Staredit Network -> Website Feedback, Bugs & Discussion -> An Honest Opinion
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2006-02-01 at 17:20:15
I am writing this for the public so that it may hear my opinion. Rather, it is not just my opinion, but a common opinion accepted and felt by many.

The quality and grandeur of StarEdit Network has greatly declined since it became a mainstream site. It is rife with technical difficulties, but the true problem lays with the influx of newcomers. It has lost much of the sense of community that it once had, and the level of immaturity has become mind-boggling. No longer is it fun to hold a debate in Serious Discussion, nor is it entertaining to talk about anything light-hearted. Indeed, even the roots of SEN have become corrupt, with "members" left and right presenting what they think about maps without saying why. Every post I make is made now with a wearied resignation that there will be flaming.

If moderators close this or delete this, then rest assured that there is no hope.

So, with this... What do you propose should happen?

Took the words from my mouth.

I see it as "beating a dead horse." But, there has to be something we can do. Whether it be hire more Staff, or maybe "Prune" members. I honestly have no idea.

Become a more "strict" community?

I agree... although i am a noobish user who likes to say "this map is good" with out giving a reason... What is so ironic about this was that Kellimus said this in his avatar description before he was banned...

I have nothing against you, but as soon as Syphon joined the site with his posting every two minutes with uncarefully thought posts, instead of ones with real meaning, just to become regulars and gain mins, all the newbies coming in trying to attention and respect from the moderators and senior members is probably the most immature thing that the new people are doing.

I hope you're not hinting that saying that SEN is no longer a little community will end up with you being banned.
So SEN has went mainstream and you don't know every single member there is? So what? You should be happy SEN is as big of a place it is, and is encouraging people to be friendly. Obviously when you're on the internet fourm of a competetive game there will be conflicts and your aholes. But seriously, everyone complaining (Or repeating) that SEN has changed:
DOESN'T DO ANYTHING
If anything you guys make the site worse, if you spent less time noting what's already known and more time trying to create the community you want to much then maybe SEN would be a better place. Or we have something called a "Generation change" which is basically what SEN is going through. Basically there's a batch of people who've known the site for around a year and people who, well haven't. The problem is that all the old members like the friends they made when they were here and don't even try to say hi to the new generation. Which ends up the new generation thinking that all the old memebrs are aholes and make more current generation friends. Seperating the community more.

Or at least, that's what I think.

I believe SeN started going down a month before the All-unmighty YaeXirillion joined.

Most sites start going down after it's reached it's peak.

Just like the cyclical nature of our country's economy. Once it starts booming, it begins going down.

Only thing is, we dunno if it'll ever prosper again.

i totally agree with you. on some topics when you post your opinion you get flamed and called stupid. i think that the moderators should be stricter on the whole flaming thing.

But flaming is different things to different people. It's sometimes also hard to tell when a subtle flame is happening.

I hear this over and over yet don't hear one feasible suggestion as a solution. Do you honestly think the quality downfall is something I never notice? I damn well know the problem, but I don't know how to fix it.

you and the rest of sen.

There is no possible solution, you'd have to be a genius(literally) to figure out how to fix a economic problem.

It's been going down since august 28th, since school started for me. The slope inceased, being steeper, when Michael (Yoshi) left in ~october.

But yeah, we heard this "speech" enough...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Centreri on 2006-02-01 at 19:14:36
True, but it is quite obvious. The quality has been going down.

I think the only solution to solve this found at the moment is to become more strict and possibly prune members. Other then that, we can put more emphasis on proper grammar (personal opinion; not sure it would help).

From what I heard, Kellimus reached 100% two times before finally getting banned; I would have thought one time would be enough (just in case it was true wink.gif ).

We could also try to make staff feelings on certain 'spamming' and 'flaming' members more known; I'm quite sure administrators didn't approve of YaeXilliron, for example, and if it had been widely known that they didn't approve of him before he was banned less examples would have been set, etc. As long as staff doesn't make 'personal' feelings well known, of course (or not very acutely).

One last thing that we could do is to prevent people without at least 10 posts or so to post in some more serious forums, such as, of course, serious discussion.

I can't think of what else could help, and of course I'm not sure these would.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by M_s4 on 2006-02-01 at 19:21:06
Yes, YaeXrillion was one of the original pioneers of the "immaturity movement" With his Yes/No polls with 10 outlandish, attempt to be funny, answers. Even though, I was here since '04, I'm not like 16 or anything so I will be watching SEN for the next few years to see if it clears up.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Voyager7456(MM) on 2006-02-01 at 19:30:27
I agree Golden-Fist, the mistrust of the new generation and the hostility of the old generation definitely contributes to the problem.

Community Review Committee; a colaboration of old and new members who discuss problems out. I think that a much more isolated enivornment more will get accomplished. At least this way we could cut down on the amount of miscommunication around here, at the very least. Or have community updates posted here monthly, and if there's a problem with how something's happening that makes it 'mainstream' people will jump on it immidiately, instead of speaking against something after its already integrated.

ADDITION:
I forgot something: if they don't say something, its their own damn problem they let it happen. tongue.gif

I'm not a very old member, but I agree with whoever said it's the combination of new members spamming and old members complaining. It's like listening to grandpa tell me how he had to walk 15 miles in the snow barefoot. I'm sorry the good days are gone, but you don't have to try and make us feel guilty for not being there.

What kills a topic is when someone corrects someone's grammar, if you understand what they mean, ignore it, if its so bad that you can't determine what they're trying to say, THEN mention something, but try not to be too harsh.

I already messaged you the solution.

Kame's idea will work. So will keeping members aware that if they do not follow the rules that they will be punished. Remember Yoshi "unjustfully" banning somewhat new users? Do more of that. wink.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2006-02-01 at 19:59:11
That's the problem right there with older members. They expect new users to come here with a full knowledge of the rules. Why not link them to the rules for their first offense? Some of the old age members forget that they were once new to the site.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by HorroR on 2006-02-01 at 20:00:25
Ah yes, when I first joined. When the Arcade was still up, and Yoshi was still around. Those were the best damned days of SeN I ever had.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Infested-Jerk on 2006-02-01 at 20:06:23
and when a webiste is new, banning every member who comes along is a bad practice.

I've kept a 0% warn for the whole time i've been on SEN. It's not hard, although I have to say that the temptation to flame is strong on this board. Some people (Ihattet comes to mind) are just idiots who should have been banned long before they were. Ihattet was a member for quite awhile, and he should have known the rules.

New members need to learn faster
older members need to be a little more forgiving

and both sides need to realize if we keep bickering back and forth, SEN might die.

Oh, who said SEN has hit it's peak?

THERE'S NO WAY IT COULD REACH IT'S PEAK WITHOUT ME! angel_not.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Zombie on 2006-02-01 at 20:44:13
Here is a solution only i can think of.

This site was once a fun place, But with FLAMERS in every single post you can have much fun now can you? I think the moderators are corrupted. No one suspificly. Like the kelli situation, He was banned and the entire community flips out. Its really stupid. Or the Censors? the game cusses more than we can, When a site is based on a game it shouldn't have every single little word censored. I mean i can see some words like the F and B and N. But that should be like all. People also take things to seriously, I see some rates like a signature and the person who got rated goes
QUOTE
Wtf noob, you are a piece of shiz. Go learn to make some sigs before you give ratings for no god damn farking reason.
. People need to learn to take things as they are and accept things. Also the moderators should POST when they take a action against a member! When they warn some one there person should get a pm and in the topic the mod should post why he did it. (innless its clearly obvious...) Unactive member accounts should be delated, Whats the point in having them? You shouldn't get a 20% warn level also, I mean if you accidently mess up and upload a to big signature and you get a warn level your acually a quarter of a way from getting banned. 20-40-80-100. Strictness should be applied a little more but not to much. (Doesn't make much sense, sorry tongue.gif) Also there is something else, Maturity. The maturity of the members in general have decreased by 40% If some one flames you or someone else? Don't flame back, Report them. But thats impossible to fix, Its up to the members.

Whew... I Don't i have ever written this much tongue.gif.
