Staredit Network -> Lite Discussion -> The Ozone Layer's Recovering
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Choerdius on 2006-06-08 at 13:01:13
Over the last few decades, scientists have been tracking the depletion of the ozone layer in the Earth's atmosphere. A large hole still opens up over Antarctica, but ozone levels worldwide have stopped declining. The question is why. The relatively recent reduction of ozone-destroying gasses shouldn't make an improvement so quickly. NASA scientists think that atmospheric wind patterns could be transferring ozone around the planet, helping with the recovery. At this rate, we'll return to 1980 levels between 2030 and 2070.

Which is it? Global warming or a hole in the ozone?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Mp)7-7 on 2006-06-08 at 13:10:45
Not which, their both present! Global Warming caused a hole in the ozone. I havent heard about the hole repairing itself though. Maybe I will look up on it later!

Err, I think global warming is caused by a hole in the ozone layer.

Interesting... But that won't save human kind anyway. We will probably kill ourselves, so don't worry about the ozone wink.gif

Didn't laser printers create ozone or something... or am I just being utterly insane again? eek.gif

What the... Lazer printers are saving the planet?

Oh ya my bad! The ozone was broken open do to pollution from our industries. Burning wood also weakens the ozone layer! Yes the hole in the ozone does help in global warming, because it is letting in more than it is letting out!

Or is it really doing that? The sun is just getting hotter and hotter every year letting in more and more heat to the earth. I was looking in this magazine and its saying that the oceans have been getting higher in level because the poles are melting little by little.

i wasn't aware o3 (ozone) could mutiply. Espesially the reason why the depletion of the ozone layer hasn't been solved and is getting worse.

The sun isn't getting hotting that faster, it's going to be the relative same output for the next 6 billion years. That's an insane amount of time. Ozone is three oxygen molecules bonded together, gases in the atmosphere were seperating oxygen molecules from the main molecule and bonding with them, thus destroying Ozone in the process. remember that oxygen has NOT been on the planet for a few million years of it's history. I believe it was created by gas bonding, I remember reading about the importance of ieron, and how it helped to prevent the various combining gases from turning into a poisonous gas, and instead oxygen.

As to the one that said that he didn't know O[sub]3[/sub] could recover itself
If i remember right there's O[sub]2[/sub] molecules in the Air, because of lots of variables called, heating, sun light in others those O[sub]2[/sub] molecules react with other O[sub]2[/sub] And then it does something like
O[sub]2[/sub] + O[sub]2[/sub] --------> O[sub]3[/sub] + O
The O[sub]2[/sub] molecules react and they "free" one oxygen leaving an Ozone (O[sub]3[/sub])

And Hmm..Ozone layer hole helps in global warming yes, because it lets the direct sunlight to come in our atmosphere and the air pollution that caused the hole does not let that light go out so it gets literally stuck and it converts to heat, which is what produces global warming

Oh and i find it great that the wind patterns are moving the O[sub]3[/sub] and that helps to recover the ozone hole, Yay for the good environment!

Oxygen was first introduced into the atmosphere by photosynthetic cyanobacteria which began converting the CO[sub]2[/sub] in the atmosphere to O[sub]2[/sub] between 2.5 and 3 billion years ago.

Now, if only the US would get with the program, we might make some real improvement.

Yes. If the temperature of the oceans keep rising this could change the currents of the ocean and the currents are what controls the waether patern. Have you guys seen The Day After Tomorrow, this is what this theory was made by!

Laser printers, algae exposed to radiation, water treatment facilities, etc.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the next hippie agenda.

If the hole does recover it's self i think many people might be happier.
