Hi folks,

I'm a Starcraft fan dating back to its release. I went through a couple years of addiction that resulted in missed classes and getting into work late multiple times. I joined a clan and had well over 3000 games under my belt before I was finished. I never got really good, but I had a ton of fun. No game has matched Starcraft in usability, playability, balance and sheer fun.

I have to admit, I've joined the forums for a single selfish purpose. I have a retro-LAN party this weekend with 10 of my old LAN buddies and Starcraft is going to be the main theme. I'm having a 1v1 ladder (even bought some Starcraft figures for prizes) and want everyone to be able to spectate each map.

So, now I have to become a mapping expert tonight and figure out how I can create a version of the Hunters map that only has 2 open slots and 6 spectator slots. I walked through Staredit and was having trouble figuring out how to do that. This appears to be the best resource for mapping that I've found. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Thanks so much!

ADDITION:
So, I think I found the right direction. I'll test this with some friends tonight, but this is what I've done:

1) Save 'The Hunters' as 'The Hunters Custom'
2) Create two forces 'Competitors' and 'Spectators'
3) Move players 3-8 to Spectators.
4) Set standard triggers for just Competitors (starting with 50 ore, win after enemy has zero buildings, loose if self has zero buildings).
5) Create sole ALWAYS trigger for Spectators to remove all buildings.
6) Create new trigger for Competitors to ally with Spectators.

I'd be interested to know if you guys think I'm on the right path here... Thanks!

1) Well recalling the map was a good start to not mix them up tongue.gif
2) If the competitors are on 1 force they will be allied, make 2 forces, 1 for each competitor wink.gif
3) Right
4) Excellent
5)* In custom maps if you don't place any buildings/units then the player has none, so this trigger is useless. Same goes to competitors, you will have to preplace CC/hatchery/Nexus and workers, that disables the race selection though sad.gif
6) Making them allied with competitors won't make them see them. You either need an advanced editor to make vision triggers or they will have to put vision on manually.

Anyway good luck biggrin.gif

*edit: I might be wrong with 5) because I have never made melee UMS maps, anyway I believe it should work without preplacing buildings.

Thanks for the help, DEAD!

I removed all triggers for the spectators and used Scmdraft 2.0 to easily add map revealers to the whole map for the spectators. I also removed the fog of war for them. So as long as two human competitors are in the game, anyone in spectators slots will start with no units, be allied together and the game will not end for them until somebody in the competitors group wins. The competitors force does not have it set for them to ally up automatically, so it appears that I don't have to put them in separate forces.

Only one thing I need to figure out and that is how to get both forces to use all of the map start points randomly. Right now, the competitors will always be in start location 1 and 2 (allthough random between those two per game).

Almost there!

Not sure is it possible. wacko.gif

Maybe use a trigger to randomize position of nexus/hatchery/command center, but that will probably prevent the 'choosing of race in menu' thing to work and you'll have to set it using triggers. Or you can randomize start locations in forces menu.

Anyway, welcome to SEN.

I'm pretty sure you can set it to random start locations.

Make sure when you're testing the map that you run it under Use Map Settings.

I expect there are tournament versions of The Hunters out there already made with spectator slots, but if you've started then you may as well finish!

Ya, the first thing I looked for were maps with tournament slots, but I had trouble finding them. I even remember playing on a Lost Temple and Hunters map with spectator slots a long time ago. If anyone has them or knows where to get them, I'd be all over that.

You can set random start locations for forces in Staredit and all of the other editors, but it appears they only have random spots within their player set. I haven't seen an option to allow both forces to share the same pool of random spots in UMS.

This is a bit tough because I'm using an established map - but I'm so close it hurts! tongue.gif

They don't need to be in separate forces, just uncheck the "Allied" box and check the "Random start locations" box. smile.gif

Hey Rex - I will try that. I guess instead of assigning triggers to two forces, I could assign the triggers to individual players and keep them in the same force so they share the same random pool of start points. I was just hoping to have two sets of slots when people joined the game. smile.gif

Thanks for the welcoming everyone. I'm going to continue to try and make this tournament map even though the LAN party has passed. (We skipped the tournament anyways because we were having too much fun with large games).

Its great to see so many people still dedicated and excited about Starcraft. I still can't get over the game. I've put up a small website about the LAN we just had if yall want to check it out.
