My ideas for punishments:
Murder - Quartering
Rape - Crucifixion
Armed Robbery - Loss of a Hand
Attempted Murder - Jail time
Grand Larceny - Loss of a Hand.
I think the government needs to have more vicious, severe punishments. It will serve as an excellent deterrent for others. I'm so sick of hearing "Man kills 7, walks on parole."
People bring up that life in prison is cheaper than the death penalty.
I say that a .45 bullet costs about 50ยข and takes about two seconds to kill someone.
Crime is CRIME, there is no excuse. Either make something illegal or don't. That simple.

I flat out agree with you. If people know they are going to lose a hand or their life for commiting a crime, they won't do it!

Its kind of an "overzealous" punishment... and sick... I know that rape is terrible but being crucified is like having body parts cut off with a dull machete... it should be more like. Attempted murder would be jail time but there are levels of attempted murder like shooting someone vs. hitting them with fists. Quatering for murder is a little too much but I guess its fair... 
And loss of a hand for theft... the ways of the Middle East... I would arrange the punishment differently
Rape - Loss of sexual organs.
Murder - For every death, cut off 2 body parts.

yeah code of hamurabi is like if you steal something you gotta pay 10x as much or you die. or something like that its very similar.
amputations are not always the best solution.

I would say only severe punishments for severe crimes. I mean if you get into a bar fight and were defending yourself, but every one says you started it I don't think you should lose an arm.

You aren't guilty if it is in self-defense. Or if you are REALLY drunk. (usually)
This isn't based of Hammurabi's code, though it is similiar in some respects. Don't forget that Hammurabi was by FAR the most powerful leader of his time, and you know why? A steady society enforced by laws.
Is killing someone else to remove them from society murder? No.
It is a permanent measure to keep them away from other people. And it serves as a great deterrent.
It chlorinates the gene pool a bit too.
ADDITION:
I came up with this saying when I was watching Law & Order Special Victims Unit. (Entirely about rape and molestation)

yeah but most rapists dont fillet people before/after they rape someone... but if they do they deserve to be filleted or w/e

This thread is a bunch of useless conjecture. These kinds of "punishments" will never take effect in the U.S. or a European nation. All you're doing is thinking up theoretical consequences to the U.S. and State governmental definitions of crimes and their severity.

You guys are sick and twisted, seriously.
That's basically back to animal instincts, we could atleast have some human in us and let them have jail time and more of a civilized way to deal with crime then to chop off limbs and harm others for what they did. They could be mentally unstable, or anything else along those lines.

If there's something wrong with them, mental hospital. Otherwise, either torture till death or cut off body parts. 
Isn't quartering typing both hands & feet to 4 seperate horses and having them move in different directions? Or is that drawing and quartering..
Oh, and another good one is taking a box with one hole on one endwith a rat, and lighting the end opposite the end with the hole and pressing the end with the hole against the persons belly.. The rat claws its way out.

Yeah well some people are sick and twisted and they torture people before they die. You take a life... you pay a life. Imagine being strung up to the ceiling while someone cuts you open with a scapal because they enjoy hearing you scream. Shouldn't they die the same way? "An eye for an eye"

Honestly, losing your wang sounds a lot worse than going to jail. I'd be more likely to commit a crime with the punishments we have now.
