What editor are you using? In SCXE and normal StarEdit, it's under players. Click the player, and select computer from the drop down list. In SF, it's also under players. but you select the player and then click on computer. However, you need to place start locs for them, otherwise SF will keep telling you to. In SCMD, it's under map description. Under each player, there's a drop down list. Select computer.

I have whatever version is on the game. I have not downloaded anything new. I have created start locations for four players and have it set as a four player map. I have the first four players as user-selectable human. I want to be able to choose human or computer. Thanks for the help

Humans and comps cannot be in the same force.

If you mean in the in-game lobby, you can't choose whether it's a comp or human unless you're playing it in melee.

User Selectable is only for choosing race, not human/computer.

I think you answered the comp question. I want to be able to view my mission breifing (which if i understand correctly must be use map settings) and i am not able to choose comp while the game is use map settings. Now my next problem is how do i set up the game so that it doesn't end as soon as i start the game.
Thanks for all your help

The default triggers on a map are just like in a melee game. If you control no buildings, you lose, if your enemy controls no buildings you win.
I'm guessing that you still have those triggers in the map (you want the game to play like a melee, right?) If that's the case, you need an enemy with buildings.
If it's human vs. human the players may be allied with eachother at the start, so you all just win instantly. You need to make them start as enemies.
Go under the Force settings and uncheck the "Allied", "Allied Victory", and "Shared Vision" boxes for whatever force the humans are in:
