Final Fantasy VII. This highly overrated game is entering my to-easy to go judging. Is it really the best RPG ever created? Lets find out. Now I've been reading alot of reviews about this game on GameFaq's and most of them say "the graphics suck" although they don't take note of the fact that Final Fantasy 7 was the first 3-Diminsional game ever created. Yes the graphic's suck now but that doesn't exactly bring it down in value, well it does but not by much.

Now I've also heard over and over again that the story is all-powerful or the story completely sucks. Most people that say this don't exactly understand the story. Now I'll say that I really enjoyed the story but not because of the main plot but more of the individual character stories. I find the main plot to be complex but easy to understand if you pay enough attenchion to it. The individual characters are very interesting to me(mostly anyway). Actually the only thing/character that brings this story down to my rating of 9 is Cait Sith aka Reeve. Honestly was there really much of a point of this character after disc one? Well there is but really, who wants a friggin stuffed animal in their party.

Yay on to the gameplay, easy as it is to understand yet abit more difficult and complex than you might actually think. Ya it's pretty straight forward with the equiptment and materia system but then there's the awesome combination of it such as "Added Effect + Time (in weapon will make a physical attack also cast slow on the enemy, in the Armor it will protect from Slow & Stop)" An easy combination and deadly in a way. But on to the more complex combinations like "Mega-all, deathblow-Hp Absorb/Mp Absorb (Restores a large amount of Hp/Mp while causing damage to all opponents)" Pretty neat, eh? And my all-time favorite combination "Final Attack + Phoenix" This will summon the Phoenix which attacks the enemy for 1000 damage plus casts Life 2 on the party.

The Replay Value of this game is actually a good thing for two reasons, you can have a chance to fix anything you screwed up in the first time/s you played it and you'll get a better understanding of the story. Not to mention you can try new things and use different characters throughout the game. Shows you all the different stories you can have. Example - Party of Cloud, Tifa, Barret (first game) - Party of Cloud, Yuffie, Cid(Second game) - etc. Not much changed just the character speech(which I find amusing especially from Squares bad humour).

Graphics - 8 - Since people complained about it I'm rerating it.(Note that the rating is now comparing it to all other games in 1997.)
Gameplay - 9 - The gameplay is one to enjoy, 9/10.
Storyline - 10 - All the different things you can do makes this story different in small ways everytime, yes a 10/10
Replay Value - 7 - It's really a great game to play over a couple times so you reached a 7/10, woohoo..
Value - Surperme - It's just one game you can really appreciate for what it's made RPG's into today.

My favorite game ever..Final Fantasy VIII...Not.. My baised judging will hurt this game horribly tongue.gif . Well we all know Squall is a SeeD Candidate that's getting ready to take his final SeeD exam to become a SeeD. The game starts out with Squall and his aparent rivil Seifer fighting in the training center. Seifer being the cheap-ass he is decides to slice Squalls face. Squall returns the favor they both faint the end. Okey so what we're looking at is a pretty sad game here for 3 reasons, which I'll list in my next 3 paragraphs.

The first reason being the gameplay, the battle system is horrible, pure crap. I really want to meet the guys that designed it so I can slap them for taking Magic Points(MP) out of the game. Seriously, Draw? Wtf is that. The games battle system is pretty straight forward. Use the GF's(Summons) to kill the enemy. Also use the GF's to take the hits for you. Not too hard at all. Probably the hardest part of the game is getting all the different GF's. But it's not too bad even with the dull story line and sad battle its worth playing. Also another flaw of the game is if your patient enough you can get level 99 at the start of the game. All you have to do is keep battling in the Training Center. Which is probably another reason why this game sucks.

Second reason, Storyline. It really goes nowhere. Basically your out to stop a person called Edea. She's a scorceress or something like that. Her husband is the guy that started SeeD. His name is Cid(That's Cid the VIII'th tongue.gif) . After you beat Edea she comes to her senses and tells you about how a scorceress from the future posessed her(honestly can you get any dumber in there Square?) While that's happening something happens to Rinoa. Basically its one big love story with nothing else to it and very little time to go and explore. Through there's still some ups. The characters backgrounds are all very interesting, which what kept me playing it.

Third Reason, Replay Value. Once you beat this game it literally too boring to play again. I tried, and made it to the second disc before I said screw it. The games poor quality in battle and story brings the game way to far down to be a high quality game. There is one upside to this game, the graphics are a big improvement to the FFVII graphics, which is a good thing. The CGI's in it are much more lifelike then FFVII's too which shows they did a half-ass job on FFVII's graphics.(damn them.)

Graphics - 7 - Very nice, a giant improvement since FFVII. Gives the game any edge it has.
Gameplay - 5.5 - I'll be fair, I didn't like it but it wasn't that bad. Could have been MUCH better though.
Storyline - 3 - Horrible, the only thing you want to pay attenchion to about this games story is the character backgrounds
Replay Value - 2 - If you suceed in it, I commend you for your nerdiness tongue.gif
Value - Below Average - A game I'd recommend to anyone that only wants to beat it and move on to the next game.

I don't agree with you. You can't compare a game that came out... what... in 1997? to games that come out today.

What review are you refering to? FF7 or 8? Because I'm pretty sure I wasn't comparing anything to games today. In fact the only difference in todays FF's and the old FF's are Graphics and voice acting.

You gave 7 a 4. I don't know if that's based on back then, or rating it today.

Well, I'll start off by telling you about the question I added into the general questions. More and more RPG's are getting voice acting in there and for the most part it's...acceptable, sometimes very enjoyable, and sometimes COMPLETELY annoying. So now that you all know about our new rating lets get onto the game, shall we? Now if you've played Star Ocean the second story you'll see some simularities(Bonus Dungons at the end, and maybe some fimilar characters). Now I'll admit I've never played SOTSS, which is regreatful to me, oh well life goes on.

Okey so lets get to the basic's, graphics. Is it any good? Well it's no Final Fantasy X, but then again what is? I'd say there still alot better then FF IX(9) but they arn't as great as Final Fantasy X, as I've already mentioned. The CGI's are really nice, I like them and again not as good as Final Fantasy X but better then 9's. The biggest problem I found with the graphics are the CGI, there just arn't enough of them. If I went played and beat the game right now I'd probably see about 5-6 CGI's in disc 1. And like 1-3 CGI's in disc 2(not counting the ending). I mean look back to FFX, there were 50 different clips, some longer then 2 or 3 of Star Oceans CGI's put togeather. I mean shame on Tri-pod for that. Still it's not something to discount. 8.5/10.

Moving on, gameplay. I swear in all the Square games I've played, the battle system in this is by far the best, and I just love how your health limit isn't 9999 and your Mp limit is over 999 and even the level goes up to 255, which is way less irritating then '99'. The battle system can be abit complicated at first. theres your long range weak attacks, and your short range weak attacks(X button), then you got the short range strong attacks and long range strong attacks(O button). Here you put the skills you learn and ultilize in battle. Here's the catch, for everyone of your abilities it costs a certain ammount of Hp/Mp, and it changes depending if its on weak or strong.(more Hp/Mp cost on strong, less on weak)The same applies for your Fury use(which I'm not even gonna bother trying to explain). Then you get some special points each level you earn. You put these points to Hp/Mp/Attack/Defence. These attributes upgrade by a certain ammount each level. For example hp increases 5, then 10, then 100, then 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 2700. Something like that.

The part that makes a game...a game. Storyline. This is my favorite part of every game, I love the main plot but as I've made clear, are the characters, their personalities and their backgrounds. Now making my job in this section awhole bunch easier, we have what I love to call the Dictonary. Yes there's a dictonary in this game and it helps alot, and I mean alot. The story is actually abit corney but what brings it down are the lines some of the characters say. Actually the game is quite humourous and offers alot of laughs. Actually the voice acting is pretty average too, not that great but good enough. If I could I'd change 3 of the characters voice actors and that about it. Replaying this game is totally worth it, doing so and beating it unlocks different endings to the game for the hardcore fans. It's fantastic.

Graphics - 8.5 - The graphic's are pretty good, more great CGI from your's truely, Square Enix.
Gameplay - 9.5 - The gameplay by far outdates anything from Final Fantasy. Good job Square.
Storyline - 6.5 - Unfortunately the Storyline was good, until the second disc. It gets abit corney but it's still acceptable.
Replay Value - 10 - Gotta see 'em all..pokemon..? Uh...Right well you gotta see them, I personally only saw 2 of the 10, heard they were great though
Voice Acting - 8 - Voice acting was pretty good except for 3-5 characters or so.
Value - Great - Overall a pretty awesome game, I mean how many games let you got over level 99? Not many, and the mini-games are awesome. -

Ok, we've hit a problem. This recieves an 8.5 out of 10. Now, looking back, the order of the value was supreme, below average, and great. Since when is great better than supreme? Since when is 7.5 better than 8.5? Am I the one seeing the problem with these reviews? Here's a better rubric:
9-10: Supreme

I didn't bother adding the scores up and dividing them, maybe you have a problem but I don't. If you don't like that I don't use math in it then thats your problem. I don't exactly know how to do it anyway.

It wouldn't make sense if everything scored a 1 except a 10 on gamplay and getting the value as supreme, now would it?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Cloud on 2006-05-02 at 18:46:27
Of course I'd do that cause I have no sense in rating 'fairly' isn't that right? Remember who your talking to here. I don't use math but I'd never do that. I'm not an idoit

Oh and on the side note the Value on which I call it isn't an overall, it's what "I" as the person value this game as. Not what the calculator says.

Considering that your a Square Enix fan, doesn't that make your reviews biased?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Cloud on 2006-05-02 at 19:00:42
There are alot of Square Enix games I hate. For example, Grandia III, Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy VIII, Dragon Quest VIII.

Ya I'm an Enix fan but how would they be biased, its not like I like ever game they make.

And could you keep this to PM, this is my review section.

No need, I'm really just messing with you as I do with many other people on this site. I was just pointing out something I found quite weird. But yes, generally, a fan of a company will write a review that's biased towards the company.

I have to say, Dr.Shotgun is right. Final Fantasy 7 isn't the very first game to have 3D graphics, go to the past very clearly.

O please this game was soo bad, actually only fairly bad
how I saw it there was only one good voice actor in the entire game .. Nel
and the story line bleh that stinked! entirely.o man and you would like more cg's
WHO AM I!!!! No lamer than that dude,. battle system kinda fun kinda ignoring
but scores so well with the two player option #D but still is nothing compared to vIII or tales of symphonia. Now the Towns were alright.nothing special really

Okey I think I'll start off by asking myself a question. Why the freak am I still doing reviews on FF games? I've already established the fact that I love them no matter how crapty they are. Bah, oh well. Okey on to the review, Final Fantasy IX with the famous theif Zidane. Seriously I wanna meet the guy that thought it'd be cool to put a tail on the main character, just so I can hit him/her. Okey well lets learn about the new graphics, story, and gameplay of this addition to my FF review series.

Graphics. Finally we're onto the age of the beautiful CGI graphics and the not-so-bad in-game graphics. Honestly the CGI didn't change much, just looks abit more realistic and that was as far as it really goes. The CGI's still arn't as good as FFX but the big difference between the graphics in the two games is the in-game graphics. The 3D in-game graphics are still abit choppy but acceptable. Actually I've heard once or twice that Final Fantasy IX was made to 'entertain' the SE fan's until they finished FFX. I'd have to agree with this rumour.

Seriously when I played this game the battle system was a 'meh' . It's pretty straightforward for an FF game. Equipt weapons to learn abilites, spells, etc. Use them in battle and win. The only thing I found that stood out in battle was the special abilites in the game, otherwise known as 'Trance' . It interested me on how some of them work, for example Vivi's Dbl Blk Mag. You cast 2 spells in 1 turn. The dissappointment for me was that you lost Trance once the battle was over and it wasn't reliable to use against bosses for that reason. Most of the time you ended up wasting Trance on regular enemies that are half dead by the time you got your Trance, which totally pissed me off. Lastly bosses. I friggin hate how you only get 'AP' and no Exp from them. It's really frusterating for me.

Yay storyline time. I don't see how the story could be more straightforward, pretty much a basic love story. The thing that made it a 'whoa I didn't see that coming' was when you find out Zidane is basically a puppet. An uncontrolable puppet made by some ugly guy that looks like Darth Malak from Star Wars KOTOR. Like the second world was enough but that was just one of those 'Yup, never saw that coming' moments. That alone brought the story all the way up to a 'way better then FF8' state. Replaying it is fun but not really recommended from me.

Graphics - 8.5 - The in-game graphics are getting better every game. Nicely done.
Gameplay - 6 - Pretty basic and abit disappointing but much better then FFVIII
Storyline - 8 - Straightforward but has that 'Whao didn't see that comin' moment. Again nicely done
Replay Value - 7 - Meh, I don't recommend it but the game's still likeable
Value - Above Average - For a game they said was just to distract the FF fans until FFX and PS2 they still did a good job.

Are you freaking retarded? You can't compare graphics from a game that is almost 10 years old to games from now days! What kind of review are you trying to do!? You're supposed to base it off of other games from it's time, FFS!

And +: You deserve to be shot.

Yeah. May want to fix that.

I'd have to agree with the others about the inherant bias. I don't really like a lot of the recent SquEnix (yeah, I call it SquEnix, pronounced Squee-nix) games, but I'm still biased if I were to review the old Square games. I loved FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, FFX, and hell I even loved the non-FF games like the Bouncer. I thought they were all great in their own ways (and I even went so far as to make walkthroughs for them - excluding the Bouncer, of couse). I may now hate Kingdom Hearts and its sequel, but I still appreciate the homage to the older Square charcters - and thus the bias remains. I admit I enjoyed seeing a teen Wakka and Sephiroth in a new game, despite it being infected with that fun little plague called Disney.

Also, I agree with the others that your 4 on graphics for FFVII is full of crap. The graphics were amazing when the game came out. We can all agree they are not as spectacular as today's expectations, but in context they were wonderful.

EDIT:
On the topic of graphics, why is it that FFVIII and FFIX got higher ratings than 6? I mean if you are really claiming to be fair, those graphics sucked as well compared to the standards of video games today. You could even argue that FFX lacks as well, based on what we can find today.

And you mention VIII being a great improvement from VII. Ironic considering when VIII came out, fans were pissed off because they enjoyed the small cartoony characters portrayed in VII (hence the smaller characters in the later IX). Plus you fail to address the fact that technology changed between the making of VII and VIII (and even IX), which would obviously mean that graphics would be better.

I changed the rating. Anyway if I completely rated it with standardized graphics it would have been in the negatives lol.

You failed to consider the wait between FF7 and FF8. FF7 came out in 1997 and FF8 came out in 1998. Not a very big difference, and I merely stated that FF8 graphics should have been the graphics for FF7. I'll admit I never liked the graphics on FF8 eather but the CGI's from 7 to 8 was a improvement beyond their expectations as far as I'm concerned. Actually I think the graphics on the world maps of each FF game FF7 had the best graphics. The thing I didn't like about the world display map was your characters were BIGGER then some of the towns you could enter(kinda wierd if you ask me..).
