I've just come up with an idea, as stupid as it may sound, and I was thinking.. since I don't like doing massive amounts of triggers and having to deal with all the bugs and such, maybe I (or anybody) could make a map with just terrain, with only a basic genre in mind, and someone else builds their own game off of that.
Say you want to make an rpg, but don't know what to put in it. I could get a really vague idea of what you wanted with what size, and I'll make the terrain, and you make the map/plot/events around the terrain built for you. It might be able to spread your creativity on what to put in with what you have in a map, instead of making something completely from scratch.
Opinions? Yay or Nay?
I think this is a great idea for map makers like me, who is more than capable with triggers, but lacks talent in designing terrain. I have plans for making my seventh RPG after my current map in production, Poker.
I can't properly express my disdain for this idea. You are probably no good at terrain either. You're really not proposing anything except to make subpar terrain for someone else's subpar triggers. If you can't do both I highly doubt you can do one or the other well.
i see your point Desperado, but do you have to think in such a negative manner? also, it is not fair to judge others without seeing their work. for all you know, he is better than you at your terrain. however, im not suggesting he is.
i think what Desperado was trying to say, is that you should learn to make a complete map, including triggers as well as the terrain, so that you benefit from all the credit. i still think it is a good idea to team up though, as map making can cost you alot of time and effort. splitting the roles is a good idea, if you are organized and communicate well.
The biggest problem about doing generic terrains for other people is just that, the terrains would be generic, and would not properly fit with each map they were made for.
I know how to make a complete map.. It's just the fact that I lose attention in the map while doing all of the triggers, and debugging them in the process. I admit, I'm not great at making terrain, but I like to think I'm just a little better than average.. most of the time.
And I never said this was a good idea.
And Rantent, I know what you mean, but I was thinking that the map they create is based around the pre-made terrain. It could be weird as freak, so they would have to think of ideas of what the terrainer was thinking and so that it fits the terrain, and it could turn out completely different.. in a good, or horrid way. Basically a hit or miss.
im sorry, i misphrased the statement;

you should learn to make a complete map
i honestly think its a good idea to share the work with an ally, because there is alot of time in creating good maps, even if the terrain you submit is just a draft template, it is always of help to see something with potential.
the only useful purpose that i can see for making a map out of generic terrain would be for a mapping contest.
if you need terrain for your map, you might as well 'sub-contract' the work out and get the terrain that matches your triggers, instead of vice versa
Wow, Weasel. I am quite the opposite. My attention span cannot last when making terrain, so I usually just make defenses where I dont have to worry about it, but I would like to make a good RPG...

Me too. Sometimes I get really into the terrain, most of the time I start the first phase of making my map (for me, terrain) and then get bored out of my mind & trash the idea. Damn my low attention span! But, I suppose I'm divided...I agree with Desperado that it's better to make everything about your map, because it shows what kind of map maker you are. I, for one, seem to be better at triggers, so my terrain tends to be, as Desperado puts it, "subpar." Enlisting help could be seen as a sign of weakness in map making, I suppose. However, I also think it's good to work as a team and collaborate. I think I'd enlist your help if I had any ideas for a map...
But GENERIC terrain isn't what I'd be looking for. I think that, rather than making generic terrain, you should custom make the terrain for whoever wants it, like Zeratul said.

Personally i like the idea cause i hate terrian some of the time. lol So yea i think it would benefit alot of ppl who dont like terrian, or who arnt good with it.
I think it's a very good idea. For those who don't think so, you wouldn't have to deal with any of this later on. I think it would be primarily for new map makers, because terrain is simple. Any newb can do a subpar job on it, but triggers are completely different. You do a subpar job on triggers, then half the map doesn't work. I like it, so the newbs don't have to focus on terrain, but the real part of the map... the triggers. This idea would be for learning puposes only, however, this could help some lazy map makers (like me!) that usually quit on the terrain of a map because of their short attention span.
I think it would be a very good idea. However, no protection could be used obviously. The terrian maker would have to be very good. Depending on how creative a map maker is he could make two COMPLETELY different maps using the same terrian. It just takes a little creativeness. There could also be a problem of giving credit where its due.
I didn't think so many people would actually approve of something like this.
So, maybe we can start our own thread of people just posting random terrain maps for people to come and make something out of them. Yet it be a defense, rpg, etc, and people can just come and take 'em for the using.
I'd love for someone to make a a really weird terrain map that wouldn't fit in any genre, and have someone make a map out of it.

Yeah! If some1 just PM:s me or attaches some terrain i can make a map from it
I'd say yay, because I can't make maps because of my lack of motivation when making TERRAIN and my lack of non-laziness. So, if you could help me, pm me and I'll make up my own RPG or RP on your terrain, no matter HOW GOOD or BAD it is, because it's not going to released in public; eh.
I'll promise to give credit ;P
PM me if you want to make terrain for me, I'll even give you 70 minerals.
thats cool but how do u know what they want?
I [COLOR=red]personally[COLOR=green] think that if you're not [COLOR=red]motivated [COLOR=green]to do any part of the map, maybe you're not best fit to do it, So I agree w/ [COLOR=gray]Electroid [COLOR=green]in the idea that [COLOR=red]help [COLOR=green]can [COLOR=red]benefit [COLOR=green]the map, although you'd have to share the credit...

This is my main problem...
I think that most people who
would take premade terrain have a similar problem.
maybe if it was the other way around.... someone did the triggers and outlined the map, then the other person could fill it in with doodads and a more realistic feal
Yea, this would be kinda cool. People could make like custom terrain on maps and people could use them to make rpg maps, arena maps.
Itd be kinda like Renders on signatures, and templates for websites/forums.
What would be cool is if you could make a generator kinda like SC Picture mapper but instead it would be programmed to make random terain that would look neat for arena maps, rpg, etc.
Seems like a good idea. Maybe make a post where people who want terrain can go.
