Staredit Network

Staredit Network -> Portal News -> Staredit.net Domain

At first, this was supposed to be a puny site for me to test my newbieish webmastering skills and get better. Plus, it was an even greater excuse to pursue my hobby - UMS map making.

Regardless, this site expanded, grew and thrived at a exponential rate. Although 6 years late, Staredit Network is now the largest resource of map making.

We've done skyscrapers to hack detection in the starcraft engine.

When we look back at classics, what Staredit was SUPPOSED to do, like Zergling roundup and Race of death...

I realize one thing...

We screwed with Starcraft bad.

Thus, it is the time for me to decide if I should renew the domain.

Domain renewed. Another year of map making fun!

Watch out internet, here comes Staredit Network wink.gif

Thanks to all our affiliates for making this site possible, the clan (U) people for supporting us, and countless contributing individuals that made this site what it is. I may program and administrate it, but the hard work and support came from community and support comes from everyone else smile.gif

Yes, I'll stop making these big mushy posts soon.

Mushy... Sensitive... That's our Yoshi. You weren't really considering not renewing the domain, were you?

Yes indeed.

I remember when i came to this site a long long time ago and quite honestly i didnt like it. The tutorials were no good and i didnt find anything usefull.

But all that has changed and this is litterally the best site for starcraft map making.

Hopefully Yoshi can stop making these mushy posts. We all know that youre a softy yoshi. wink.gif

I told you, I was a sucky webmaster back then. The site was mainly based in HTML with ugly PHP script add-ons.

This little baby has come a long way smile.gif

I actually visited the site way back before there was much content. I never thought it'd get off the ground, but look at it now. There's almost too much content.

Yeah, the site started to get good after I came... especially since I started to join a game and just started to type http://www.staredit.net/ to wannabe mapeditors.

Is it just me or did staredit.net also have a huge growth spurt after the map tricks archive was put up.

It seems like a bunch of members from blizzforums came to look at it.

Actually, its funny how our name got out.

After TSE went down, almost every website was linked starforge and was leaching bandwidth. Heimdal took down it, because of his resign from the Starcraft community.

These websites rushed to find a copy of Starforge, which they found on yours truely. All our files are hosted locally.

This website grew mostly because of the "you make one account and you're a member for the whole site" thing, but there was also major support from (U), many contributing individuals, active website, awsome affiliates and kick ass "administrator confirmed" maps!

Although, Bolt's map making topic is what really got our name out, and Proedit 1.3.

lol, PROEdit...

tongue.gif Say Yoshi, did Clokr_ tell you when he was gonna release a new version? I'm asking because of...

Cokr_'s protection is what I'll use.

By the way, NFC-Archn never made SCU. Hes just an idiot who takes other peoples programs and hexs it to his name.

I doubt the guy who made SCU is around anymore, because his program never got off. Archn can't make another SCU program because he has no programming skill.

Although Clokr_ is probably going to be done by the time the map gets released...

BTW -- A little off topic, but wasn't Heimdal the person who made SCU? Because I remember clearly that on BattleForums, Heimdal was trying to prove to the general public that he wrote the unprotection article/created SCU.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SpaceBoy2000 on 2004-05-31 at 21:30:10
Hmm, I think Heimdal created SCU as well, though I probably read the same thread as BlizzForums. Although SCU is sometimes useful for serious map makers who don't do dumb things like change people's name, it's best left untouched to the general public due to all the lamers around.

Anyways, there's always manual unlocking with a hex editor, though it beats me how to do it.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2004-05-31 at 21:43:49
He did do it, but he didn't do it to mess up the SC community. He did purely for experimental, but a version got leaked to Archn, which he hexed it with his own name.

Which is why I said, there will be no more SCU versions because Archn isn't a programmer. Hes just a 10 year old kit desperately seaking attention.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by evolipel on 2004-05-31 at 22:25:27
Hmm... This might seem a little drastic, but how about SEN provide SCU purely to the highest-ranking members? There's a link on [a website] so it's not off limits to some n00blars. mellow.gif

However, there's also toGi protector, StarForge protector, and the new PROEdit that Clokr_ might make, which are still off-limits to SCU. However, every map has an unprotection. StarCraft needs only a couple of sections to run the map, the rest are purely for StarEdit. StarForge and SCMDraft require less accurate sections to run than StarEdit, but they still need more than StarCraft.

SCMDraft, however, could run any map with its vital sections perfectly, but SI made it so that it doesn't ignore "impurities" within maps (to respect map protection/disallow n00bs from getting in protected maps). The same could be said with GUEdit.

I have an extremely ambitious idea:
Perhaps, as a major project, some person with sufficient programming skill (I would say Heimdal but he's already left the community, or maybe Clokr_) could create a StarCraft map editor with its own, completely different map format than that of StarCraft. This could be used purely as a mapmaking tool in order to share map secrets with fellow mapmakers without letting them take credit for anything on Bnet. There could also be a converter that converts maps from the normal format to the "new" format that lets people see how triggers work, etc... This converter should be able to convert even protected maps, so that people could see their questions like "in this map, blah blah blah" answered. HOWEVER, there should be no deconverter, which converts the "new" maps to their original counterparts, because we don't want to steal people's credit for making maps that they put their hard work into.

crazy.gif Sure, it's a very crazy idea, but if it gets completed, the whole "unprotection" issue could be solved, and SEN will get its name sweeped even further into the StarCraft hall of fame (aka get much more popular). As lazy as I am, I could even help with some of the coding.

Heimdal promised to release one last version of Starforge to THIS site, hes a great guy wink.gif

And unprotectors are not encouraged here. We do not do anything like what you ware saying sorry. We're doing everything we can do STOP it!

And isn't the point of personal customization of games to make it do something that nobody else has? What else would be the point of edits? They'd really all be the same...

Sorry for exercising my freedom of speech..

I dont think you should've renewed your domain contract because this community makes it too easy to make maps nowadays.
You are putting out other map making websites because this one is superior and people like superiority over crap.
Oh, also this community has personality, each and every member is known by each other, it should be more formal, less friendly like the other map making sites. OMG

On the other hand, THE ARCADE SUCKS !

*sigh*... I'm sorry, but did you read anything I was saying? (I don't mean to release SCU, I mean) Yeah, I agree, the release of SCU was a bad idea.

However, I said that you should consider making another map format purely to share map secrets "hands-on". The program should have the same interface as StarEdit, the only thing that's changed is the map format. I also said that you should make a converter that converts maps from the current format to the "new" format. Finally, this is the part you might have thought otherwise about:

I said that the program should be able to convert protected maps to the new format.
You might disagree on this, but think about it: I also said that there should be no "deconverter" that converts maps back to the normal StarEdit-compatible maps. Therefore, even the unprotected+converted maps that used to be protected are safe and would be forever.

So, the only part of my post that encouraged protection was the SCU part. And yes, it was highly controversial.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by (U)Bolt_Head on 2004-06-01 at 20:02:33
Starcraft wouldn't accept another map format. It would basicly just be another form of protection. (something in the protection that triggers the editor to allow it to be opened but not allowed to save) And it would only work in the one editor that made the protection.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by evolipel on 2004-06-01 at 22:01:50
...precisely

My idea was for another map format in order to share map making techniques only, not to make it be playable in StarCraft. Yes, I intended this new map format to work in only the new map editor associated with the new map fomat.

It's not protection. Read my post over again if you still don't understand now.
