Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> Custom Unit Portraits?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by The_Dead_One on 2006-01-31 at 22:07:20
I've heard from multiple sources that it's possible to have custom unit portraits in a UMS w/o modding SC. Now, I don't really see how that could work, but I want to be sure.

Anyone know anything about this?

Portraits Just require looking at the options in the breifings.

smasher25, I think by 'unit portrait' he means changing what portrait you see in the game when you click on units.

It's not really possible. If you want to see a particular portrait for a some time, make a transmission from that unit; but there's no practical way of changing what unit portrait is associated with each unit.

I believe that the unit portrait of buildings is changed in one of the campaign scenarios, though - to my knowledge, that's hard-coded into starcraft and cannot be done using a custom made map.

well all the campains on sc are made from the regular map editor...and i think he is talking about the mission breif portriats and those can be changed

Son)-- All the maps for campaign are indeed made with the origional editor, BUT blizzard also added hardcoded aspects, like the different portraits for buildings. And I really doubt he would be asking about something as simple as portraits in the briefing, so it seems most likely that he is indeed asking about changing portraits ingame.

If you're doing an RPG just use the talking portrate action and make it preserve trigger.

smasher25, Son), you are not getting what he is asking. He is talking about custom unit portraits that means you are getting different portraits for units than what you would actually get. Any noob can change portraits in mission breifings!

As for the question, I know this is strictly impossible without modding

To confirm:
I was talking about during a game. Not a stupid mission brief.

I assumed that such a trigger would be possible, so long as you used portraits already coded into SC, like put a marine portrait onto a zergling, not necessarily something new.

Basically, the evidence I have supporting the theoretical possibility (aside form the rumors) is as follows:

1: EUD (I think that's it.) Conditions could be used (to my knowledge) to detect the player's selection of a certain unit. Then, the action would be to run the display portrait action.

2: It is possible to play a .wav that was encoded into stardat.mpq (such as a speech by Duran to the player in BW Terran 1) without uploading it to the map. Using a similar procedure, is it be possible to extract a unit's portrait from the game itself during a game?

3: The player colours beyond 017 have different effects on unit portraits. Most notable is the flag. The flag's colour changes depending on the owner's colour in the game. A flag owned by someone who's color is 001 will be blue, 002 = teal, etc. however, numbers beyond 17 either crash SC or showup with an alternate image. For example, 024 results in the portrait being of the Terran Sarah Kerrigan. 240 results in a goliath. (For some reason 240 can crash you too. It seems random.) And there's also some colours that result in static.

Basically, these are some as-of-yet unanswered (to me, anyway) questions revolving around the plausibility of messing with unit portraits.

Maybe we should get DeathKnight to look into it so that there'll be a new patch?[/sarcasm]

1)Not funny sarcasm.
2)Impossible since it is not stored in the RAM that EUD could have loaded(even if it could have its patched so w/e),
3)The flags are like that because when this game came out the way this game was coded was new and unperfected therfor they did a horrible job(why the hackers have a field day on this game).
4)The wav loading is a sound and is loaded from a seperate file and are accessed freely. The portraits are hardcoded. So no there is no possiblility.
