So it's about 12:30 AM and suddenly I get this random IM from someone I never heard of, Sunshinebird55.

It's a link to a battle.net post.
http://www.battle.net/forums/thread.aspx?f...p=1&#post162638

It seems to be a map unprotector. First I consulted Legacy to see if it was clean. I haven't tried it yet, but he says it seems to work.

It seems like this guy wants all maps to be Open Source, interesting idea.

No.

I've always been a firm supporter of map unprotection.

I will explain my position if anybody wants me to.

SEN doesn't support map unprotection... shouldn't we remove the link in his sig?

Well, map protection is GGed. My guess is it that it doesn't look at anything but the map data SC uses and constructs a map from that. Its going to take something very clever to get around this. As of now, gg map protection.

Oh well, there go mappers' intellectual property rights (otherwise known as bragging rights).

There go the days of downloading an unrigged map.

Omfg, wtf is wrong with those people.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by CheeZe on 2006-04-26 at 18:50:49
I support open source programs.. but this is ridiculous.

Is there a way to make it so it's impossible to build a map? Or have a universal test switch since it's easy to make it unreadable in regular staredit.

Can't we get someone to take legal action? Surely such things aren't legal.

No. A Blizzard Rep told me that protection and unprotection of maps are not illegal. If unprotection is illegal then surely protection is illegal as well.

This is insane. It seems to unprotect every form of protection I have.

Looks like our only hope is to keep this as secret as possible (futile, but at least we can try.)

Oh yes, and find the maker's address and get ourselves some shotguns...

Shotguns? katana or daggers and murder him in his sleep!

On the bright side, I finally unprotected my Majesty map.

It took a while for it to break PROEdit, but it was done.

Sounds are gone inside the map though, the program creates a temporary folder with the map's sounds in them.

This should eliminate any doubts to whether or not the program really works.

Yeah, even my protection got busted, and I won't even tell people what I use. tongue.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MillenniumArmy on 2006-04-26 at 22:07:04
As long as this program doesn't fall into the hands of the map riggers/stealers, then I am perfectly fine.

But that's never going to happen.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by CheeZe on 2006-04-26 at 22:35:43
I can assure you that the program will spread.

We'll just need to find an alternative way to lock it. One that will simply be impossible to unlock. tongue.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2006-04-27 at 00:41:41
It's a paradox: you have to make a protected map corrupted enough that an editor can't deal with it and the protection has to be weak enough that Starcraft can parse and play the map.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rantent on 2006-04-27 at 01:23:53
Now we just need some program to place something (possibly extended units or players) that crash editors, but somehow don't crash the game. I doubt anything will really work though.

Should we allow discussion here and encourage people to try to find a solution or should we ban it and be a dictator? tongue.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BeeR_KeG on 2006-04-27 at 17:11:47
I say ban it.

The only real reason for Unprotection is to view triggers and how things are done, and we have Trigger Viewer for that.

But, if this program gets popular enough outside SeN, I believe that we will need a Policy change at one point or another, but it's best to attempt to not have that happen.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by CaptainWill on 2006-04-27 at 18:38:29
If we ban it now we'll look stupid later. A program this powerful is going to be very popular and we might as well just acknowledge its existence in public now, rather than burying our heads in the sand and hoping it will go away.

While I'd be annoyed if people steal maps non-stop with this OSMAP - I think it will at least allow honest newbie mapmakers to dissect and examine the best maps out there more thoroughly than they can with Trigger Viewer.

This is starting to look like a UFO cover-up or something.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by LegacyWeapon on 2006-04-27 at 20:12:29
I don't think banning it would achieve much.

I say work together to find a solution.

We have tutorials for everything!

The most flawless protection ever: The best protection that never fails, is submit your map to several sites that host maps, such as ourselves, starcraft.org and so on. This way, you can at least insure that the websites have the unrigged versions with your name on your own creation. If people ever search for your map, this will be what they download. If you want to be known for your map making skills, map making communities is the best place to go. Normal Battle.net users don't care about peoples accomplishments as much as other map makers.

I think it's a lot like a castle full of people (mappers) with a great door (representing protection) and those who support unprotection trying to get in. And now the door is breaking down (from unprotector program) but nobody knows so they don't do anything about it. Perhaps we should inform the public of this problem and perhaps we, together, can come up with a solution.
