Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> Strange effect?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by A_of_s_t on 2006-02-09 at 00:47:09
Ok, I want this cool special effect, I'm not sure if it can be done though.

I have a map and in the map is a long passage with patroling ebemy units in it. I want the human player to see everything in the passage EXCEPT what the enemy units see, but when the human player brings his unit close to the fog of war, he CAN see the unit. What are the triggers nessicary for this?

You could have several locations going along this corridor with a map revealer in each one. When the enemy unit enters the location, you could kill that location's map revealer and replace it when the enemy leaves.

There will be 1 little snag with doing it that way; you will know where the units are.

If there is a black spot you can't see, there's an enemy there. People will figure that out.

Maybe you could make locations around each of the units, and make it so they turn invisble if there is noone else in that location, but if they are, they turn visible. So if you walk up to it you can see it otherwise it is cloaked. I think you can use disable doodad state or something, Don't do that with SCVs though..

ADDITION:
No actually 2 snags, cause when the map revealers go away you wont' be able to see that part of the terrain anymore.

He's right doodan.

Of the things I can whine to Blizzard about Starcraft, map revealers are one of them. You can't move, kill/remove at location, or give them with triggers, you can't control their elevation properties, and you can't do squat to adjust their width.

I thought of something, if I make the units (infested terran and some lings) invisble with Azu's idea, they freeze in their spot, which SUCKS cuz i need them moving around... And I do want the human to know where they are because in real life they can see through the whole passageway, but the infested and lings are a creature that ABSORBS light (ull get it when i make the map)... i guess my origanal idea is too hard to do...

Well there is a game called cloaked zergling blood where the zerglings are made cloaked using a trigger and they move around while cloaked

I thought that was using the set doodad state thingy

And the zerglings arn't frozen

So if you could figure out how to do it like that it should work fine

Just have it do that whenever there is nobody near by (player 1 brings at most 0 any unit to location "Location around unit")

And when there is somebody nearby, have it turn visable again..

Oh and sence they will be using preserve triggers and hyper triggers, you might wanna put a few wait for 60 ms waits in the triggers, to prevent them being spammed over and over and making lag & glitches & stuff

I think it needs a player 14 scarab(this unit and player are quite buggy) and a zergling on it and alot of disable enable move triggers, i don'T remember well but what i remember is that if you see that thing happening you will crash so if it's not your ling it's alright and you must have no vision at the place where it's happening have figuring this out

Ummm... can someone put the triggers, I'm new to 'advanced' triggering... I need the trigger for that p14 scarab cuz I did NOT understand what u meant(i get that p14 helps with speed and stuff, but I dont get the rest) and exactly what to do do make the zergling cloaked(not doodade disabled? right?)

ADDITION:
This is what I have so far...

Im am going to have hyper triggers.

Trigger
Description:
P14's Scarab magic
Players:
¤ P6
Conditions:
¤ Always
¤ Switch '***PassageWay0001' is set
Actions:
¤ Create 1 Scarab* for P14 at '***PassageWayL0002'
¤ Wait 60ms
¤ Preserve Trigger

Trigger
Description:
P6's Cloaking
Players:

Trigger
Description:
P6's Cloaking
Players:
¤ P6
Conditions:
¤ P6 brings '1' 'Infested Terran' to '***PassageWayL0002'
¤ Switch '***PassageWayI0001' is cleared
Actions:
¤ ???Set Unit Properies??? Set 'Infested Terran' to 'properties' (making it cloaked???)

Why not try this what Doodan suggested:
Make some units(like map revealers) as lamps or so on where you can see everything.
Then center a location around every enemy and switch off all lamps at that region.
This could easily be done by giving the lamps to other players

well.... I dont know what is the coolest way i want the effect, IT HAS TO BE SCARY!!! Im going to blind the human's unit so he cans see far but still... it would be cool seeing a moving fog of war...

ADDITION:
O and if anyone can answer this so i dont have to make a forum:

How do I make a unit MISS the target he is aiming at??? (I know the unit can miss if he is behind terrain and so on, but can i make him just miss even if he is at point blank range?)
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Azu on 2006-02-10 at 00:24:02
No I don't think you can do that..

I think it's just sometimes if there is terrain in the way the terrain blocks it..

1) You cannot create units for players 9+ (meaning you cannot spawn units for player 14).
2) The only way known to cloak recently created Zerglings is the use the Disable Enable Enable method.
http://www.staredit.net/index.php?tutorial=32
3) To make a unit miss, let the unit that is being hit be on a higher elevation, or behind a doodad (such as a tree). This will only let them miss 30% of the time. (70% chance of being hit)

Well, in real life, ur gun MOVES around because u might be scared or something, it would be very realistic to make ur unit MISS an enemy that is running towards u...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Azu on 2006-02-11 at 01:44:20
Yep. Well you can't do that. They only miss if they are behind a wall or doodad obstruction of some sort. Complaining isn't going to do you any good with this you know. By the way, in case you didn't know, Starcraft is not a first person shooter, it's something called an RTS (Real Time Strategy) game.
