Staredit Network

Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> Cant play map as UMS?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by mutalisk46802 on 2006-06-18 at 18:21:17
Im making this starcraft map and ive been using Starforge the whole time so far. Right now all I've been doing is the terrain and I'm not even halfway done with that. Anyway all I have is Player 1 (Terran, Human) Player 2 (Protoss, Comp) and Player 1 is on force 1, Player 2 is on force 2. I made a victory and defeat trigger, both are for player 1 and 2 and both basically say that if current player commands 20 of "a unit" then he dies. Then I did the exact same thing, but with different unit and made it so they win. Also in starforge if i go to description, and put something there, then click Ok, it doesnt stay there. Ill click description again adn its gone... Also I CAN play the map in melee in single player but if I play UMS, it just goes to the briefing (there is none), i click ok and then it says"error loading scenario file".Then it just goes back to the main menu of starcraft (where you click singel player, multiplayer, campaign editor, or exit). Also I can open it in Starforge and SCMDraft with no problems at all, but if i try to open it in SCXE or staredit it just says that it was unable to open it and says to make sure that the file is a valid starcraft data file(but when that error message pops up I can see the minimap of my map, so it DID in fact open it). Its got NO protection on it whatsoever though. Please can anyone help me out? If you want I can email it to you but you have to promise not to steal my idea.

if it crashes u at briefing it might not be a map error then again it could be but w.e id personally do something about that maybe transfer ur triggers and terrain to a different map (maybe the map got corrupted sum how im no expert) and if that doesnt work listen to whoever else makes a post and if that still doesnt work try reinstalling (only takes like 5 minutes anyways :s) and if that still doesnt work buy a new cd tongue.gif (thats like $10) so dont worry :S

Well it doesnt crash me at the briefing, its right when i click OK during the briefing, it brings me back to the Starcraft main menu.
Also I saved the map as a different name, it still didnt work.
I also played a different random map (Path Defense) as UMS in single player, and it worked just fine except I wont at the start because no one else is there blushing.gif
I did the 2 triggers I have (victory, defeat) in less than 5 minutes so I dotn care about them.
Its a 256x256 and the little terrain ive already done took a while but I dont know how it could be labeled as "unplayable".
I have no sprites/unused units/anything that would crash starcraft.
Any idea why I cant do descriptions???
Any idea why I can play it as melee but cant play it as UMS???
Im using Starforge PLUS if that helps, not normal Starforge.
Want me to email you the map so you can see whats wrong with it?
Any answers to any problems would be greatly appreciated.

You have a computer player in the same force as a human player.

My forces are as follow
Force 1-->Player 1 (Human)
Force 2-->Player 2(Comp)
Force 3-->Empty
Force 4-->Players 3 through 8, all inactive
I also played the map in b.net and it did the exact same thing, just brung me back to the main menu of starcraft when i clicked ok in the briefing (well actually the screen was black like it was loading then it just took me back to the main menu with an error screen i already told you about)

Sometimes regular units corrupt a map (not sure why). Try taking away some units and see if it helps.

Oh. Must've read it wrong... Did you protect it using Starforge? That messed up one of my maps before.

ok, the only 2 units i have are player 1's start location and player 2's start location, and if they corrupt maps then helpsmilie.gif
I also said it has NO protection whatsoever, when i saved it with starforge as about 5 different names they were all labeled as "brood war" and "staredit compatible". Im going to try making a map with start locations in starforge and then in scmdraft then in SCXE and see if starforge just saved the map unplayable.

copy everything to a new map, dont just rename it...

I made a really quick map that i did the exact same thing in as my map that wont work as UMS except for all the terraining, and it has 0 triggers(I also made it in Starforge PLUS also). Also i COULD edit the description, it actually stayed there when i hit ok and it worked just fine...
A of s t are you saying I should make a new map, and just redo all the terraining i did in my other map because that would take a while...
I just tried saving the map as a different name once again, but with no triggers and of course it didnt work cry.gif

No He's not, he is telling you to copy terrain in stardraft and past it onto a new map then just save the triggers and load them onto that new map, that should probably fix it, just be happy that your triggers aren't messed up.(Although you didn't have many so it wouldn't be so bad...)

Ok, i copied all the 256x256 terrain in SCMDraft, and pasted it (took a while to get it pasted right in the dead center) onto a completely new map and saved it in SCMDraft, also before saving it i put start locations, made P1 human and P2 a comp and seperated them into differnt forces. I played the map and it worked fine. Then i saved that map as another name, opened it in starforge, changed 4 tiles of terrain, saved it as the same name. Then I played the map and it worked. WTF happened to my first map then...

This leads me to say, wow Starforge really blows when it comes to reliability... thumbdown.gif
Im just going to continue the map in SCMDraft.

Seems like a complicated problem.. complicated enough that I can't figure out the reason based off from simple stuff you say, I have a feeling. My advice is just to avoid starforge. SCMdraft can do everything starforge is capable of, and doing isolated stuff like triggers or terrain only won't mess up your map. This advice doesn't fix your problem, but it can prevent future ones.

Would you possible post the map?

Starforge is only good for making terrain. Hope you learned from this experience.

The trigger and mission breifing editors are so buggy... it's not worth touching unless you know what you are doing.

I suggest making your triggers and breifings in xtra editor.

Yea, to fix it just select the entire map, create a brush from that selection, load up another new map in the same tileset, open up the custom brushes again, and then paste.

Either that or you can open up that really old program called GUEdit and extract terrain. Ehh.. >_>

Actually, Starforge's ISOM sucks. And, you can do triggers in SCMD using classic trigedit. And the briefing... well, I actually do briefings with SF, only because I have "bad stuff" in the map and Xtra will delete it pinch.gif.
