Staredit Network -> Concepts -> Just thought of a spell system...

There are 8 units in this game, the ghost, kerrigan, infested kerrigan, duran, infested duran, alexi, wraith, and tom. What I was thinking is that for spell casting, each of these units are designated their own hotkey and their own spell. If you want to cast a spell, you chose one of the ghosts and you uncloak them. When you uncloak them, an enemy unit will kill it which is the conditon used to cast the spell. Good idea?

No. What's the point of hotkeying?

If they die you have to just hotkey them again anway.

Instead of dieing, you can use a borrowed enemy and use borrow detection smile.gif

Or my tank system... Or a dropship/reaver etc.
This spell system just makes it more complicated. And the killing of the unit will make it seem more "unprofessional". In my opinion: not a good idea.

Lots of hotkeys = unneeded confusion

You could have them uncloak, and infested terran attacks them and does 1 dmg. Then you detect the death of the Infested terran. You can keep the hotkeys then.

I like that idea, but I think the dropship is still the best way

No, I don't think it's a good idea.

In addition to the fact that you have to hotkey the units over again every time you cast a spell, another problem is that it takes a second for the unit to come out of cloak. That means every spell you cast will take a second to actually come out.

Plus, it seems like a waste of some perfectly good units.

Unfortunately, there are better methods than the one you described. Keep on thinking though.

Let's say its this way

Your method = 8 hotkeys
Dropship method = 1 hotkey

Your method = 8 spells
Dropship method = 8 spells

Got it?

You won't need all those hotkeys if it's an RPG map anyways. Why not use them? What Demaris said would make sense and work well. Alternatively, you could just right click and if they move at all you activate the spell. Using hotkeys is the fastest method when you get used to it. It's like melee. Hotkeying is much faster than clicking things such as with the Dropship method. 8t7t6v5v is much faster than clicking on each Factory and pressing t or v. If it's possible for players to remember what each spell is assigned to quickly, this could work very well.

Listed them awhile ago with comparisons and such. Might need to open it up in something besides notepad, though (looks like the spacings got messed).

Still sounds useless to me, i would rather make spell drop system or beacon then that.

You could just have a rine or something shoot the units to acitivate a spell, but then you have to center on the rine.

Here's a possible method of selection. It's much like using a factory to make a unit, but you can use upgrades and techlonogy research too. The only real drawback is that you must use minerals or gas to detect when the player researches comething.
