Well, the best thing is to just mess around a bit. Try every trigger a couple of times and just try something out.

Here are all Actions listed: http://www.staredit.net/index.php?tutorial=23
And here you got Conditions: http://www.staredit.net/index.php?tutorial=75
Here you got a nice Tuturial about switches (which are very useful): http://www.staredit.net/index.php?tutorial=116

Note that all of these links go to theTuturial secion (http://www.staredit.net/?act=tutorialshttp://www.staredit.net/?act=tutorials) which is THE place to go when you got a specific question.

Just to help you out a bit I'll give you a short tutorial about how triggers work.

Condition: Every trigger must have at least 1 condition. Starcraft will constanly check if these conditions are met, if they are 'true'. When they are met/true then the actions will be fired. An example of a condition is: 'Player1' brings at least 1 'Marine' to 'Location1'. Note that once a trigger has fired it will not fire again unless have a specific action called "preserve trigger". That action will cause that every time when your conditions are met the trigger will fire again.

Action: An action are the things which will happen once the conditions are met. An example action is: Kill 1 'Marine' at 'Location2'.

Locations: Locations can be made by switching to the Location Layer (I'm sure you can find it). Locations are very important and a lot of conditions and actions require you to input a location. You can also use the 'anywhere' location, but you need to make new locations yourself when you want something to happen at a specific place.

I hope this has helped you a bit. Remember, the best way to learn is just to try everything. Just mess around with triggers, switches, locations, units and you'll be a real map maker in no time smile.gif.

Good luck smile.gif.

Good advice, Daedalus.

untalmau, another tip: Try not to overcomplicate your triggers. Use the most direct method possible.
Don't have one trigger that activates another trigger, that activates another trigger, that activates another, etc. (unless it's actually to your advantage).
I often see people who are new to map making (or just dumb) doing this sort of thing. Make sure you get the most out of your triggers.

just a few little tips:

imo, the best conditions to know are 'bring' and 'command'

command refers to how many units of a certain type are on the whole map
bring refers to how many units of a certain type are in a certain section of a map.
the only exception to the bring condition is when 'anywhere' is set as the location, in which case bring works exactly like a 'command' condition.

the best action to know is 'preserve trigger'

this single action is the most used and critical action(and if it isn't, it oughta be) in stracraft mapmaking. like others have explained, it allows triggers containing them to repeat an infinite amount of times as long as its conditions are being met. to put it simply, this gives your map functionality and repeatable effect.

They don't work exactly the same. For one it's possible to resize the "Anywhere" location so it dosen't cover the whole map. Also you can't use the "Bring" condition to detect map revealers. (there are similar differences between the "Kill/remove units" actions and the "Kill/remove units at Location" actions.

Here's a map with a resized Anywhere location, it only coveres the dirt part of the map. There's a trigger that proves this.

When resizing the map with SF, the Anywhere location remains the original size.

You're so smarty. =)

It's possible for the editors to simply let us resize Anywhere, but they don't. People would probably just screw things up is they did.

Changing unit graphics would require you to make a mod. You can't do it with just a map.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Daedalus on 2006-05-08 at 08:35:48
Kenoli is right, if you want to change any graphics or certain other things then you will have to make a 'mod'. Basically that means you have to edit certain files besides the map itself. When you create a mod you can't just play it on Battle.net since the other people also need the changed data files in order to play it. That's why Mods aren't very populair, though you can make incredible cool maps with it.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kenoli on 2006-05-08 at 10:36:14
Yes, mods offer much more flexbility than maps. You can change pretty much anything with a mod. You could add a completely new race with unit, technologies, spells, etc. if you had the time and know-how, and then make a bunch of maps, using the new race in a new campaign.

With maps we just use that Blizzard made, though sometimes we find something that they didn't intend make. =)
