If you do play PGTour, prepare to lose. A lot. It'll take a long time to get good enough to compete with these people.

Practice is the only thing I can say, melee takes a long time to get good at. Most noob mistakes are not building fast enough, building to many buildings at one time or not having enough ppl on reasources. Practice

PGTour is a great way for decent players to improve significantly (though it gets quite boring). I'd suggest starting off by playing several 1v1s and 2v2s on whichever gateway you prefer. It's best to play with a group of friends who are around your level. If not, playing pubbies 1v1 LT is not the worst thing in the world.. That's how I started off, and once I started to win the majority of games I begun to play at PGTour.
If you really want to improve, the fastest way is to choose and stick with one race. I've always been a random player, as I feel like I'm missing two thirds of the game by only playing one race, but it's your choice. Right now I'm at C-/C PGTour level, still much room for improvement. If you want to learn the basics the best way would be to watch pro replays. Pretty much everything else comes by practicing. You could always try posting replays if you want people to post helpful feedback (I'd gladly do so).

dont start learning how to play melee by going to pgt. that wont help. watching pro reps shows you how to replicate strategies, thus showing you how to think in a game, but doesnt give the best training.
start by playing closer friends, or just play others on bnet, watch replays of your losses and wins, etc.
practice makes perfect (but never quite perfect)

My advice: most of the ten-year old brats on Battle.net who think they are really good just have good reflexes. They play fastest maps and Big Game Hunters, where they have a ridiculous amount of rescources. Just play against them, preferably as Zerg, on any other map and watch them get confused.
