I'm sure you've heard this plenty of times. I've actually had this idea of asking why for a while now, just never got around to it. So it's a basic question. A lot of games that get critisted for this would be: Metroid Prime, Grand Theft Auto, Dynasty Warriors, and some Mario games.
How is that bad? "Yeah man Vice City is ok but it's just more of the same thing as GTA3, GTA3 is a great game though". Isn't there a contradiction in there somwhere. Here's a game that you love, it has a great formula, it works, it's excellent, you were saddened whent he game ended. Then a sequel comes out and people are liek "TOO MUCH THE SAME RAWR". How is that bad, why wouldn't you want more of a great system. I doubt Vice City would do better if you played a Pizza Ninja who goes around town in stealth mode stealing pizzas from people. Along with Metroid Prime and other games. If you liked the first game, why shouldn't you like the next one if it's basically the same thing in an entire new world and story.
It's like a (very expensive) expansion pack. Expansion packs are basically the same thing but a little more content and maybe new story. But with these games you get a whole new world, new things to do, etc. Maybe I'm just missing something?
In my opinion, as long as what is done over and over is done right, it's okay.
I agree. Plus, now adays its pretty hard to make something new with the billions of games out there. Thats why the first game I will probably get for my ds lite (when it coems out in 12 days(ill be first in line in the morning at best buy)) it will probably be mario kart. SKEET SKEET!
Actually, I'd love to play as a Pizza Ninja.

More of the same isn't bad, unless there were bugs and issues in the previous game that aren't fixed. I hate when game developers are lazy and do that...

i Dont think more of the same is Bad, as long as you dont remake it 500 Times like GTA.
Lets go over GTA:
GTA 3: OMG WE'RE RUNNING AROUND STEALING, KILLING, AND SWEARING! SO EXCITING!
GTA 4 Vice City: OMG WE'RE RUNNING AROUND AGAIN WITH A TERRIBLE STORY KILLING AND STEALING!
GTA 5 San Andreas: OMFG WE'RE DOING IT AGAIN! MORE OF THE SAME!!!!!
personally, i hope they dont add more of the same in Kingdom hearts III.
Button mashing is all Good. but its ONLY good for 2 games or so, Make the third different. maybe make it a Turn Based RPG ?

Well by listing them as GTA4 and GTA5 it shows what little you know of the game. There weren't that many features in Vice City, but San Andreas was like a different game. New health system, new aiming system, RPG like elements (Skills for everything), gang territories, airplanes, three new massive islands, no load times, and a crap lot more. I don't see how you can label it as the same thing.
And still, the GTA3 system was very well done, so you didn't answer my question at all on how more of the same is bad. And using capital letters and exclamation marks doesn't make your point. It makes you look stupid.
using all "CAPS"
is supposed to make GTA look retarded, got it memorized fool?
They're angry because they paid 50 dollars of the exact same thing they already had. Would you want to buy a game in a series just better graphics? Probably not. You'd want a new game, to add new innovative features, and stuff.

Your exagerating it too much. It's not the SAME EXACT THING. It's a new storyline, a new character (at times) and more features, and a new world to explore. That's not the same exact thing, that's more of what you liked in the first game. And I can prove my point with any nintendo series. Looks like we have to save Hyrule... again. Time to find bowser and beat him up by jumping around and stomping on heads, again. I can't wait to find Ridley and kill him, again. It's basically the same thing but with better graphics and some new content.
People don't like things that are the same. They want something fresh, new objectives, new stories, new characters, new gameplay, etc. It doesn't have to be drastically different, but Grand Theft Auto seems to be the same a lot. Grand Theft Auto is usually dealing the with mob in a city and you can do all this crime. I hardly ever see people play to do the objectives, but rather play to kill and cause a lot of havoc. Now, if the game had a focus and didnt let you have as much free will, then it would make it easier to have a sequel that people would like just as much. Then again, you can't make the sequel more focused, because then it seems like you're just taking orders, there is no exploring, just like Kingdom Hearts II.
I agree, why would people think that something is too much of the same game but isnt it supposed to be. I mean it has the same name, why change it sooo much, theres no reason too, Making a game with the same name should make it okay for it to be very similar especially if it was a great game GTA3, Vice City, Can Andreas, etc. People should stop complaining and start playing!

Let's take, for example, another beloved game series.
Super Mario Brothers: OMG BOWSER STOLE PRINCESS TOADSTOOL! TIME TO GO SAVE HER!
Super Mario Brothers 3: OMG BOWSER STOLE THE MUSHROOM KING! TIME TO GO SAVE HIM!
Super Mario World: OMG BOWSER STOLE PRINCESS TOADSTOOL AGAIN! TIME TO GO SAVE HER!
Super Mario 64: OMG BOWSER STOLE PRINCESS TOADSTOOL AGAIN AHH SCREW IT!
Yet every one of those games was excellent. Now, I detest GTA, at least every GTA since GTA3. But seriously, that is hypocrisy if I ever saw it.
When you get it right and it's a series with a continous story, it should NOT change drastically. I hated FFX-2, I couldn't even play it. I don't want to play one game a thousand times for all the different ends. I want definitive stories, maybe two or three. But not a hundred. As for, say, Xenosaga II, the staff onboard changed, and it shows. The game is a bit ugly, and it's kinda boring to play. Xenosaga I's battle system was fine, it just needed more variety, not an overhaul. I think they tried to "improve" on things that didn't need improvement. Plus they lamed the story up a bit with some cliched hollywood-esque nonsense. Xenosaga III will, however, go back to the background graphical appearance of Xenosaga and a character designer inbetween Xenosaga I and Xenosaga II.
I'm rather fanatical about Xenosaga I and alot of the changes annoyed me. Plus the new voice actors were all worse to varying degrees. Seriously, Namco needs to get Wilhelm's original voice actor back on board because the guy who did him on Xenosaga II just had no energy. I'll be fine with that.
On that note, I'd like to say that Wilhelm is similiar to Sauron in LotR, by that I mean a villian that is rarely seen (though more often than LotR), around whom the entirety of the story revolves, though in a much more murky, indefinite way.
Xenosaga rules.
Depends what you mean.
Metroid Prime 2's 'new' elements just pissed people off. Damage in the dark world, "ammo" system...
F-Zero GX is, imo, a perfect sequel. Same gameplay. Insanely enchaned graphics, cool new tracks, customization for your vehicles...
Anything you'd want.
SSX 3, for example, is a 'bad' sequel. From SSX tricky to SSX 3, the only good thing is that you can hold tricks. They added plenty of new stuff that no one wants to f**k with.
-Manuals with the board....its a snowboarding game...I don't want a 117X combo from tapping the C stick up whenever i'm not in the air...
-The whole, find the crystals garbage. (At least in, say, metroid prime you get a benefit from getting completion ratios or finding stuff...this is just to say you did it, you get no in-game benefit)
the GTA series, I love 'em all. Except the first one. 2 was silly. 3 was the first like...more serious one, and all the newer 3d ones are just so good its crazy.
Not just for "oh look a hoe watch me shoot here hahahahaha" but the actual gameplay of missions and stuff and the huge worlds and whatnot.
Diablo ==> Diablo 2 = good sequel. Sorta the same gameplay, insane improvements (but still garbage imo, but whatever).
It depends on your style of gaming. Personally, I don't mind more of the same (for the most part). If I like something, why not have more of it ; )
Something that changes from person to person is the "all-new" effect. Playing Mario for the first time has a much stronger effect than playing your second mario.
As humans, we get "used" to things, whether it's routines like breakfast, sleeping, etc.
I don't like sequels in that I believe everyone should always give new things a try. While I might like Soul Calibur II, getting three means I'm missing out on a different experience I could get from another game.
The first couple James Bonds were okay, I mean he sounds cool and gadgets and stuff. Then I realized they are all cash ins with cheap, unbelievable plots, unrealistic girls and oh-so-typical, bad guy is insane characters, then of course James Bond through a million soldiers wins.
For me, I like giving a chance to as many things as possible. I always think that there's something out there waiting to be discovered that I'd love, but I'm just a few steps behind in finding it.
So it really depends on what you value. While a game might have some new additions, gameplay could be the same. Then it comes to replacing the old one with the new one, which makes the first game obsolete. But if you have a game like Mario compared to Zelda, one is about platforming, while another is about puzzle solving. It doesn't replace the other.

Easy there

I'd also like to point out that the same formula for a game with better graphics isn't always better. I still prefer 2D generic platformers over 3D generic platformers.

yea thats great golden...give developers reason to put even less into products. yes you are missing something! people play the first game in a series because its different. now if you make a sequel sure it has to be something like the first to be the same game in the same series but under you logic creators don't need to change anything. just put a new story and new weapons and its good with you?
no thanks. ill take new games over the repeats (gta anyone?)

You seem to be a nintendo fan. They've been making the same game for 20 years now, don't discredit other games that follow same the trends of those that you like. I buy games because they're fun or well done, Guitar Hero was a new concept, never played it. Not planning to anytime soon.
If repeats were so bad, they wouldn't sell. If they didn't sell, game developers would stop making them. Guess what? They are still being made so obviously the People Bashing them have never really played them through (ie, My)Lyon Calling Vice City and San Andreas GTA:4 and GTA:5).
No one is forceing you to play these games, and you probably aren't anyways, so don't hate or bash anything you don't know what your talking about.
And don't get me wrong Ice_Inferno, I like Zelda, but new weapons and a new story is the basis of Zelda. Say this happened. Say a prequel that happens a few years before the events of Legend of Zelda: OoT came out tomorrow. Same weapons, same everything. Maybe the main character was different. Would you buy it? Of course you would. Say the sequel to OoT of time came out tomorrow. Hey, what do you know! It already exists! The only major differences were a time limit, the Masks, and it was in another land. It is the same thing with the GTA series. GTA:3, Vice, San, and Liberty City Stories are all interlinked.
More of the Same can be good and bad.
The thing is a lot of people want to see something amazing and even better than what you just did. You just made a fun game.
It isn't bad if it is the same though as long it was oringally good. Although it will have a higher chance of getting boring quicker. You do the same thing for to long and it just gets boring.....and boring.......and boring.....and boring.... Thats why I quit my last job!
So more of the same when people like the what you just did == good
More of the same when people dislike what you just did == bad
Even better than what you just did and what you just did was great\currently on the market == Amazing
Expansion packs are often to continue the story or make more stories, and if the storys good then there worth it. If they just add in a few weapons and charge ya 20 bucks for what should be an update to the game they can go XXXX themselves.
Like Brood War for Starcraft. Brood War added some units, a tileset. All a reasonable amount. The major thing it added? It continued the Starcraft storyline. It made an insane cliffhanger that just makes you want to know whats gonna happen next. The new units though are very nice and signficantly alter the game and the new tilesets are pretty nice.
I think more of the same is bad. I wouldn't like to have alot of the same thing. All I need is one of something and I'm fine. If I get like 3 copies of the same game, what am I going to do with the two that are left over?
I'm not going to give them away, I payed for them. And I know I won't be using them since I take good care of my disks. So all I need is one.

Actually they didn't like San Andreas because most fans of Grand Theft Auto found it to be a game about the Mob and how it works. The family and disrespect etc. Also the major lisencing of Snoop Dogg, Dr.Dre, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, NWA, Public Enemy, and CYpress Hill, didn't attract any fans of the Rock music from Vice City and the funny talk shows of GTA3. So to put it in blanant terms:
"It was too black"
Seeing as how Liberty City Stories is the number 1 selling game for the PSP and San Andreas is currently the best selling game for Ps2. I doubt that many peopel didn't like San Andreas.
As to basically what everyone is saying. I'm saying MORE OF THE SAME. Not "The same exact game with a different box art". Halo 1 and Halo 2 is more of the same, there are some new guns, maybe a new weapon or two. But it's basically the same exact thing, no one seems to be hating it because of that. It's not like when I say more of the same it's the exact same thing right down to the textures, dialouge, story, etc.
