I'm going to narrow it down into a couple categories:
PRESENTATION
- polygon amount (Doom 3 monsters, etc.)
- creative style (FF games, etc.)
- composed music (FF games, etc.)
PLOT
- complexity (Metal Gear Solid, etc.)
- originality (Killer 7, etc.)
- credibility (if it is somewhat realistic: Shenmue, Grand Theft Auto, etc.)
GAMEPLAY
- balance (Starcraft, etc.)
- originality (Katamari Damacy, etc.)
- AI (F.E.A.R, Half-Life, etc.)
Suggest me some categories you feel should be added here!
Anyway, I want to know what you buy games for.
For me, it's mostly a mix of plot and gameplay. I like a plot that makes you think because it's thick, it's original, meaning it's not another one of those "SAVE THE WORLD" types and if it doesn't rely too much on fantasy so I can believe it.
I like a balanced game, and I do like games that try to do something new like Katamari Damacy with the ball. AI is also needed if you are going against bots most the time.
For presentation, there are some games that do have lots of specs like polygons, high def, but I have to give credit to those hard-working people who draw 23434 types of creative monsters such as in RPGs. Music is also something that requires skill to do, so great tunes like Mario or Zelda make gaming more pleasant.
Same with you, I like Plot/Gameplay more. I'd like a good game that has an original style of gameplay, and has an interesting story, not a game that used the same style as another game, and has no balance (ie; you get killed in 2 hits by one of the weakest enemies in the game..with full health), and the story is very bland and obviously is a ripoff of another creative video game/book/movie plot line
Graphics aren't a big winner for me. There is a certain point they should meet, but you won't see me buy an Xbox for lighting effects in a sports game. I like a big mix of things. I like big plots, because it normally makes me love the game more, and if you have a great story it will make some gamers get over the decent gameplay or even bad gameplay.
I haven't really seen any games where gameplay is the biggest point, there's always a mix of things, I guess I like plot the most. Games like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy X, and others normally make me replay the game more. But games like Prince of Persia and GTA also make me replay it because of how much fun they are to play. It sort of depends what mood I'm in.
Graphics, AI, Balance, Complexity, Originality in that order.
Music isn't too great, but if it's good then I'll take it

.
Top Five: Balance, AI, Originality, Music, Graphics.
Past that, it's all pretty much equal.
I'm a nut for great AI. If there's a game where the AI can beat me without having hidden advantages (like the SC AI actually has slightly faster build times), thne I'll love the game to death. If they have to outnumber, outpower, or just plain cheat to beat me, the game sucks.
That is why I MUST GET OBLIVION. I've always invisioned a game where you can actually follow people through their lives, and kill them at any point along the way. Oblivion's AI is supreme to anything I've ever seen before, and I simply must see if this is the AI I have been dreaming of. (Although there is a gut feeling I have that I will be disapointed, and all the tech demoes were prescripted severely)
PS. Shooter games where the AI just autoaims right on your head doesn't count as good AI...

Damn, guess that discounts Counter-Strike. Or rather, in Counter-Strike the players
download an AI that auto-aims right on others' heads
for them.
Actually, Counter-Strikes AI is one of the better ones I've seen. Put them on hard, not expert, and they don't auto-aim on your head. Honestly, it's the first shooter game I can't tell bots from people.
I once went into an almost all bot game and told a guy to stop being cheap and AWPing...
One of the human players said 'dood hes a bot'...
PRESENTATION- polygon amount (I dont really understand that so I'm not answering that one =\)
- creative style (For creative I'd pick Grandia III)
- composed music (I'd have to say Grandia III again, dude the opening song was like something you'd hear on a radio)
PLOT- complexity (Romance of the Three Kingdoms 9)
- originality (Paper Mario)
- credibility (Call of Duty 2)
GAMEPLAY- balance (Starcraft, need I say more?)
- originality (Final Fantasy 7)
- AI (Whats AI?)
My answers are all in brackets

If I were to go overall for
PRESENTATION-It would go to Final Fantasy 10
PLOT-Final Fantasy 7
GAMEPLAY-Star Ocean: Till the end of Time
Graphics are byyyy far the thing i DONT look for in a game.
I prefer sunset riders and like super contra over half the games that come out nowadays
Graphics are a bonus to me. I'm all in it for the story.
I like the gameplay. Story is nice, but I don't really need it. I don't want a half-movie half-game type thing where I've gotta play this character, I've gotta take this action, I've gotta do this gotta do that.
Which reminds me why I hate so many RPGs. I like the more open ones, or at least create a character.
Gameplay is my foremost to the extent, but when that's not that great, it NEEDS a story.
ie: Bad Dudes for the NES: storyline (this is seriously revealed to you in the game, SLOW AS fark AND ONE LETTER AT A TIME by some dude with a flat top blonde hair talking to you)
"T H E - P R E S I D E N T - H A S - B E E N - K I D N A P P E D - B Y - N I N J A S .
A R E - Y O U - A - B A D - E N O U G H - D U D E
T O - R E S C U E - T H E - P R E S I D E N T?"
And the gameplay is pretty bad, graphics pretty bad. But this isn't a game review, just an example.
If the gameplay rox, i can stand something like "save the princess. (again)"
Graphics are deinfately a plus. Music...Music is also awesome. Anyone here ever play total annihilation? Best video game music I've ever heard. Arena wars wasn't bad either (music wise...the whole game is like a bad version of team micro arena with a CTF mode)
But my demanded order would be:
Gameplay, Originality (it might play good but i dont need another farking ww2 shooter), control scheme, graphics
I would say, The plot and gameplay. For me i would need both to have a really fun game. Like Final fantacy or battle front, along those lines. (halflife) etc..
Storyline complexity.
Icewind Dale and Deus Ex Invisible Wars have both of these XD
(I really love these games, especially Deus Ex, you have so many different story line choices you can choose from. And the plot is awesome, good forshadowing too XD.)
