You just had to beat me to the punch.
I don't think it's that great of a name ethier. Revolution just had a certain zing to it.

Wii is used to represent togetherness, and shiz like that.

When my roomate wakes up, i'll post more about his explaination of the name.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Golden-Fist on 2006-04-27 at 17:19:27
Yeah Wii represents "We" as in the console for everyone. It's for gamers, eldery people, children, and other type of person out there. It's called W"ii" because apparently "ii" means good luck in Japanese, which is odd because Yoshi is japanese for Good Luck. I guess they just like using different words for the meaning of Good Luck. I get the idea of it, but the name still sucks. And that's also what the link was for.

It's called Wii because Nintendo is being a farking retard. I mean, who thought up of that name? Someone high? It does sound like a sexual eupheism, and "Wii" just looks retarded. People are gonna pronounce it 'Whey" and "whyee" and stupid things like that. Revolution is a much better name. Plus, what about box design? "Nintendo Wii" would just look uberly retarded.

This pissed me off when I read it on digg.

I don't see how naming the PC "electric box" changes how much fun I'll have playing CS or Starcraft. It's just a name, calm down.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Golden-Fist on 2006-04-27 at 20:31:48
Yeah but you can't make jokes about electric box. It just means the name is plain. There's no need for Nintendo to make there entire mission statement in a 3 letter word.

You want to come and jack into my electronic box? We can have fun all night, playing with my input port.

See? I just made a joke or two (Even though they are stupid) about "Electronic Box"

It's a name. Get over it.

And by the way: Do you guys fail to realize that the Japanese are who made NINTENDO? It's called Famicom. Now just stfu already.

Dear Nintendo: Give up. Sega did, now it's your turn. Make games for the PlayStation 3 while you still can.

Dear Nintendo, you had a great idea with Revolution, but read: This is the American market. We don't go for vague sexual euphesisms with double "i"s

I don't think it makes a difference, but I'd rather be playing with a Revolution than a Wii.

I still think the same about purchasing it.

Well the internet exploded yesterday on account of the Wii announcement. I don't think anyone expected them to announce the name before E3, but their reason for doing so makes sense. Now we get all of the stupid puns and griping out of the way now, so E3's focus will be on the actual games and system.

I had people sending me links to an online petition to get the name changed back to Revolution. Gimme a break. First of all, if you think any actual corporation takes an online petition seriously, I've got a bridge to sell you. Second, it's just a name. Get over it. It sounds silly? Yeah, well what the fark is a "google"? That's what I thought.

(Update: So you can stop emailing me, a "googol" is the term for the very large number. A google is nothing. They are not the same thing.)

Like the name or not, every single tech related webpage, blog, or forum was talking about the Wii yesterday. You can't buy that kind of media exposure. And Nintendo got it for free yesterday. The little poem they wrote explaining the meaning of Wii might have been a bit cheesy, but A++ in Business 101 for Nintendo.

Personally the name has grown on me. Visually I like it. I haven't actually had to say "Nintendo Wii" out loud in conversation yet, so we'll see how that goes. But when it comes down to it, what the hell do I care what they name their system? I just want to play the video games.

Tim Buckley (of CTRL-ALT-DEL) made a good point today, the name certainly did buy them alot of exposure.

And your name is better? Even if you were just throwing it out and kidding, I ask you: Can you come up with something better?

That's why you all just need to shut up. If you understood how business works, this was probibly the best move done by them.

Wii is the same in every language. It's supposed to stand for We because the Japanese have no E. The double I makes the E pronunciation; Therefore, it's spelt: Wii

Just shut up already. For christ sakes. It's supposed to represent that the Revolution is for EVERYONE; Hence, WE.

That doesn't make any sense though. Wii was used by little children when they had to go to the bathroom. Electic box is never used as some sort of joke.

Last time I checked he's not 42 and a professional video game console and game designer. And I can think of a better one: "Nintendo Revolution" sounds cool. They could've called it "Nintendo Everyone" or something.

For some reason naming a console something completely retarded and related to disposing of bodily waste doesn't sound like "the best move done by them". But then again they've done a lot of bad things recently so you're probably right.

"Wii" does not exsist in any language. And pronoucing "we" in french, means Yes. Not everyone. I doubt they'll call it the Nintendo Nous, and Nintendo Nosotros.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kellodood on 2006-04-28 at 17:20:05
Yes in French is spelt Wi. The point being, the double II, makes it so every language doesn't have a confliction within it. Do you know any language that uses double II anywhere in it? That is still around?

Thanks for the flame.
It was just a joke, Voyager said he would never buy one. I said, what if they named it after him?

Explain to me, what is so hard to make multiple models of the Wii with the name Revolution in different languages?

No it's spelt as "Oui" but that was close?

Well lets not get too off topic but when i first discovered the new name "wii' I though it was pronounced "why" but its not the name i was worried about it is the games for example. When you play starcraft ghost on the "wii" you can acually do a sniper shoot or roll out of the way in real life. Now im wondering how are you suppose to play super mario bros 3 on such a hard to use controller that looks like a T.V REMOTE!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by The_Shattered_moose on 2006-04-29 at 12:25:22
The "tv remote" slides into something that looks a whole lot like a gamecube controller, I've seen their mock up of it somewhere...
