Staredit Network -> StarCraft Editing Related -> Huge maps?

My question is this: is it possible to create maps larger than 256x256? I remember way back when I had one map that was something like 1024x1024 that would work on single player (With modified files, many, many files that I downloaded to make it work). I know it's possible to make ridiculously small maps (I have one thats 256x12, but haven't tried other sizes), but I don't care about that, I just want to know if there is a program that can create maps larger than 256x256 that will work with SC. Any and all information is appreciated.

In short, no

SCM Draft lets you set the size to whatever you want, but you probably won't be able to play them. You might be able to if you made a mod.

As stated by the above posts, StarCraft will not recognize anything above 256x256 (or this is from what I understand.) That map size is the maximum StarCraft can read (Also something I'm assuming.) Now to answer your question, I doubt there is a program (other than SCM Draft) that allows map sizes to be extended way over 256x256 because a) no one would be able to play the map. b) it won't be recognized by StarCraft. c) People will not use it because of list points a and b.

If the map format only uses one byte to store the raw map size, it's impossible to have sizes greater than 256x256 regardless of anything you do, unless you hack the EXE and render original-format maps unusable in your version of SC.

I found that even the max map size is very limiting and can't supply all of the spacing needs for many different RPG designs. ><

I wish there was bigger too!

Well I believe that there was a mod for bigger map size or something. At least I remember getting a map called find the pylon or something, where you searched a 1024x1024 map for a hidden pylon. pinch.gif

I have played a map that was called spider-mine defense where the map was the perfect size of a screen wide and 256 long, I am not sure the exact widthness but it was so you couldnt move your screen left or right and you could see the whole thing!

kinda curious, what happens if you make the width/length smaller than the limit? would it crash?

I just know how wide the screen is during play. I've had my share of playing around with custom map sizes. (using SCM toolkit of course, you don't think I actually play SC do you? lol)

Yeah, well 20x12 (X,Y). 12 Vertical tiles is actually slightly larger than the whole screen but 11 is too small and you can scroll off and crash if only 11 pixels tall.

In summation, it is impossible to make a map larger than 256x256 without modifying the EXE.
