Albedo Online

Well I started this RPG about a year ago but then decided to take a break from Starcraft.  You can view the old production topic here.

Basicaly what i'm going for is a series of maps where you can save your character in one map and use it in another.  The map i'm working on right now is called "Albedo Online: The Dawn" which is the first map of the storyline.  I'm not sure exactly how many maps the storyline will consist of as i'm comming up with the story as I go along, but there will be other non-storyline maps aswell like for example a dueling map.  The non-storyline maps will generaly be played just for fun although there may be special items you can get from them to used in the storyline maps for side-quests and such.

Specifacations :

Players : 5
Tileset : Jungle
Map Size : 128x128
Estimated File Size : 350kb
Estimated Release : August 2006

Features :

The Ability to save your character:
In every Inn you will be able to save your character, when you do this you will be given a 15 number long code that will save your experience, gold, class, your weapon, your armor, your progress in the story, and two items from your inventory.  I've added some security to each code in order to prevent people from looking at the triggers and figuring out what the best codes are, but I won't say exactly what that is.

9 Classes:
The 9 classes that will be available are: Archer, Alchemist, Mage, Druid, Paladin, Cleric, Thief, Summoner, and Warrior.  Each class has 5 skills and nine levels of weapons and armor which are all obtained in a different way.

Gameplay :

The combat will be fairly simple, just run around attacking enemies while you cast spells.  Though, how you play the game is up to you and the class you choose.  Some classes rely on stealth such as the thief while others are strictly support like the cleric.  Some will be also be built specificaly for solo play like the paladin and then there's your basic team classes like the warrior and mage.

Screenshots :

Character Saving [progress]10[/progress]
Quests [progress]5[/progress]
Terrain [progress]100[/progress]
Skills [progress]5[/progress]
Items [progress]15[/progress]

There's alot more information on the classes, some screenshots, and more in the old production thread: http://www.staredit.net/index.php?showtopic=18606&hl=

Thx biggrin.gif. The map with the loading system your refering to is this one I believe, as for reading about it in a magazine.... what confused.gif. As far as i'm aware there's no game called Albedo. Albedo is a character in the Xenosaga series on the PS2 though aswell as a term in meterology, but neither of those things have anything to do with this map.

No Elf Ranger? Awww... Anyhow.. Good Luck on your Project ( And Make the Druid perfect plase.. happy.gif )
Report, edit, etc...Posted by RiShiN.rK on 2006-07-12 at 12:47:48
Yes, the combat system is RTC and as far as casting spells go it's all done by bringing a unit to a beacon, I personaly don't like unloading from dropships or building units as it can be a bit confusing for a first-timer. And nope, no elf ranger, all of the user controled units will be of the human race aswell as the NPCs in towns. Your common MMORPG races such as orcs, goblins, and elves will be in the series but will usualy be enemies.

Heres some more information on the classes...
QUOTE(Class Information)
Warrior:
Unit: Zealot
Skills: Damage to Enemies

Thief:
Unit: Dark Templar
Skills: Sneaking and Damage to Enemies
More Information: Thieves will only be detectable by tourches scattered around the map in areas enemies are most likely to be.  The Thief will have two stealth skills, one creates a decoy to lure units away from tourches and the other allows the Thief to put out the tourches for a little while.

Archer:
Unit: Ghost
Skills: Scouting and Ranged Damage to Enemies

Mage:
Unit: Hero High Templar
Skills: Dispelling Magic and Magic Damage

Alchemist:
Unit: Archon
Skills: Transmutation
More Information: The Alchemist will be able to transmute items into creatures, the better the item the more powerfull the creature.

Summoner:
Unit: Dark Archon
Skills: Summoning Spirits

Paladin:
Unit: Firebat
Skills: Self Healing and Damage to Enemies

Druid:
Unit: Hydralisk
Skills: Minor Healing and Damage to Enemies (likely to change)
More Information: I'm not completly sure what i'm going to do with the druid at this time.

Cleric:
Unit: Medic
Skills: Major Healing

Seems kinda D2ish.
Got any storylines?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by RiShiN.rK on 2006-07-14 at 11:25:06
Ya it's very D2ish I guess and yes there will be a story, but i'm not quite sure what the complete story will be so far as i'm comming up with it as I go along. As for Druids getting a boost in the forest... that does sound like a rather good idea and i'll consider using it happy.gif.

Thanks for the positive feedback everybody and sorry for nost posting anything for the past 3 days, i've been working on converting the character data to a code for those three days and I messed something up real bad. So, i've decided to delete everything most of those 3 days of work. I'm also deciding to re-do just about everything (especialy the terrain) and just take it slow this time to make this map the best I could make it.

I don't plan to finish this map in time to enter it into the rpg contest which doesn't really matter much to me anymore. This map will be my masterpiece and, unlike all the crummy maps i've released in the past, will finaly show people what I can really.

The first thing i'm going to be re-doing is the terrain, i'll post screenshots in a few days when i'm finished.

The map size -- 128x128 -- seems a bit small. Are all the fighting/exploration areas compacted?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by RiShiN.rK on 2006-07-27 at 00:22:17
The complete explorable area is 128x60 with a town in the middle that's about 80x20. All the combat will take place in this area and parts of the area are blocked off by DT walls which are opened up as you progress through the story.

A few people i've tested with have told me it's just way too small but I feel certain that I can do all that I want to do with such limit space and have the map loaded with action.

some parts look good and it may be good but the first thing that came to my mind was "will this be any different from the other noob rpg's made today unlike Rush or Crescent Dyne" and without being offensive im not entirely sure it will be the save systems arnt hard its just lots of triggers the whole unit thing isnt hard either so w.e good luck on this and prove me wrong biggrin.gif

Gee a small map? Ah well long as game play good all that matters. Would we be fighting in same area or alone and only in boss fights same area?

All the fighting will take place in the 128x60 area, there's no little portion of the map you teleport to to fight the units or anything like that.

As for what will be different about this RPG, for one, the the character save system. I know it's not really that hard to pull of, but still no one has ever successfully completed a map with a character save system to my knowledge (i am aware TuxedoTemplar has tried though).

Second, I'm trying to make it so that the player has as much control over the way he/she wants to play as possible. Like I said before I'd be doing this through the players choice of class, some classes will be designed to excel in certain categories of play (team play, solo, and stealth). Of course just because a class is good in one category doesn't mean it can't play another catagory.

To put it simply, I'm making this as much like an MMORPG as I possibly can. If you ever played an MMORPG you'll notice that some classes are more geared towards one style of play, but that doesn't stop people from making a melee wizard or something crazy along those lines. I'll also be having tons of little side quests and hidden quests here or there just like all MMORPGs.

I didn't mention this before but I reserved 1 digit of the code for choices you make in the game. Further along the road I'll also allow players to choose a good or an evil path and from that game on there will be both a good and evil part for each installment. Players will also have a opportunity to switch sides again at certain parts of the story.
