Well my problem is that when I place a unit and then I save the game then i try playing it on the map the units don't seem to appear

Check the following;
[]Start locations are placed
[]Randomize start locations is unchecked
[]You're playing under 'Use Map Settings'
[]Start locations are placed

It's probably that you aren't using Use Map Settings. It could also be that the player that controls the units is a human slot with noone in it.

1. place start locaiotns for ALL players since ur new...
2. play under usemapsettings
3. take off the random start location for the players in the forces log
( the box with a flag in it )
4. and be in the right player. dont move down a player into player 3 or 4 when un want to be player 1
