I'm just curious as to the public opinion of what moderation and administration of a website (most likely this one
)
should be doing. What are their functions?
I've been around a lot of types of administrators. There's the "ghost-like" admins who do stuff behind the scenes and are rarely seen and hard to contact. I've seen mean person admins that don't take crap from anyone and ban people like it were eating or drinking. But what I'm asking here is, what are the admins for?
As for moderation, there's lines to draw and such. What situtations warrant stepping into? What point is stepping in too far?
Important: This thread has to potential to actually influence policy. Please don't post "THEY SHOULD SERVE ME!" or other garbage.I believe admins are here just to make sure things are in order. And to do this, I believe being "ghost-like" is only what's necessary. By being a bratty moderator who doesn't take crap from people only can create more trouble, but probably different ones, sometimes (such as people starting to complain about bias or point fingers and such.)
I believe an Administrator and a Moderator should be for the people, by the people (To an extent of course) They shouldn't allow petty emotions such as hatred or sympathy to take hold. They should rule with an iron fist when needed.
If someone deserves punishment for their actions, give it to them. If someone is crying about another member, when the other member has done nothing wrong, punish the whiner for false acusations. If a Moderator or an Admin is not pulling their weight, boot them, and make the others take up the slack (To show disipline)
And the Admin should get rid of Null to clean up spam
Edit: I do also believe the authority should hold no grudges.. In my eyes, that's a weakness. (But as I said: My eyes)
Funny answer: They're here to tick us off and not let us have fun
Serious answer: They're here to keep laws the way they were ment to be. Keeping order is a good thing to any huge website. With out admins, good places would turn bad.
For instance, I know a chat site that doesnt give a freaking flying flip about their chat. They have NO ADMINS. Guess what, hackers fill the place and we gotta wait 5 days for them to fix it. O.o
THEY SHOULD SERVE ME!
How long did you think it would take someone to say that?
Anyway, there job should be to keep the rules followed. They should be like the police. Also, they should do whatever they need to make the site better. And I think you guys do a good job on this site.

I don't think he wants sarcasm in here.. Or brown-nosers...
Anyways: What do the Admin and Moderators think the biggest problem this forum has? May we hear your opinion on the matter?

Ghostlike admin = IP
I like admins that are friendly, interact with the community and stuff.
An admin should be fixing the site, making it the best it can be, even changing small, minor errors.
An admin shouldn't let anything go, or be too strict, right in the middle is good.
I say stop things before they happen, don't wait till they've happened.
Administration should be the law of a website. Ban spammers, flamers (reminds me of how long ihatett remained around....) and so on. But admins deserve to be functioning members of the society they govern
Biggest problem? Probably the reports and warn system code itself. I just recently put myself on the 3 discussion forums just so I would know what was going on - apparently a lot of conflicts happen here that I'm uninformed about. If the forum moderated, reports go only to those moderators of the forum - which means I would have no idea.
Another thing is that it is virtually impossible to track the "activity level" of moderators. Doing so would be a very tedious and time consuming process since there is no code to automate it.
Hopefully, both these limitations will be rectified in v5.
Being administrator is being dictator, rule without mercy and rationale. So something like president Bush.
the admin is like the man. they enforce all rules set by them only this is a little different. if you tick a guy off, you're out. so it's kinda like a monarchy as far as admin rule over members. admins are all powerful though, and we trust them to do their job fairly and be equal in descions.
Admins should generally keep the peace and make sure the website is running smoothly. Basically anything a president or prime minister does, except with a little more power because if need be, a violent citizen can be removed much more easily
I think you're doing a great job as it is.
Admins: To sum it up, keep the site running & keep maintenence flowing well. Sure a little community contact doesn't harm, but if you can handle both that's fine. I know most admins are busy with the site like this one because there's so much coding that takes place.
Moderators: To keep basic control of the forums that they are specified to moderate, punishment should be kept to a fine art, a verbal offense, then a warn. Also to quell spam-ridden topics and just pure spam. Also to keep in contact with the admins so they can know what is upcoming and be prepared for it.
Overall, the admin is the law and the guy that sits behind the desk (no offense), and the moderators are the law-men (going out in front).
Even though admins do have the right to do the same thing moderators have.
The administrator in my opinion should set the example for all the members of the site to follow. Create and enforce the rules. And in times ask for public opinion and maybe even let a vote be carried out for the more minor jobs such as your DLDB or just a plain new moderator(such as EzDay). Of course this can backfire from people picking the most popular members and ones that they know will not follow the rules so to counter then you pick people you see that are setting the example. A administrator is also there to help the members, sort out issues, fix the problems, etc.
In my opinion a very good example of an administrator is Mini Moose, really in my opinion your doing a great job. All said and done, have a nice day
.
Moderators must be robot-like. They have to be programmed to do certain things and those things never change. Moderators must follow a set of written rules, through and through, without any emotions affecting their decisions on when a rule comes into play. Moderators must not take any sides and deal with whatever situation accordingly, no matter the consequence.
If you've ever seen a fictional show where there are god-like or highly advanced beings that control all things in the universe (usually a council of faceless giants to judge a criminal), then you know what a moderator should be like.
Administratio is the person/group of people who tell other people who can't figure out for themselves what to do.
Administration monitors the uncouth who are unable to manage themselves properly. They make sure that the population has a sense of moral and dignity, so that it does not succumb to an uncivilized disorderly mob.
Admins are metaphysical napkins.
Administrators = Police (find flame/spamm), Goverment (defelop laws/rules), Cort (warn/ban), Mass-media (inform the people about things they should know).
I didnt realy bother to read..
First alot of ppl seem to get the admin confused with moderator..
Admins deal with more technical issues
Moderators are those who deal with troubleing members.. And spam and all sorts of things..
I think almost everything is good at SeN.. Except for the warns..

Impossible. If he can 'nunciate, then its impossible for him to be like bush.
They need to take out problems before they can develop. For example: let's say someone makes a stupid thread. It should be immedietly hidden/deleted and the creator should get a pm warning. If it continues, BAM they're gone.
But really, if you've ever read The Giver, that's what it should be like (of course to a lesser extent). That's my opinion.
