The 45 Minute Mod Making Contest!

Description

Welcome to the 45 Minute Mod Making Contest! I was bored, and seeing as how everyone is doing 30 minute Map Making contests, I figured I'd do this. However, since mods tend to be a tad more time consuming, I'm giving you 45 minutes.

Rules and Specifications

1) Mods must be completed within the 45 minutes provided. Late entries will NOT be accepted.
2) Previous data MAY NOT BE USED!!!! That means no pre-made graphics. And don't worry, it won't be hard to tell.
3) Eh... If I think of anything or if something obvious is pointed out, it'll go here.

Judging

The judging will be done by Voyager and I. No more judges will be accepted.
The maps will be judged on:

Complexity
Could your mod be made by a three-year old? I know you don't have much time, but cmon. Try to get beond simple weapon edits.
This will be worth: 5 Points

Content
Exactly how much did you get done? Did you edit a marine, or did you screw around with the entire terran race?
This will be worth: 5 Points

Glithiness
How well does your mod run?
This will be worth: 5 points

Originality
This is a big one. Do something new, that we haven't seen before.
This will be worth: 10 points

Fun
This is obviously the most important part. Score well on this, and you know you're doing well.
This will be worth: 15 points

This leads to a possible total of 40 points.

Prizes

Finally, the prizes. If anyone donates, I'll raise them, but otherwise here they are:
1st Place: 200 minerals!
2nd Place: 100 minerals!
3rd Place: 20 minerals!

Note: Gave my minerals to Ian so he could get a name change, and you might not get your prize right away tongue.gif

Note: WON THE LOTTERY! Prizes back up.

Pending permission from Voy, an additional prize may be awarded to 1st place...

Date

DATE WILL BE DETERMINED DEPENDING ON SCHEDULES OF JUDGES AND CONTESTENTS

Contestants

1) EzDay281
2) IanMM
3) Farty[MM]
4) Darkomni

Actually only (U) is hosting them. That's where it came from if you didn't know. I find 45 minute modding contest kinda too short and pointless because you aren't going to learn too much from it.

Reasoning for 30 minute mapping contests:
http://www.staredit.net/index.php?showtopic=30823

The goal of our contests is not to give people glory or prizes, but rather it is for self-benefit, self-awareness, and self-improvement. We may give out prizes when we deem have people learned enough that they may produce a glorious map within the 30 minutes provided. It will be a strong motivating factor to learn rather than what most people are are doing, which is nothing.

Pfft.

The point of this: For some Mod Makers to actually produce something, to have a good time, and possibly win some minerals. It also gets us to think quickly and creatively, and learn to use the tools provided more efficiently. (Plus it'll add to our forum % tongue.gif) Also, your contests weren't always about that. Look at how the first contest was made. Boredom. Just like this one.

Us mod makers have the freedom to do what we like, and so that's what we'll do. smile.gif

Whoa..... 45 minutes to make an entire mod... that's just insane... how is that even possible? It takes almost 2 minutes to test each modification you make... and even longer to proof everything and balance out the changes you made... even then... how would the mod be useful? I would imagine changes in weaponry and damage and types of units... but how would someone apply these changes within 45 minutes? Wouldn't this contest just judge how fast you can change everything into nothingness? tongue.gif I would make the marines shoot siege tank blasts that do 99999 damage and zerglings do splash damage across the entire screen when they attack and call it a day. biggrin.gif

Not being able to use previous data means that you would have to recreate an entire sprite that has 8 angles of static animation as well as it's movement and animations for it's movements... do you know how long that takes?... just making one sprite is enough to fullfill 45 minutes... well that's my mod... a 45 minute slap job for a marine change.

This quick contest thing is sure spreading everywhere.

Good luck I guess...

1 hour would see a bit more fair........ but 1 hour 30 minutes would be perfect.

I've done it before, you can actually get a fair bit accomplished. The thing is, everyone always things of mods being Total Conversions. Obviously, you can't do that in such a short time period, so you have to stick to modifying a few units.

I really don't see the point in having these contests, no-one notices them before the contest is over

also, if you tell people about them ahead of time, how do you know they won't start early? confused.gif

I trust most of the members on SEN. And with some, we'll be able to tell. And yes, its not much time, but I'm not really expecting much.

Two minutes to test each modification? More like one minute, and, even if people say not to, simply test your changes in batches -- that's what I do, and because I have a pretty good idea of what crashes or not, all I'm looking for is whether or not my changes do exactly what I want.
As for balance, as he stated, it's not a TC -- while balance is a good thing, it's not the most important ever.
No mod is complete without iscripting, and iscripting hardly takes longer than dat editing, and I'm one of those guys that still uses ICE, instead of IceCC.
Okay, the two edits you listed, they would take about a minute to complete, two if you're for some reason testing them. You've got anywhere from fourty to twenty times that, and most of the time in making those changes is something that you won't have to spend again for every unit, just the opening of DatEdit and such.
45 minute mod is quite possible. =P
