When you attach files to a post or a private message, do they need to be in winzip form like they do when putting them on the download database?

The file im wondering about is an scx. file and made with starforge.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, i didnt know where else to put it.

Allowed attachment types are something like:

.scm
.scx
.zip
.jpg
.jpeg
.png
.gif
.txt

This applies to all places where you can attach a file, including the Downloads Database. Please try to refrain from submitting ZIP files to the DLDB, as it makes files much harder to review.

How come you're not allowed to attach .mpq files?

They're the exact same format as .scm and .scx maps. (maps where made from .mpq files, they just changed the extension)

The only differance is they're used for mods, and not maps tongue.gif

Map attachments vary on what you're submitting (that's why selecting the right category is vital).

Why aren't .rar files allowed? WinRAR has better compression than WinZip.

I think most people use WinZip now days. Plus, they might want not want to use both.

Not everybody has the WinRar, and now that Windows XP has a built in Unzipper, about everybody can unzip zip files. And it's not like the compression is that big of a deal. The files are small

Large sounds could certainly use all the compression they can get.

How big are these large sound files?

I just have a feeling that the difference between compressions is hardly enough to bother with. Anyway, .rar would be better for me, but not for everybody =\

After testing it, .rar files don't have any more compression than .zip files.
They can retain information that .zip files can't though.

For people who put their maps in .zip before submitting, please don't do that. Scm/scx are archives and files in them are are already compressed. So putting them in .zip will only annoy people.

I'm just saying, they're more likely to be able to unzip files rather than unrar them.

And I guess WinZip is a bit more public than WinRar, too.
