I'm a highly experienced map creator.
However, my last map that I brought out was an RPG called "The BlueWire Project", which did not include any UPGRADES.
I tried so hard to make the game completely original, great storyline, high-tech triggers, beautiful presentation and animating text, and yet I still had some complaints that there were no UPGRADES!
The gameplay is tactical and fun, but do I really need upgrades to make my fans happy?

In my opinion no, no1 is ever perfectly happy with any map. Just 1 thing that wasn't to someone's liking is all, and this is in the wrong thread really.

No, you don't need upgrades for any map.

In RPGs, most players do expect their characters to improve. I mean, if you replace the upgrades with virtual stats and such, they should understand it, but otherwise, the audience won't like RPGs without better stats later in the game.
My opinion is that you should add upgrades or some type of inhancement like a sidekick and you get another unit or something that way you grow while you play!
Like after killing a number of units you get an upgrade of a zergling just to add a little bonus!
*shrug* I like the idea of not upgrading...it should place more emphasis on the actual skill of the player.
Then again, my maps are not about to win any popularity contests...
If you don't have upgrades, you need to do something different to make sure the game does not get boring and repetitive. It's just an added challenge in making the map by omitting them, if you ask me...
But you of course do not NEED them for the RPG to be good... just make sure it does not get too boring if nothing changes.
Some of the best RPGs dont have upgrades. IMO if you can get away with no upgrades the map ends up being better.
That may be true, but how boring could it be if ou are playing a game, say for about 30 minutes or more and you still have one marine that has no upgrades or anything. Maybe after a while get a different type of unit. Maybe like upgrade from a marine to a ghost or from a ling to a hydra or hydra to a lurker!!!!!! Or whatever goes along with your map. I think that upgrades are a huge part of the game and you may need to add them!!!
Upgrades or no Upgrades, doesnt matter if your map has it or not. If it plays well with no ups then leave it has it is. Its all up to you.
RPG must have upgrades otherwise it is called an adventure. Like Zelda(adventure) that would be a map with no upgrades just skill and maybe some cool weapons you find and do not earn by killing. Otherwise you have to level up(gain experience even though I think dynamic experience is much better than static but is still unused today). In an RPG you learn mastery over a weapon and such. Therfor adventure=look around RPG=gain skill(upgrades in terms of sc). You could have an RPG/Adventure but that would require both parts.
if u want to hear my opinion too, lol
NO, a good rpg isnt a map that you only need to spreeb to get better, look at special forces its the most booring map in the world and it only countains upgrades
a good rpg have a shop with special and unique potions and items and "blablabla"
