We, as humans, have pride. Pride, especially in many countries, can hinder the potential power of the nation by over working of nationalism. As you very well know, one of the strongest, and most absurd pride there is is the American pride.

If you are American, you are born with this idea that you can do everything with the power of all powerful being and become very show-offish. Well, not all Americans, but most natural Americans have this pride that seems to offend about every other people on earth.

What do you think about this?
Can overexaggerated nationalism like this benefit the society?

I find most eastern asian pride more absurd than American pride. Yes, pride is very good, just as long as it doesn't affect your ego.

Jingoism and zealotry. I hate it. Hate it, hate it, hate it.

I think these Choking Victim lyrics will sum up my view nicely:
QUOTE
From "Born to Die"

Born to die
and you get
to sit and watch your TV set
Believe the lies
before your eyes
Credit cards and apple pies
50 stars to blind your eyes
13 stripes to hypnotize
Free thought is gone
You'll never see
you're just a pawn

Essentially, it's just rallying around some vague idea that because we're America, we can do as we please. It's the American way!

No way in hell that's a benefit.

there's a fine fine line between ego and pride (at least to my interpretation.) What you posted Arbitrary seems more influenced by ego and ignorance than pride.

i dont think it really matters. usually if you have too much pride it screws you in the end.

my motto, moderation. keep as much pride as possible but keep it in check and moderate it.

American's only pride is the thought of the American Dream.

The "can-do" additude, the "if you work hard enough you will succed" motto. The thought that this trait you can only find in America. "American Made"

I think pride and being a patriot is fine, extreme nationalism is not ok.

Pride/Patriotism, ok.

Nationalism, not ok.

I have not seen much difference between nationalism and patriotism.

And to say the truth, I have never really felt overly patriotic towards our country.
To freely conform to a symbol and what that symbol stands for takes away the identity of self. I would prefer to not be held to any bearings of nationality and be able to wander freely. Nowadays being nationalistic is like taking sides on an issue; if you are patriotic, you follow your country, if you are unpartiotic you are against your country. If everyone was patriotic to their nation, the nation could do whatever it wanted until those people were not patriotic. Patriotism gives government power. I do not like to see any desicion making identity become too powerful, as the more power is held by a decicion making entity, the more damage that entity tends to do. Likewise, being unpatriotic makes things overall less stable. I doubt those who chose sides like it, but there must always be a balance between the two.

I'm Asian-America. I live in the United States of America, and I'm proud of it.

Arbitrary mentioned Jingoism - a mindset which seems to be becoming prevalent in some areas of the USA at the moment. It worries me.

Being proud of your country is not a bad thing; being ignorant and proud is a bad thing.

You shouldn't be ashamed to live in a country because it has a figurehead you do not like. The president, although seemingly he does, does not make all the decisions in the US.

I would be even happier to live in this country if Garfield was president!

Right. I'd rather live here in the USA than anywhere else (canada might be another possible country to live in, but i don't like the environment there. Too cold sad.gif)

One nice thing about Canada is that Canadian girls look really nice, but I still wouldn't consider canada as one of my top favorite places to live. Mainly because I like warmer weather and I play Tennis alot.

Texas is fine for me, especially the areas I live/go to. Although if I could live anywhere I wanted to and not worry about money or anything, I would pick somewhere along/near the coasts, like California or Florida.

If I'd pick somewhere other than the US, I'd pick UK.

Yea, but all that British Accent will drive me nuts crazy.gif

jk it wont. Britain would actually be a nice place to go. But usually countries like this would be almost all white, unlike North America. I probably won't feel right in a European country since I am Asian. I am one of those types of people who likes to hang around with other asian people smile.gif

Patriotism is not blindly following your country. It is loving your country. Im a patriot, I love my country, but I dissagree with some of the choices made by our government.

Mmmm UK people are gross dude, haaha they have bad teeth and the percentage of attractive people(women in my case) is like a million to one. There ain't many. I would find it hard to live in a place with no eye candy smile.gif or a place where my "Captian" gets no pleasure. That may sound shallow, but soon you will come to your senses w00t.gif they all do biggrin.gif

This is getting off topic, so i am going to bring it out again in different words. What do you think about American pride? Look at those white guys marching down the street as if he own everything. Is that good or bad? Is American pride a good pride or a bad pride?
