Staredit Network -> Portal News -> Proedit 1.3 Flaw!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2004-05-29 at 00:24:47
Theres a flaw in Proedit 1.3 that allows unprotection via program.

I ask that everyone refrain from protecting their maps using this, and instead use the Starforge protector until I can notify Clokr_ of this.

Details on how will not be released.

UPDATE - Bolt recommends NOT to use the starforge protector. It can cause errors to your map. Since I've never used the starforge one, its best to listen to him.

If you know of any protectors that we do not currently have inside of our downloads database, please inform me thank you!

some people said they wee able to get through proedit on b.net

I would suggest you don't use starforge protector. version 2.0 adds a columb of tiles to the right side of the map. If a person plays that map before any other maps during his session of Starcraft the game will crash for that player.

Yeah, that happened to me before with StarForge. Perhaps its best to use whatever old-school method you did before these fancy new protectors came out.

Its starting to get tough I say. I'm surrying around the internet to find a good protector - none to be found.

Well finally someone noticed it.

*Statement removed to protect current maps*

It would also help if someone actually told the creator.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by evolipel on 2004-05-29 at 11:04:15
He's not on AIM (the only place I would know of to reach him at this time), so nobody can tell him right now. But what can he do? If this method can unprotect PROEdit, what can't it unprotect? This could be stopped if the editor program is updated to disallow any map that looks even semi-protected.

I guess the only consolation is that the strings will still be messed up.

Mmm people seem to be talking over my head.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2004-05-29 at 11:15:31
We have to do our best. SCMdraft may be getting a protection method soon. I'm begging Suicidial right now smile.gif

Well, you've got it easy, we had to beg him NOT to have a Unprotector part to SCMDraft 2.0

I think SCMToolkit is rather good, but in the end, just admit someone might take your map.

You could always use the togi protector. Its on warboards.com.

Man I should have came here like I usually do everyday before I tried protecting a map...god damn Proedit now I can't protect it at all...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by evolipel on 2004-05-29 at 21:34:22
SI doesn't want to do anything about SCMDraft at this point.

<SI> he sent me a PM
<SI> which I ignored
<SI> since I have always said I won't do protection
<SI> so I dont have to unprotect for the noobs that lose backups

I guess it's all up to Clokr_ now. BTW that new "alternative" protection sucks. And it's not "difficult" either. It's also possible to unprotect it with 7 steps.

dark days... so much censored.gif 's out there who are always trying to steal your map.... we got to hunt them down in real life and show them a thing or to.

i figured proedit would be a good protection. but these retards half to mess every thing up god i hate it. unprotecting maps is so noobish. there just a hole bunch of wanna bee's!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2004-05-30 at 11:39:33
I'm trying my best here, but really, I cant think of anything else.

The Togi protector is enough, its possible to unprotect (got PM'ed with details) however its harder to do than Proedit.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2004-05-30 at 11:39:49
What i do to my maps is like when i am testing it i protect it with proedit, and then name it like gfd so the ppl who want to mod the map can't find it. (unless they arrange the maps by modification date). biggrin.gif

"noobish"?

Meh you try it. Harder than using your script-kiddie program someone else coded for you (be it Clokr_ or whoever). However, programs like SCU make unprotection very easy for n00bs to do. Very few people who have the patience/ability to unprotect the next-gen protections are jackasses nor do they try to "mess up" a map.

He has a large point evolipel. N00bs unprotect maps so they can gain popularity. How is that fair? Why did you even post that?... it's disgraceful to every true map maker! ranting.gif Death to all n00bs!

That was painful to read, very painful. Just to keep the peace I won't start anything...

If someone tried to steal my map, unprotect it, modify my piece of work, and claim it as their own, I think I might be a little pissed off.

And here you are, basically praising the n00bs who STEAL our maps simply because it takes a little bit of work. Well, in case you haven't frigg'n realized yet, it takes a HELL of a lot more work to actually MAKE a map.

...I hate the n00bish thieves... disgust.gif I doubt there are any people here who don't, and if there are, they don't deserve to come to this great website.

Felagund... as they say on /., RTFA (or RTFP in this case) now.

Jesus Christ, I said that most n00bs don't KNOW how to unprotect the new-generation protections (toGi is the only one left).

"And here you are, basically praising the n00bs who STEAL our maps simply because it takes a little bit of work. Well, in case you haven't frigg'n realized yet, it takes a HELL of a lot more work to actually MAKE a map."

Uhh... I'm a former mapmaker. I'm not praising newbs. Notice how I said they don't have the skills to unprotect.

"He has a large point evolipel. N00bs unprotect maps so they can gain popularity. How is that fair? Why did you even post that?... it's disgraceful to every true map maker! Death to all n00bs!"

Agreed. But I didn't say that it was fair that n00bs should unprotect. I said it's fair that if you have enough knowledge to unprotect (WITHOUT ANYONE ELSE'S HELP), you should be able to see how crap works/be proud of yourself/whatever... HOWEVER, I didn't mean that they're allowed to steal the map or take credit for it.

I hope I've cleared up some stuff.

This post was edited to correct the acronym: RTFP, not STFA (lol it was way too late in the night). It means "Read the F***ing Article" or "Read the F***ing Post" in this case. Yes it is a very touchy subject.
