You don't have to make an avatar. You just need a picture that is in the formats explained above the upload. I think they are .jpeg, .jpg, .bmp, .png. 150x150 and less than 50kb.

Go to My controls in the top right corner of the screen. If you can't find it, hold CTRL and press F, type in My Controls, and click that.
Then go to Avatar Settings.
