Staredit Network -> Games -> Elder Scroll: Oblivion Review
Report, edit, etc...Posted by RedNara on 2006-03-22 at 13:44:14
This is more like a first impression review because I am not really into the game as much only 6 hours of game-play, and that actually is good enough for a review.

Ok you start off by creating your character. I thought this feature was awesome you had about 8 different races to choose from and you can choose from there skin color to how big there nose are. I must say it is not the best graphic you have ever seen, but then again peoples face always looked little ugly in games. Also if you manage to make a well looking face it looks pretty nice.
Once you character is created you start in a cave/sewer battling rats, and goblins finding your way out of the sewer. In the middle of the sewer you have the ability to choose your class, birthsign, specialization and attributes. It really makes your character unique from here on. Also you can create your own class by combining the attributes and skills you want which gives you a unique character.
In the cave its little dark and hard to make out things, however, you do have a option to hold a torch which helps you a lot. And for me as a mage my flare attack gives me light also biggrin.gif not really. Once out of the sewer/cave you come into this bright foresty place by a river, I thought the graphics were awesome. However, if you ever decide to take a swim the graphics gets little messed up would I say but its fine you hardly ever take a swim in the lake.
The fighting system is great. At first I thought first person view my god that would suck. However, while I was playing I found it really interesting and a whole new different gameplay. But that may be because third person view I would say is not playable, unless you want to look at your character from the back...
I liked how the NPC reacted, they seemed pretty realistic to me. For example I knew this person and she was really nice to be before, but later in the game I accidentally stole her horse, and if I would go near her she would follow me trying to beat me. However, later guards come and I would have to fight them or go to jail or pay them for how much I owe them. Obviously, I didn’t save my game and decided to fight the guard think I can tuff it out eh. Well this time I killed a guard using up all my potions; however, suddenly from nowhere another guard comes up and kills with just one strike. Now I finally realized my mistake and loaded the game again. I decided to go to jail because the thing I stole was a horse which made my fine 600 gold.
Yea the crime/punishment system is real tuff. Even when you enter a house and look at a item it says steal with a red hand over it, which makes it easy for you to take stuff unknowingly. Also you should save a lot. At one point I was in a role and didn’t save; however, I was stupid enough to not save right before that boss fight. I killed the boss but suddenly a little guy came along from my back and hit me a few times and I died… odd isn’t it.
The game is a great game and it defiantly worth your money.

Graphics(9.5):I found the graphic really amazing the landscape and the first person view of figthing. I mean its not the best looking game on the xbox 360 but looking at how big the world is its amazing.

Sound(9.0):The sounds are outstanding. It has a lot of LOTR style songs which really puts you in the mood. The voice is awsome but the characters lip synching aint perfect but its really good.

Gamplay(9.5):The game play is awsome. So much quest you can do, the world is so big and i like the fast travel option it def worth it. The only thing i would say is the 3rd person does look so good so it only makes you play 1st person view.

Lasting Appeal(9.5):To beat this game will take a long time. The guilds and everything first off some of the guilds are hard to join and actually adventuring the world will take hundreds of hours. This game will last a long time.

Overall: Great game you should buy it if you have the chance.

9.4 (Round up lol)

It was a pretty long install, but as of now I have 512 MB RAM which hardly let's you play the game. I'm awating more RAM in the mail, but shipping is so damn slow sometimes. What I did play of it was the intro, and character creation. Even though it was excessively choppy (due to my lack of active memory, not the game's fault) I had a great time making a character. Amazingly, you can pretty much make your character look very very similar to yourself if you use an Imperial. Graphics are outstanding, and I'm using a low-end card. At least 10x better than morrowind on a low-end card. I read the manual last night too. SO many upgrades and fixes upon morrowind's system. The economy is NOT so screwed up anymore. You will not have a daedric long sword within an hour of game play. In fact I doubt you'll have one in 10 hours. Shops will generally have less than 500g on hand (unless you get your mechantile skill up to expert level). Something I thought sounded pretty funny is if you master your acrobat skill you can jump off the surface of water. You don't need to steal houses from people anymore, you can buy one and furnish it AND use your furnishings, for instance, sitting in a chair.

So I agree with BoyScout.. buy it if you can! If you're gonna buy the PC version, make sure your computer can support it before you pay. It's a tough game to support.

9.5 for me.

The thieves guild, uh you can join it by Going to jail. But don’t do this a lot because you lose skills. The way I joined it I went to jail once and one day I just went to the jail to hang out and someone came up to me and gave me a letter. Someone else said you can bribe a hobo up to 70 gold and he tells you were the thieves guilds meet. Also when doing the thieves guild first quest talk to hobos always talk to hobos if your lost… that’s only for the first quest though.

If it's anything like Morrowind, then you should steal a lot of stuff from homes and then eventually a representative will approach you and ask you to join.

Lucky me i got the 360, yes indeed this game is awesome i especially considering the battle system and uhh...3rd person isnt really unplayable there are several rpgs like that though you can look in different directions most people dont (fable, kingdom hearts, etc) its just more annoying, but im the kind of guy who really cant stand first person style. The game is indeed worth the money and even the money of buying a 360 or computer
