Geyser Rush by: Exploit
Topic: StarCraft Strategies
Description: This is a rare risky strategy that many people have never thought about. It stops an enemy from teching, while you tech yourself. Geyser Rushes work best on maps with one to two geysers. It would be pointless to use them on maps with more than two geysers.

Send one or two workers to scout an enemy's base. Build a(n) Extractor/Refinery/Assimilator on their geyser(s). Always cancel the building before it is fully built to save the 100 minerals. Then, build it again if your worker won't die. Avoid rushes from non-gas units. Begin teching as soon as your geysers(s) are built in the enemy's base. Don't let your enemy know where you are for rushes. Wait until your enemy nearly kills your geyser before you cancel it, then send it back to your base to save the drones. You may want to prepare for a rush from your enemy because it will be likely. Finally, you may cancel one building and collect gas from the other. Then cancel the second building and send your drones back to your base with the extra gas.

*Step by Step Build Order
-Send 2 drones to scout multiple areas, then choose best target
-Build 4 drone (6/10)
-Build 2 100 mineral geysers (4/10)
-Build 4 drones (8/10)
-Build Spawning Pool (7/10)
-Build 6 zerglings (10/10)
-Build Overlord (10/20)
-Build two extractors for your own base
-Cancel buildings when necessary in enemy's base

*Facts
All geysers take 40 seconds to build, so make sure you cancel them on time.
An scv is 20 hp stronger than probes/drones.

I wouldn't think that it would work so well, since 2-3 marines could kill the refinery and the peon fairly easily... although I don't play melee, so... unsure.gif

You're not the first one to think it up.

It's not happening =\ Not against a pro, anyway. I've done stuff like this, before. Except with bunkers/sunkens. Only in money maps, when I'm fooling around, though.

I wouldn't try this strategy if I actually wanted to win.

Sorry, but have you realised how old this strategy is? I've seen it long long time ago. There is no "credit" to strategy you think of it up and do it, if others copy you then that means they think your strategy is good.

Back to the point, this works best with protoss since you don't have to stay around to build it. This won't work well if you are facing good opponents.

*KaboomHahahein Still remembers when LegacyWeapon did it to me in one melee map :/

There's a big flaw in this strategy, and it is that you yourself will have your own economy lagging behind also. When the enemy will need gas, it's more than likely that he will have several mineral units to kill the peon. You will also loose way too much time trying to cancel and build the extractor.

Also, Zerg are the worst species with which to control your enemy's expansion. You can't build any sunkens unless it's ZvZ. Terran and Protoss can easily build a cannon or bunker behind your geyser or build it next to geyser and minerals.

Halting your economy at such an early and critical stage will only make your enemy much stronger mineral-wise, meaning he will have around 10 marines agaisnt your 6 zerglings.

And why does it have to be specifically for zerg?

And sending 2 drones to scout at the beginning of the game slows your economy by HEAPS. What if you're playing against toss or zerg? With your slow economy that can easily overwhelm you with two gates and zealots or two hatch and spam lings. It's not exactly new either.. I've seen it carried out so many times. I've seen protoss harrassing the terran's gas to avoid him from teching to factory etc.

I'd like to see you carry out this strat on bnet and win (strictly following that build order you gave), I'd be amazed.

I played it on a Hunters map with 1 geyser, and won the first time I played it. Writing a strategy doesn't guarantee it is the best in the world. But thank-you for discussing the negative sides of it.

My friend does that to me alot. Its annoying, but I still manage to win.

3...It is just that we don't really need geysers at the beginning...We can just build them while we fight, so it doesn't really matter.

What the hell? You start your mining with 2 drones? Last time I checked, extractors cost 50, not 100...

anyway... The way you describe it (and nor do i know what you're playing on that has just 2 geysers...bgh maybe?)

and you plan on doing a 6 ling 'rush' after that...

I'm sorry, but so many things are wrong with this it's not funny. Your own economy will be totally screwed. if it's a 2 or 4 player map, I can understand, but why wouldn't you like send your, say, 8th or 9th worker to do it?

It is true, it disables tech for a while, which comes in very handy, but face it: a P player can still totally kill a Z with like 3 zlots if you take his gas early and you started mining with 2 drones and your first force is 6 lings.

That pretty much explains it.

And yeah, it isn't new...your way is sorta different, using 2 drones, but it is a bad idea. Sorry.

I would give it a 1/5. Just cause it has a fun factor to it. If I ever start playing StarCraft again I'll have to BS that way.[/NOTRIGHT]
