Light in the Dark RPG is an open rpg where you pick one of six classes, defeat six bosses, take the keys they have and unlock the gate to the final boss. I know, it sounds cliche, but it will have a:
starport spell system
barracks potion system
boss monster spell system
near-random boss placement
revival potion system
and finally a level up system where you can choose between weapon and armor upgrades, an extra 10% health, or better spells.
Currently, a friend is terraining it (awesome job, so far, by the way), and most of the players triggers aren't done. A few more ideas for bosses are needed (I am posting for help on a half-dozen other forums looking for unique ideas for bosses), so I would appreciate any help.
My only real boss idea is a 10,000 hp overlord that does nothing, except healing itself and summoning monsters for you to fight.
I don't to spoil the story (it is good though) by posting it. Please leave feedback on these ideas.
The ultralisk is just waiting for a boss position. Bosses can be really anything you want, whatever you want, when you want, how you want.
Yes, I realize that, but I've completely run out of unique ideas for bosses. And yes, the ultralisk will be the brute force boss.
I'm trying to come up with unique ideas, beyond just sitting and shooting, healing when needed and retreating when you need to.
What do you think of a potion that kills any weak enemy in the area around the one that uses it. I like the name Light Flash Potion for it
.
Im still not amused, i barely get intertested in maps i barely know about.
Ack, sorry, I've never made a topic on one of my maps, and I saw that pinned PCFredz thing just after I made this... Anywho:
1-4 players
6 classes (Summoner, Paladin, Photomancer, Dark Hunter, Cleric and Guardian)
5 spells per class (some repeat from class to class)
4 seperate potions (healing, mana, revival and light flash)
Shared kills, experiance and minerals
level ups where you pick between 500 minerals for upgrades and potions, a better spell (only one is available at the start, a sixth point doubles you mana income), and an extra 10% hp
Great story which I slaved over for... well... minutes, still pretty good.
GODLY terraining (special thanks to MageOfMystra)
a few attacks on the town
and finally unlimited enemies (generated by spawn points)
Please tell me what you think...
I found that pinned copy/paste thread AFTER I made this thread. My computer unfortunately has a really nasty virus and I have to wipe my whole hard drive (I managed to save my maps, thankfully), so I can't put up screenshots just yet.
And If you REALLY want, heres the story:
(keep in mind that I'm still working out the kinks):
In a land, the people founded a bustling metropolis, full of honor, law and light. But one mage delved too deep, and became obsessed with magic of shadows. While investigating this new form of magic, he found an alternate world, where everything was dark and the castles, which stand so majestically in this world, are smoking ruins that house a festering evil the likes of which the people have never known.
The mage opened a gate to this dark land in the hopes of gaining power beyond that of the most powerful archmages, and a Dragon of the darkest shadow emerged and tore the world apart. The people battled these creatures of darkness for years until only one of their greatest castles remained. Now, some heros have gone out to stop the Shadow Dragon and save the world.
Not too shabby, considering I thought the particulars up while I was writing it.
I like how the origins of the power is developed, rather than just some random guy becoming all-powerful for no reason. What you want to work on next, is the story of the current situation. What about these heroes? Why are they labeled as heroes? Why them? What about the rest of the world? How did they fall?
Explaining such stuff would definately help your RPG become better storywise.
Your philosophy on having bosses that are more than just 'powerful' is a good one. I thought of that Overlord thing, except as a normal enemy, but I decided to remove it since it clashed with the systematics. How about making a Ghost that teleports around the battle site? That would be equally frustrating as to the Overlord Boss.

theres an edit button...i suggest reposting all your information onto there.
anyways, how about this ovie boss is in a room. The room would be seriously booby trapped. There are certain pads on the floor, the overlord will try to reach one of the pads. If it reaches the pad, the 'defenses' activate and all hell breaks loose. if you hurt it enough however before it reaches the pad, it'll transform into an ultra, your roles would then be reversed. You would have to touch a pad and activate the defenses in order to kill the ultra(it wouldn't be invincible, but have enough hp to be unkillable). the booby traps, the ultra, and various other enemies would do their best to stop you. When you reach the pads, you'd have to dodge the defenses and hope the ultra dies. when it does, it'll transform back into overlord. repeat as necessary.
I think it'd be more entertaining if the ultra had several different forms:
1. slow normal ultra(nothing special)
2. Fast ultra
3. many hallucinated ultras
4. it just plain explodes into a bunch of smaller units
5. teleporting ultra
Well, he's going to have several bosses, and I wouldn't recommend using up all the ideas on a single boss fight. Unless he gathers a bunch of other ideas that he could use.

well, i originally thought of it just transforming between ovie and ultra but that kinda seemed retarded and boring. So I thought of the booby trap thing. it became unretarded and less boring. Then to spice it up, changing ultraliks forms. Now its just perfect:)
ADDITION:
another idea for a boss fight. It'd be more of a puzzle boss. You'd be surrounded by 6 or so bosses. they could be different units or the same one, doesn't matter(i think same gives a better effect though, i suggest a high templar). You'd have a special weapon, it'd be trigger-based, you have one attack with it. When you are surrounded by the bosses, they'd be circling around you when you're given a text riddle based on nearby things or previous game details. They would hint at one of the enemies, when you're given enough time to solve the riddle, they begin to move in towards you. If you kill the right one, they'll change to another unit and back away and circle. if you don't they'll touch you, there'll be a fire effect and you'll lose some hitpoints. and they won't change.
if the boss units change, you'll be able to make more levels
if they don't you could end it quickly or do w/e you want.
it'd be interesting to have a choice, to go back the way you came or fight another boss for a shortcut or something.
I wouldn't mind playing a new Open RPG if you pull it off professionally...
Every boss will have their own spell system randomly triggered (only when the heros bring a unit to the location surrounding each boss) by a 'junkyard dog unit'.
I thought of a High Templar boss, which constantly switches positions and makes numerous hallucinations (is there a trigger to kill hallucination units only, by the way Edit: I got it, a trigger that sets it to 0% energy), and keeps throwing out spells to kill you.
And since this is an open rpg, you can tackle the bosses in whatever order you want, and each boss will be placed randomly in one of two points.
And I try to make my maps as professional as possible, I'll play this map with a few friends before I post it up and I don't use text like 'u gotta kill da bosses to get da keys' etc.
Yes I will try to work on the story a little bit. I have to put up how a few knights and wizards found out how effective dark magic is against dark creatures, so they became summoners and dark hunters.
Sorry, I am WAY to lazy to fill that whole thing out. If I missed something then ask me about it. My dogs are gonna kill me if I fill that out before I feed them, lol.
ADDITION:
And how about a boss spell that kill all of your spell units within the radius around the boss? This map will also feature Hyper Triggers. I wanted a new challenge in map making
.
Godly terraining? MageofMystic? Who is that...

I may be wrong, but i don't think that kills hallucinations. And i never knew that hyper triggers were a feature
I thought they were more like.. a standard.
Anywhoo's goodluck with it. Please, post some terrain screenshots. I'd like to see this godly terrain.

MageOfMystra is a friend of mine on Battle.net who agreed to help me with this. He also made (is making) a map called 270 Defense.

Hallucinations are supposed to die at 0 energy, and hyper triggers should be a feature, as most maps that feature it are of a somewhat/slightly higher quality (they're also MUCH more challenging to use).
As soon as I get my main computer running again (and figure out how to post screenshots). I'll post a few.
ADDITION:
Uhh, how do you post screenshots, I mananged to get some.
go to
imageshack.us, and upload a picture there. Then copy/paste the thing that says "Hotlink to forums" into the post.

more challenging? if anything it becomes easier and you don't have to put up with any little quirks of starcraft, like wait blocks. the faster trigger rate allows you to have death counters(which, unlike waits, are bug-free).

True enough, although I had trouble with my first death counter. And my friend suggests reaver counters, which I don't know how to do.
Godly blockiness! Sorry, I just had to say that.
I agree with that assessment, although my friend prefers the blockiness for some reason, I guess to say 'look what I did, people who don't have SCMDraft 2!!!'. But you gotta admit, pretty darn good job.
I wouldnt call the terrain godly, but its good i geuss for what your doing.
Gj... and good luck... i plan to make an rpg soon... xD no details right now.
At least you're gonna finish this map, even though it might not be as good as "SEN'S Standards"... Pfft...
