Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> Starting race for computers in UMS
Report, edit, etc...Posted by InsaneExecutor on 2006-07-05 at 21:08:18
A friend of mine and I are working on a joint mapping project. We are disabling air units and basing it in the ice tile set, with the plot being that there is a blizzard so no one can fly. Aside from this, and a few other triggers to keep Overlords from leaving their bases, the map will progress as a normal melee.
The only noticeable problem we've had is with the computers. We have tried everything we can think of, but we can not get computers into the fray without giving them a set race and pre-placed buildings. We want them to have random start locations and user-selectable races, just like in a normal melee, but nothing works. Any suggestions on fixing this, if it is at all possible?

Explain why you have to preplace them. Although I assume it's having to do with the overlord control scheme.

When making a UMS map, you MUST place buildings for a computer, or else the game will end automatically when it begins. The game will spawn the base building and four workers on the start location for a human player, but I can't figure out how to make it do that for the computers as well.

For random start location, just check the "random start location" box in their force, then over each start location, put one of any unit, just so the map can detect which player is where after you start.

For a selectable race, just make it selectable at the start of the game via a civilian and beacons, then add a trigger so that the game won't end until a selection has been made and then the computer gets killed.

I don't know the extent of your trigger knowledge, so I've got no idea if I'm making any sense to you or not... ermm.gif

try running an ai script, or go to settings of ur map and change that around, where it says :
race: terran/protoss/zerg
player: computer/user selectable/rescuable/human
and those other stuff...

Thanks for all the help, much appreciated. One last thing to be cleared, though: Is there any specific AI script in the triggers menu that will spawn the Nexus/CC/Hatchery and workers?

Oh, by the way, I'm a girl tongue.gif

I think I'm the only one here who has a method that they know works...

...the problem is that I may be the only one you can't comprehend. disgust.gif

Don't worry, I can understand it well enough, it just takes some chewing around first. I haven't been working triggers for that long, so I don't know them all immediately.

but of course, the name wasn't taken yet, so it means I am the only one. Backstory for it comes mainly from my liking for Photon Cannons.
