I've been avoiding posting topics here because I just don't value the average SENers opinion very much... especially ones from cocky little kids. However, I was a part of the argument asking for this forum, so I feel I owe a solid effort. That doesn't mean I'm not lazy... so here's to renewing an old topic I made. Keep it reasonably serious.

Ground Rules:

-Please do not say someone else's music sucks, that's totally opinion.
-When asked your favorite, just pick one (at most 3) band(s), I don't want a list.
-Please answer the main points of discussion.
-Please organise seperate points of discussion with paragraphs.
-Use appropriate spelling and grammar.
-Follow my example if you're confused.

List of things to discuss (try to answer all of them, unless your answer is pathetically irrelevent):

What bands/kind of music you listened to when you first got into music.
What you think of what you first listened to.
If you prefer bands where the sound is unedited, and you're just hearing them (ie, live).
What your favorite bands are at the moment.
If you think you'll still be listening to them later in life.
If you think the music you like will die with your age group.
If you think the Radio does a good job music wise.
Your basic philosophy on what makes music good.
Any little known band you think deserves to be listened to.

What bands/kind of music you listened to when you first got into music.

Treble Charger, Sum 41, and various other punk/indish bands.

What you think of what you first listened to.

Sum 41 managed to rhyme every lyric, while still having a general meaning to the song... to me that's fairly impressive, but they're petty compared to what I like now. Treble Charger still rocks out (they're as good as dead now, but I still like the music they did make).

If you prefer bands where the sound is unedited, and you're just hearing them (ie, live).

I prefer bands that can preform live, because I think they have more talent, and have worked harder to get where they are. It also seems they're less about image (I dislike musicians, who are more about the image than the music, I actually prefer no image). To me, musicians that need help to sound good, aren't worth listening to.

What your favorite bands are at the moment.

Our Lady Peace at the moment. Incredibly talented vocalist, crazy bass solos, and just a sound I really enjoy. I also like Jag Panzer, but mostly because they have Chris Broderick (aka most underated guitarist of all time).

If you think you'll still be listening to them later in life.

Definitly. I think I'll be listening to them long after I've finished school. I've bought all their albums (except for live, because I have the DVD of that). Maybe I'm naive, but I'm pretty "loyal" to bands I listen to.

If you think the music you like will die with your age group.

Yes, but only because I have very little respect for people much younger than me (not because they're younger than me, just their age group produces a lot of people I don't like).

If you think the Radio does a good job music wise.

No. Most stations only play big name hits, which only succeeds in killing good (sometimes) songs and keeping little bands from getting heard. It's the opposite of what I think radio in modern society should be used for (spreading new bands). Radio would seem to be currupted by ratings.

Your basic philosophy on what makes music good.

Devotion to making the music, as apposed to selling it. If a band isn't making music for the sake of music, they generally aren't appealing to me.

Any little known band you think deserves to be listened to.

The Paper Chase, if you like emotional indie music... otherwise stay away.

Your turn. Also, feel free to suggest new points of discussion, or have a friendly argument about someones opinion on a point of discussion (try not to argue with someone when it's almost impossibly to influence them though).

What bands/kind of music you listened to when you first got into music.

Lighter "rock" stuff like Hoobastank, AFI, Ra, the Misfits, etc.. (this was when I was 13 or so, about two years ago)

What you think of what you first listened to.

I've essentially disowned that stuff, except for a couple like the Misfits. By now I see what it really is; mainstream trash. Granted, it's some of the better stuff, but it's still shallow "I play to the whims of 12 year old girls" crap.

If you prefer bands where the sound is unedited, and you're just hearing them (ie, live).

I do enjoy good live albums, but a number of the studio efforts I have rely somewhat on the production for the desired effect. Bands that play live very well (Vader, Decapitated, Morbid Angel, Emperor, etc.) are always good though.

What your favorite bands are at the moment.

Dissection, because Storm of the Light's Bane is amazing. Icy, melodic black/death metal with the requisite balance of speed and consistency. Plus the lyrics are a notch or four above the average black metal stuff.
Sepultura, due to what I consider their best three albums: Schizophrenia (1987), Beneath the Remains (1989), and Arise (1991). Great death metal and thrash releases with lyrics relevant to global issues, as opposed to some stupid whiny crap about your sad suburban life in California.
Vader. Polish death metal band with some seriously killer albums. They tour incessantly and have multiple excellent live releases, which is the mark of a dedicated band. Not to mention the awesome riffs. :headbang:

If you think you'll still be listening to them later in life.

Of course, but I also listen to various non-metal things; Tom Waits, trance, Primus (and all the Claypool-related stuff), Leftöver Crack, etc. But my main thing is metal, in all its various forms.

If you think the music you like will die with your age group.

Some genres (black metal, thrash [granted, classic thrash was laid to rest around 1994]) have grown increasingly stagnated, with only a limited number of acclaimed releases in the last few years. Metal will not die, though. Metal is immortal. Likewise, Immortal is metal.

If you think the Radio does a good job music wise.

fark no. Radio stations farking suck. They just play the same stupid singles over and over and over and over. Underground/internet radio stations are different, though. They actually play stuff that isn't exploiting some artist's popularity, and plus you can choose what to listen to.

Your basic philosophy on what makes music good.

Good composition, of course, which is an extremely wide field, given the range of music genres and sub-genres and all the various styles they employ. Simplicity works, or is even necessary, for some forms of music, others require or use complexity. Then there's the general theme, which I prefer to be something mature and developed, thus why I loathe farking emo bands/fans. Then there's the money factor, which I think needs to be destroyed.

Any little known band you think deserves to be listened to.

Negligence, the band I posted a thread about. cool1.gif

What bands/kind of music you listened to when you first got into music.

i got into alternative rock.

What you think of what you first listened to.

i still listen to alternative rock. its great but when i listen to too much of it it all starts sounding the same.

If you prefer bands where the sound is unedited, and you're just hearing them (ie, live).

well i like songs where the sound is edited. its higher quality and there may be more instruments than if it was played live. however unedited and live music is good too.

What your favorite bands are at the moment.

hmm thats a hard one. i would have to say damian marley or kapena(hawaiian reggae band)

If you think you'll still be listening to them later in life.

yes they are very good and thier music is wonderful.

If you think the music you like will die with your age group.

REGGAE WILL NEVER DIE!

If you think the Radio does a good job music wise.

yes they have good songs. mostly ones that i have on my computer right now. however they do not have all good songs. some of them are just stupid and repetative.

Your basic philosophy on what makes music good.

whatever sounds good. the beat the voice the rythm. rhyming helps. also the message they are talking about.

Any little known band you think deserves to be listened to.

Stop using red, it's harder to read (which defeats the whole ****ing purpose of using colours).

What bands/kind of music you listened to when you first got into music.

I was making music at 12, but didn't get into listening to other bands till about 13 or 14. I was mostly into heavy metal at the time.

What you think of what you first listened to.
It was pretty lame and directed towards people that were my age.

If you prefer bands where the sound is unedited, and you're just hearing them (ie, live).

Since I formed a band just a couple weeks ago, we've decided to only editing for certain things. For example, we don't have enough people to do all the oo's and ahh's, so we have to play a disc of them if we do it alive. Until we get enough money to hire a choir that is.

What your favorite bands are at the moment.
Don't have one.

If you think the music you like will die with your age group.

Not sure. Leaning towards no.

If you think the Radio does a good job music wise.

Step one to making music; Turn off the radio.

Your basic philosophy on what makes music good.

Nostalgia and other people's opinions.

Any little known band you think deserves to be listened to.
This time next year, the one I'm in hopefully.

Highly Doubt it

If you think the Radio does a good job music wise.

What bands/kind of music you listened to when you first got into music.

It was mostly eminem, blink-182 and well if you go back to when l was about 7 it would be the wiggles (l don't like them now though).

What you think of what you first listened to.

I thought blink-182's song were really cool as in every song they had a catchy beat, and well eminem song's also had a good beat. And well the wiggles l can't remember why l liked them.

If you prefer bands where the sound is unedited, and you're just hearing them (ie, live).

I don't really mind because now that l am into techno and trance l no it is hard to preform live. But l don't like bands/group that can't play any musical instruments.

What your favorite bands are at the moment.

Well it would still have to be eminem and blink-182 (even though they spilt up) l still like listening to their old songs.

If you think you'll still be listening to them later in life.

Eminem well l hope l still will be and blink-182 l'm not sure as new music is coming out everyday and l tend to forget old songs sad.gif

If you think the music you like will die with your age group.

Yes l think so, it's like when your in the car with your grandparents and they have the radio on and they think that the music they are listening to is really good and then they change the channel for you and it is a techno based song and they think that the cd has got stuck or scratched.

If you think the Radio does a good job music wise.

No not really as most of the time they don't play classic songs like from ABBA and many other classic/famous bands.

Any little known band you think deserves to be listened to.

I reckon if you haven't heard some of the songs by 3 Doors Down you should as they are a pretty good band with some good songs.

[sub]What bands/kind of music you listened to when you first got into music.

I don't think I was really 'into' music then, but it would be around the 4th or 5th grade. I liked whatever was popular at the time, and at this time is pop. As far as bands go.. I can't really remember too many of them, Im tring to say Smash Mouth, was that a band? Anyways, it was what everyone was lsitening to at the time, and all I had at the time was the radio, and my CD player, the problem was, I only had one or two CDs.

What you think of what you first listened to.

I was young, and I don't really remember. I didnt love it, I remember that, I was just listening to it because it was what everyone else was doing, and I wanted to fit in. I also began watching tons of movies at this time, because msot conversations at school were quoting movies, back when we thought 'Half Baked' was the best movie ever, because it was about pot.

If you prefer bands where the sound is unedited, and you're just hearing them.

I like live music, it can sometimes go both ways, some live songs sound alot better then the normal recored verson, and sometimes, it sounds terrible. An example of this would be anything by 'Motley Crue' live sounds terrible, because they were always so fu cked up at their concerts in the 80s. But everything that was recorded at the studio, when they were 'more' sober, sounds alot better.

What your favorite bands are at the moment.

I just made a list in that other thread, so I wont repeat them, but basically, I like classic rock and 80s metal. Any rock the 60s to 80s sounds good to me. The Doors to Motley Crue.

If you think you'll still be listening to them later in life.

I have been listening to this music for a few years now, and its not changing, so yeah. Im sure I will be listening to this kind of music untill the day I die. Sounds good to me, eh?

If you think the music you like will die with your age group.

My music does not fit in with my age group, and it hasent died yet. So I think it was beat the test of time. My music has pretty much made me a minority at school, and I have no problems with that.

If you think the Radio does a good job music wise.

The Radio in general usally sticks with that is popular. My local area has about 2 stations that play classic rock, and both do a good job keeping it popular for us that listen to it. But in general, no, I don't think the radio does a good job.

Your basic philosophy on what makes music good.

Im pretty cool with almost any type of music, but I love rock & roll. Im not sure why, I just do. I like the same bands my parents did, so they are prolly the reason I love it. And it only took me the first 12 years of my life to relize it.

Any little known band you think deserves to be listened to.

Underrated bands? Hmm, I would go with Creedence Clearwater Revival, Electric Light Orchestra, CSNY, and umm, Allman Brothers Band. All those are great 60s, and 70s bands that never really took off, but still have great music.[/sub]
