Staredit Network -> Website Feedback, Bugs & Discussion -> These "depression" topics...

Seriously...

What is up with these people making "depression" topics? And since you're posting it here on SEN do you know what you're asking for? And apparently this site (particularly the "other" forums) consist majorly of people that are young (maturity wise, not agewise), I think the answer is obvious.

Particularly, threads likethis are what I'm talking about. Ok it may or may not be the most serious issue in the world. If you have some soothing words to say, fine. If not, fine. But just because you don't have anything "good" to say doesn't mean you have to say some stupid crap. But unfortunately, we can never correct these people.

So really, I really do NOT think Staredit.net is the place to post your life problems or anything. If you truly need help, talk with your parents, your friends, your teachers, counselors, etc. All of them are 100x better than seeking help from people here on SEN. Infact, you'll probably get belittlement rather than encouragement here.

Side note: Keep all of the "life sucks too bad" and "your problems are insignificant" posts out of this topic.

Personally, I wouldn't get into it.

I agree. If you're seeking help here on SEN you're most likely going to end up hating your life even more.

Most people on SEN just say some stupid crap just to get there two cents in. And when they say it, it isn't even helpfull. You're just going to end up hating everything even more or over again.

And again, if you really need help. Don't look to the internet for help, look for friends that you can talk to. Talk to your parents, there going to always be there for you no matter how much you may think they hate you or dislike you.

It sounds that he really isn't in a position to talk to his parents. Personally iv had some issue with depression and nothing really helps expect to tuff it up. But nice encouragement is always good, but in SEN you get crap as Cruzo said. And This sounds like some racist stuff. And as DT said I feel sorry for that mom. But personally I think to much people spend to much time on the internet. And for others it seems like there family is just messed up. So pretty much never ask for help on SEN if you have personal life problem, unless hes your best starcraft buddy or something...

So racist, talking about asians. Wow. How amazingly racist.

This is sending a great message to the overall attitude of SEN:
"If you have serious problems and need help, we don't care, don't post here"
I think your pointing to the wrong problem.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by dumbducky on 2006-06-23 at 21:12:48
You can't change the attitude of SEN. If you can't fix the source problem, fix the reactionary problem. It's like the cold. There is no cure for it because there are so many kinds, so just treat the symptoms.

Everybody looks towards changing the community at SEN, but no one is willing to change them self.

Seriously its a gaming board, you dont go to a gaming board and ask for help. Espeically in such stuff like depression, I mean it seems like half the people at SEN are deperessed in someway. I think all we can do is just not ask for these kinds of help in SEN, go see someone else they will a lot more help.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2006-06-24 at 01:07:21
I certainly agree with MA, but I don't really see what there is to discuss. I wouldn't reccomend SEN as a place to seek emotional comfort, but that doesn't make it okay for anyone to attack a member the way some did in that topic (warns were definitely handed out).

You can feel sympathetic toward him. You can feel sympathetic towards the mother as I did. You can think he is an insignificant wimp. But if you do, keep it to yourself.

It's not that you should ask people of a gaming board for help; it's that you shouldn't seek help from a board full of young people (maturity wise, not necessarily age.)

And also, this board has kind of departed from being a gaming board now. Most people are participating in the "other" forums now, which have nothing to do with starcraft.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MasterJohnny on 2006-06-24 at 02:17:48
yes starcraft has gotten boring

if someone is seeking help i do not think sen should just say dont post here
Report, edit, etc...Posted by dumbducky on 2006-06-24 at 09:09:33
Starcraft isn't boring, it's just non-starcraft related forums update faster than starcraft forums.

How about we put a thing in light discussion saying that posting topics about being depressed will not help you.

Nobody reads those. It's more effective to lock every one of them.

And what did you expect from a site, where most of the members are not so mature as you would want ? It's quite normal, I think.

Internet life is getting more and more important for some people, and replaces some part of the relationships. And you know, most of the people feel better when they explain their problem to others. So particularly SEN gets some part of that.

If you ask me, I wouldn't worry about topics like that.

Exactly what I'm saying. You can't expect much from this site. Sure if you want to share problems with someone, do it with like your parents or something; at least with something you know is trustworthy and will try to help you in every way.
It's not that I'm worrying about it; it's that I highly suggest people in the future not to post their problems here based on what's happened in the past "depression" topics. Because first, you're not going to get much help from people you don't know and have never met in person. And secondly, many people would take your situation extremely lightly and maybe hurt you more than help you.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Cruzo on 2006-06-24 at 23:51:33
I think we can all agree that you can't get much help from many people here at this site. 90% of this site are teens between the ages of 10-15. And that's not the kind of people to look to for help.

So basically, just don't ask for help or even complain. People will either end up making fun of you or just laugh at you because they don't have the same problems as you. They just don't know how you feel.

This is the problem with modern day society. People turn to the internet and other forms of comunication instead of talking to someone face to face. If people actualy started to go out and face eachother more often then these things would never happen.

i really dont think that people should put depressing stuff or need in help in life.... if your going to do that then posted it on Dr. Phil website, not here. there are many video gamers out there that dont give a damn about your life.

I agree that SEN probably isn't the most opportune place to post your problems. Most of the community here probably couldn't care less about each other (and I don't mean intimately, just on a natural, human-to-human level). It's sad to say that's true, and I most certainly don't think members should post lines like "boohoo cry me a river." If people feel the need to post their ups and downs on here, I believe they should feel welcome to. After all, SEN might be extremely important on a social level to many of our members. We would do well to remember that. And I'll reiterate what's been said: you don't have to post something nice, but if you don't, don't post anything at all. We're not asking for absolute charity from everyone - just a little bit of decency and common courtesy. Then again, this topic really isn't a problem as those types of topics aren't too numerous yet. Lastly, even if you believe that those topics are meritless, it gives you no right to put that person down. Most of those posts in that topic MA posted were flames.

Even though the general age of SEN seems to be declining, the maturity seems to be rising (as I see less and less putting up with flaming). I like this trend. smile.gif

I wish. Putting up with flaming is a staff thing, not a member thing.

That's probably because before there was no flamming that had stuff to be done about it.

The internet is the best way of communication. That's why. There can't be any possible mis-translation.

Also, it looks like you're using this forum as a form of communication, right?
