Storyline / Introduction

The year was 1937, and the Nazi party had risen to power within Germany. With July came Japan's undeclared war upon China. In 1938, Germany acquired a large portion of Czechoslovakia from the French and British while it took Austria for itself. By March 1939 it had taken the rest of Czechoslovakia while the League of Nations watched patiently. Finally, the Allies' fears were confirmed. On 1 September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. France and Britain declared war on the Germany and its ally Italy, and the world is once again at war. However, the United States rests uneasily, not wanting to be caught up in the European war. How long can they afford to stay out of this conflict that spanned from France to Japan?

I thought this would be a WWII map like mine, but now I see this is really a board game. Nice. tongue.gif

It is a World War II board game. I'm trying to adapt it to feel like the board game in a StarCraft map with a few twists of my own.

I worked on European terrain a bit today. I have the continent roughed out (though Turkey/Iran/Iraq/Russia need a bit more roughing out), and Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom are completely done. France is nearly complete, and I plan on completing the countries from Germany and Austria to Poland, the Ukraine, and Greece soon. After that I'm thinking I'll do the Eastern United States, Norway, and finally Russia. After the top half of the map is completed (it's split up like The Final Hour), I'll move onto the Pacific half of the map.

So when do you think you will finish your map? I'd like to enjoy it with some of my friends biggrin.gif

The board games were tremedously fun, and I'm sure that you will do an awesome job making this map. I look forward to playing it.

Alright, you all seem so excited about this map ha ha. Well, I finished the terrain and unit placement for the following nations:

Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Austria (and those nations around Greece), and Italy. I'm thinking that there will be around 800 units for the Atlantic "theatre" (what I'm calling the top and bottom halves of the map now) and around 400 units for the Pacific theatre (only about half because it's mostly water there you know!).

Think we could get a glimps of what the terrain looks like??

Wewtage for teh Axis & Allies!

I'll probably be changing terrain around a bit once I test it that first time. My desktop is 1680x1050 widescreen, so imagine how much larger it is in StarCraft running at 640x480! It makes for some changes to perception, to say the least. Sadly to say, this isn't going to be the level of The Battle for Middle-Earth terrain.

I like board games.

Actually, here's an idea that I posted in DLK's WWII thread. There will be an army limit, but there won't be a leader board for army size. Instead, the leader board will probably be for victories, or rather number of units killed. Maybe I'll even put in the income per turn for a leader board, which I'll explain shortly. For the army size, I'll be implementing a simple trigger that displays a text message, something like, "You are near to reaching the maximum number of [insert troop type] that your nation can support." Now, how do I determine the amount of troops that a certain nation can support? Quite easily, in fact. Here is my upkeep system:

.:Axis & Allies Upkeep System:.

1. Cities determine, through minerals (currency) and vespene gas (refined oil), the amount of munitions and gas that can support your army. These resources shall keep your troops supplied with weapons, food, etc. Once you have more troops than the upkeep level you attain with cities, resources shall be pulled from your stockpiles (the actual mineral and vespene gas amounts that show up in game). Once you reach zero resources of a certain type, and your upkeep level isn't high enough to keep up with the amount of troops you have, units will start to be decommissioned, and you will be refunded a small part (1/4) of the cost it took to create the unit in the first place. Also, the strain on your upkeep level shall also go down. This is a universal troop type upkeep.

2. However, it is not enough to keep your units well supplied. They must also be well maintained. The three non-infantry types of unit creation centers (factories, airfields, and ports) shall determine the amount of troops of each of these categories - armor, aircraft, and ships - you can maintain. Infantry is pretty versatile and can survive without "maintenance" if you will, so I've decided not to make barracks a requirement for this upkeep. If you have more troops of a certain type than you can handle, you will be refunded a large part (3/4) of the cost it took to create the unit originally, and that unit shall be decommissioned.

I know this will work, but I really must write it out on paper first.

your upkeep systems sounds really cool. i like the stockpile and maintenance ideas
Report, edit, etc...Posted by -BW-Map_God on 2006-06-17 at 03:03:59
I think its cool that your making an effort to create a World War II game with a board game feel as that hasn't really been specifically done yet. You might want a more distinguishing name though as there already are some Axis and Allies maps... granted there nothing like the board game and not that great. Maybe Axies and Allies BRD (for Board, Board without the vowels) or something.

I agree with Zeratul101 the upkeep system sounds really cool and your stockpile and maintenance ideas are good now you just have to make yourself code it all tongue.gif .
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2006-06-20 at 00:20:30
I'm thinking that I'm going to modify that upkeep system a bit. Each city has a base production value, but as the armies start to add up, money will be taken away for upkeep I'm thinking once every five-ten seconds. I'm not really sure how I'm going to do this system. It will probably be a combination of what's most effective and least time consuming of the options I have available.

ADDITION:
Yay for support! I now have Britain, France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Greece, Ukraine, Russia, Turkey, and the Middle-East done. Tomorrow I'll be doing Africa, Norway, Sweden, and Finland, and that'll round out the Europe theatre (besides Canada and the United States).
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Ryu on 2006-06-20 at 01:43:21
you should add Czechslovakia happy.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2006-06-21 at 00:30:32
I have Prague as a city.

ADDITION:
Alright, here's the list of completed terrain and unit placement locations:

Eastern and Western United States
Eastern and Western Canada
United Kingdom
Ireland
Norway
Sweden
Finland
Western USSR
France
Germany
Denmark (and Greenland, part of Denmark)
Poland
Ukraine
Czechoslovakia
Austria
Greece
Hungary
Romania
Italy
Spain
Switzerland
Turkey
Georgia
Azerbaijan
Lebanon
Syria
Iraq
Iran
Israel
Mediterranean Islands
Egypt
Libya
Tunisia
Algeria
Morocco
Japan

Tomorrow I hope to finish up Asia and the Pacific islands, and then I can start triggering! The biggest thing about this type of terrain is not about making it pretty, but functionality and proportionality. It's nothing too fancy, and I'd have to say Russia and the countries on its western boundary are titled a little bit, but it would be really hard to edit them, I doubt anyone will really care or even notice, and it doesn't infringe whatsoever on the experience. I'm trying to keep pre-placed units at or below a total of 1200. If I can, I'll try to cut down to 1150, but I doubt I'll be able to go beneath that.
