Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> Sound Malfunction

Okay, here's the deal...

I made a campaign that features some large sounds, so to make it more download friendly, I made smaller versions of some of the sounds to replace in the copy of the campaign that I'm going to release. I was able to successfully replace all the sounds in all but one of the levels, and that one is the problem. For some reason, when I go to import the sounds, they aren't on the menu. However, the file size changes as if they were there, but they can't be found on the menu. If I delete the original sound (music, actually) and try to replace it with the smaller version, it STILL doesn't show up, yet the map's filesize increases. In other words, I could continually import the same sound and make the map filesize keep growing forever, but never have the sounds available in the menu.

It's official. The time to panic is now... HEEEELLLLPPPPPP!!!!!

What editor are you using? It could just be a StarForge or SCMDraft bug.

can you open them in winamp and or windows media player?

they might be corrupted
try to import them into a new map, just make a new one and import em, see what happens

Yes, they play on the media player. I can import those sounds into any other map except for that one. I've tried making copies of it and moving around in different folders, but nothing seems to work. The filespace is used, but I have no sound in the menu.

I have come up with a way around this. Oddly, it DID work about a month ago when I made low-sized maps for testing by other people. Luckily, I was able to just use one of those test copies and correct the bugs the testers found. The original problem wasn't solved, so I'd still like to know what went wrong, but I found a way around it.

Could you write a tutorial on how to get around it? I'm sure it'd be a great help to anyone else with the bug.

There was no skill involved, LOL. It was dumb luck.

When I made the campaign, I filled it with music and it was almost 100 mb in size. Obviously, that's not practical for submitting to the site, so I cut most of it out and replaced the important ones with lower quality versions of themselves in order to make a "release print." For some reason, it worked just fine then with all of the levels, and I sent those copies out to the people who agreed to test my campaign.

After they reported back to me, I went back and fixed all the bugs they found in the original version and set out to make new copies of it in order to submit to the site. But for some strange reason, one of the levels had the bug I talked about in the first post. I COULD NOT, for the life of me, figure out why it was happening. Luckily, I still had the copies with the smaller sound files that I made for testers, so I just fixed one of them (fixed the bugs the testers found) and used that as the "offical release" version. If I didn't have that other copy that worked the first time, I don't know what I would've done. I almost deleted them, I'm glad I didn't.

I don't understand the bug. It's a total mystery to me, and I never solved it. Its like my computer refuses to allow that particular level to have any new sounds. But for some reason, it worked fine a month ago, so I just used one of the other copies. Maybe my comp has a virus or something, but that wouldn't explain why it worked for all the other maps except for that one.

So to answer your question, Lurkeregg, the problem mysteriously appeared and I was just lucky that I'd made other copies that worked before the bug appeared. That's why I don't think it deserves a tutorial. If someone else had this problem, and had no pre-existing copies, then I wouldn't know what to tell them other than GG.
