest in the world and i got really tallented in it. but then it got really dull and i started drawing differnt types of anime. but you should just keep on doing it i mean... you already started it why not finish?

if you do not like that idea you could change the type of animation slowly(they wont notice will they?) or use some kind of thing that intertwines with the story to change it...

PS. WITH THIS POST I HAVE ENTERED REGULARHOOD!!!

I can't change the style during the movie hahaha tongue.gif

I have plans for this thing beyond school. I'm working on obtaining grant money so I can go across the country and show it at different festivals. With the eventual goal to take it to one of the major TV networks in the hopes of getting it turned into a series (I think it has a chance of catching on). One thing I've thought of is finishing it in anime style and perhaps changing the look of it if it gets picked up by a network (unless they think otherwise, I just DON'T wanna be an animator on it).

And you're right. Redrawing it would be a lot more work than necessary, but anime just doesn't move me the way it used to.

THANK YOU!!! People subject my movie to all of their anime stereotypes. That is something I'm afraid of though. I'm afraid people will make too many assumptions about it just because of the way it looks. It's not a cliche anime. There's no asian culture, no giant sweatdrops, no noisy eating, no falling off the screen in embarassment, no card duels, no changing hair color (unless its dyed, or something), no giant robots, no ninjas, no saving the world, no aliens, no thought bubbles with "..." in them, no sleeping nose bubbles, no crazy hairstyles, no girly men, no chibi versions of the characters in cutaways, no blue lines going down their foreheads, etc. I avoid the camerawork that is typically used to introduce main heroes/heroins/villains, etc., in anime. Therefor, it DOES NOT have to look like an anime, but could easily look like anything.

Your opinion is valid, but I'd like to know why NOT anime, and what would you suggest as an alternative?

stick with anime. you cant change it to a stick figure action movie although that would have been one good movie if you drew up the background and some story plot to it...

No ninjas?!?!?!? No giant sweatdrops?!?!!? I'm fine with the no card duels (Duel Masters and Yu-Gi-Oh, I burneth thee at thy stake, and selleth thy Yu-Gi-Oh cards for thy big cash...eth), but how could you not include random chibi? It's not anime without the above (except ninjas, you can leave those out of some animes). If you're bored with anime and not including the above, then you should just change to american weird drawing biggrin.gif

no stick with my idea with the stick figures... they are awesome.

You could always make it like don hertzfeld. Frighteningly detailed stick figures.

LOL! No stick figures! No offense to stick figure fans (some stick figure cartoons are pretty cool), but I don't want this to look like an internet cartoon someone threw together in a couple of days.

Hehehe. I didn't say there was anything WRONG with internet cartoons (although some are ludicrous), I just don't want my movie to have that feel. That was the main reason I forbid myself to learn flash animation, I didn't want any shortcuts (that I'm not already taking, like photoshop coloring tongue.gif ). I have a lot of admiration for animators from the golden days who had to hand paint all the pictures, and had no help with modeling from computers. If they drew a swurving car, they had to get all the dimensions right in every frame using only pencils, protractors, rulers, etc., and pictures to look at for reference.

I'm making it tough on myself out of respect for them hahaha.
